i-mate: not moving back to HTC. Palm?

So awhile back, we reported on a DigiTimes story about how companies like Palm, i-mate and MWG have all moved back their ODM orders to HTC, switching from other companies, presumably Inventec amongst them (who did a nice job making the Centro).

Well, not so fast there. While DigiTimes often gets scoops they are often not so accurate. And in this case, we're getting word from "Menneisyys" that i-mate has not switched back to HTC and they are continuing to make their own devices (speaking of, click that link to see i-mate's new toys that we probably won't get here in the States, gah).

So this begs the question: What about the rest of those companies, especially Palm? At this point, it's too early to say but we're a bit skeptical at this point to state unequivocally that upcoming devices like the "800w" and "Drucker" are slam dunk orders for HTC.

The choice for Palm of course would have ramifications for HTC as potentially the end-user (assuming you have opinions on the matter). Speaking of...

Should Palm use HTC or go with someone else? Your thoughts, preferences?

Sprint Loses $29.5 Billion with a B

We know. We know. We rag on Sprint too much. But seriously:

Sprint Nextel Corp. swung to a huge fourth-quarter loss of $29.5 billion on Thursday as it wrote down most of the remaining value of its 2005 purchase of Nextel Communications Inc. and continued to lose customers to competitors. -

Now, most of that huge number is due to the fact that Sprint has basically given up on integrating the Nextel side of things fully. If you exclude those bits, it's not too bad. We already reported that they lost 683,000 subscribers last quarter (though that's offset by big gains in pre-paid, less lucrative Boost mobile accounts). We're not starting the Sprint deathwatch yet, but our finger's on the stopwatch button.

We're not saying the 2 hour Sprint Store closings today for a “special webcast” are really about Alltel buying them out, mind you. We wouldn't suggest that Sprint is ripe for a takeover by an upstart network that's been gaining remarkable traction in certain areas of the country. That would be crazy. Practically Tom Cruise crazy.

Those sessions are probably just about the now-unveiled $99-for-everything plan. Right?

LED Alerts: Neat App for BlackJack II

Multicolored lights == discoriffic!

So did you know that the BlackJack II has a LED that's capable of displaying 7 different colors? Me: I did not. But QoreFunctions did, and they've made a neat little app that lets you map all them pretty colors to different alerts on your phone, from email to SMS to missed calls. LedAlerts.

Features:

  • Activate external LED based on specific event
  • Control 7 different LED colors on BlackJack II
  • Ability to assign different LED to each event
  • Manages Simultaneous Active LEDs
  • User Selectable Active LED Duration

Fully utilizing the LED just makes sense - saves you time and battery life because you don't have to power up the screen to see exactly why your phone wants attention. Oh, and it also works with the HTC S730, Verizon SMT5800, and T-Mobile Dash/S620 -- just without all the pretty colors.

Windows Mobile Trojan Spotted in the Wild

This is the offending suite of games.

This is the first “in the wild” Windows Mobile malware I can remember off the top of my head. It was discovered in China and written up over at McAfee. Basically if you downloaded a games pack (including Google Maps in that pack) from a certain Chinese website it installed a piece of software that did the following:

  • Silently makes your smartphone accept unsigned applications
  • Installs a hidden, difficult to remove program that sends your personal information back to home base
  • Installs a copy of the malware on your memory card for further spreading.

The site has since been shut down (despite protests from the developer that he didn't mean to do anything evil). It's a bummer, though, I am not keen on installing anti-virus on my smartphone.

The InfoJack Trojan spreads by either tricking mobile users into installing seemingly legitimate application installation files or if punters inadvertently use an infected memory card on vulnerable devices. The malware has been spotted circulating in China. - Register

Anybody running anti-virus / anti-spyware on their smartphones? How's your performance?

Consumer Level Improvements coming to Windows Mobile

During the Mobile World Congress The Unwired View sat down with Microsoft's corporate vice president of the Mobile Communications Group, Todd Warren. They discussed the XPERIA and also, somewhat excitingly, the multimedia and usability updates we can expect to come to Windows Mobile.

Warren:

we are also working on improving the base of media and picture experiences as part of Windows Mobile. You can expect, I would say, pretty dramatic changes to those in future versions of the product.

Really, though, head over and read the article. Good stuff on Zune integration, improvements to the Touch interface, and collaboration with HTC on making WM integrate better with HTC's TouchFLO

Google2Go: All of Google's Mobile Services in One App

Google2Go

This is slick, TheTechTurf has developed a little app called Google2GO!, which collates a bunch of Google's mobile services into one little app:

  • Google Web/Image Search
  • Google Local Search
  • Gmail
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Reader
  • Google Docs
  • Picasa
  • Google News
  • Google Notes

They couldn't help adding Amazon and Wikipedia too. Important to note, I suppose, that the app isn't Google-affiliated. It's still a fairly early version (v 0.275b), which mainly means that it doesn't support portrait mode or WM Standard devices. Or 240x240 devices.

Still, though, sort of a nice companion to Windows Live, innit?

HTC Promises Software Fix for Video Issues

Video Fix, but not driver, on the way

It turns out that the email we reported on last week by HTC CEO Peter Chou was, in fact, accurate. HTC does indeed have a fix they're currently testing for beleaguered video lovers with HTC devices.

Brighthand is reporting that HTC has released a statement confirming that they have a software fix that “dramatically” improves performance, one they hope to release soon.

The fix isn't a video driver - that would, as we gathered from our insider Q&A, be a massive undertaking involving (we suspect) nearly as much work as just flat-out making a new device. It's not ideal (as HTCClassAction.org fully explains), but maybe it's enough to tide us over. Maybe?

Here's the statement:

Some of our top engineers have investigated video performance on our devices and have discovered a fix that they claim will dramatically improve performance for common on-screen tasks like scrolling and the like. The update is in testing and we hope to release it soon.

However this fix is not a new video driver to utilize hardware acceleration; it is a software optimization. Video drivers are a much more complicated issue that involves companies and engineers beyond HTC alone. We do not want to lead anyone to believe they should expect these.

After the break (because we somehow managed to not post it when Engadget originally reported it back on January 25th), HTC's original, official statement on the issue.

We're back a little later than we'd like, but we'll nail this puppy down eventually. This week I'm talking a bit about the Sprint Touch - specifically how Sprint managed to ruin TouchFLO by adding their own applications that feel like they're little more than attempts to pull more money out of you. Fortunately, there are ways to customize the TouchFLO cube on the Sprint Touch. They come to us courtesy of PPCGeeks. Links after the break!

XPERIA X1 To Use MicroSD After All

XPERIA X1

As surur notes in our forums, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 won't be using the hateful, proprietary, Sony-Only Memory Stick format. It'll use microSD, like a proper smartphone should, assuming that the updated spec sheet is to be believed.

Surur also notes that the X1 might actually be running “Windows Mobile 6.5,” contrary to screenshots showing Windows Mobile 6.1 on the device. Either way, though, the switch to mircoSD means that, basically, the only thing keeping me from owning this device is cruel, cruel time.
