BlackJack II Must-Install: GPS Hack

10 Articleimages 2007 09 Img 0218-1

Our First Look at the BlackJack II is coming just as soon as YouTube finishes processing it. Meanwhile, if you're one of the lucky ones to have picked up this mamma-jamma, MoDaCo has a download for you. See, the BlackJack II has GPS built-in, but by default it only wants to work with TeleNav (an issue we were worried about from the get-go):

[...]there is a problem with the implementation on the Blackjack (and in fact the Moto Q9H I understand, a device I believe this patch will help with too). The problem is that although the GPSID is configured and applications such as the built in Telenav and Windows Live Search can use the system fine, there is no COM port exposed to allow the vast majority of applications that use this connection method to use the GPS. DOH! And with no UI to configure it, you quickly hit a brick wall.

Well Nick Paul O'Brien over at MoDaCo has put together a little app that sets the GPS to COM4. You care about that because it allows other Windows Mobile apps, like Windows Live Search, Virtual Earth Mobile, or Google Maps, to utilize the GPS.

It also “app unlocks” the device so you can re-order the start menu. Be careful with the re-ordering, though, as in my case moving AT&T's apps around seems to have broken MEdia.net and thereby made PocketIE complain a lot.

Big Ups, Paul!

For the record...Paul O'Brien at MoDaCo is the genius behind the patch...not me. I just tested it! :)

We 'did' the Q9H too :D

DOH!

Fixed the article. Thanks for the notes, guys! :)

Ok... this is too cool.
Please extend my thanks to the guys over at Modaco.

How do you re-arrange the Start Menu? I wouldn't mind putting Explorer and a few other items towards the top.

Now if I could only figure out a way to connect to my TomTom XL to utilize their Premium Services....

Do you still have to pay the 9 dollars a month to use GPS if you do this?

just so people don't go through this gps hack stuff like I did if they've recently bought a BJII. You shouldn't need these hacks anymore because the windows intermediary driver is much mored widely supported than when these hacks were necessary. Try running gpstest.exe after you boot up and let it pick up a signal outside. Once that works go ahead and install google maps or live search and they should work just fine with the intermediary driver. One note is that I couldn't get mine to work until I did a hard reset on my phone and tried it. I'm assuming it had something to do with all the crap I had previously installed.

ok guys i set a week aside for live search only. this will only work if i can have my gps used from my black jack II. please give me step by step on installing and settings for this hack. thanks guys. i really want to try live search only and become a bieleiver

I just got a BJII and have been reading the post about getting MoDaCo patch for COM4 to open GPS. I loaded this but when loading it said it was for an older OS. When running the Google Maps, Live, other, the program said there was not GPS connection. What do I need to do step-by-step to get the GPS to connect and work with one of these map tools? Setting? I was considering of buying one of those bluetooth GPS receivers if this does not work. thanks, Bob

I just solve my own problems. I GOT IT TO WORK on Google Maps!

Here are the steps:

1. Download and install the MoDaCo patch for COM4.
2. Download and Google Maps ( or other GPS program)
3. Start Google Maps
4. Leave GPS option default (starting with Windows)
5. Push Menu an select "Use GPS"
6. Wait 5-10 mins and watch BJII acquire satellites.

- accuracy is right on.

GPS Software

I have downloaded and installed the GPS tester. That works fine and I can connect to satellites. I cannot find any GPS software to download to my phone to get it to work. Can somebody please point me in the right direction? I have downloaded copies of the Garmin and TomTom software but they will not work on my phone.

I appreciate the help.

Well... you've got Googlemaps and Liveview.

Will pocket streets and trips work with GPS?

I have a blackjack i616 its the canadian version and I couldnt download the modoco hack because of security issues, for people in canada who have the Samsung Jack i616 follow these steps

1.Download Aplication Unlocker
http://www.myblackjack2.com/hacks-and-mods/sda-application-unlocker/

2. Once you have installed app unlocker restart your phone (turn off then on)

3. Now u can install the modoco com4 hack onto your phone with no problems

4. once dled restart you phone

5. Now use google maps with default settings do not change to com 4 or it will not work

6. It will take varios times to lock onto satitilites usually less then 2 mins

7. hurray ur done

Definitely a must.

Just installed the hack along with Google Maps. This is real nice. :D

Thx

Well.Good Job.

Well.Good Job.Do you like it? I Believe those pretty, cute usful floral toolswill attract you. More info of floral garden tools, floral hand tools.

I have the Samsung i616 and reside in Canada. I downloaded the mocado hack and tried to install it on my phone, but I get a message saying it does not have sufficient system permissions to do so... Can anybody help me please?

Tigran-
The $9.99 monthly charge is only levied if you use the Telenav software. By default, the BlackJack II is designed to only operate with said software. The MoDaCo GPS utility, when dowloaded and installed, permits you to use the built-in GPS function with any software, not just Telenav.

Just installed the hack along with Google Maps. This is real nice. :D

Thx

I've got both loaded on my phone as well but how can I tell if the GPS is actually working with Google Maps??? Is the little blue blip supposed to move as my car moves??? I thought I read on here somewhere that it does move. Yesterday I was using it and Google Maps loaded up written directions but when I switched over to the map view, it (the map)was not updating itself as I was driving.

I'm new to the smartphones and GPS for that matter so I'm completely clueless. My Google Maps with find GPS signals but it doesn't appear to be animated.

What am I missing???

i still need help. usually i can hack relatively fast but this one has me stumped. can you please post a step by step exactly on what to do to get the gps working for the bj2 . with all settings or a video? help a hacker out.

My blue blip moves as I drive down the road...its cool. It should move if you have a GPS connection. Make sure your on "My Location" in the menu and "Use GPS". After that it may take a couple to connect and the blue blip being you should be on target. The only time it doesn't pinpoint you is if you don't get a connection being that your in a building or structure, then the blue blip will be the nearest tower in which then it wouldn't move when you did. To get a good connection, I have to walk outside my house.

Thanks KStewart for the response.

I will try again and make the settings that you suggest.

Have anyone try this hack with iGuidance?

iGuidance and TomTom got turn by turn with voice, I got them for PPC, if the BJ2 work with iGuidance then I'm getting it.

I used the hack on my BlackJack II. I installed Garmin's City Navigator 2008 on it and it works awesome! AWESOME software, considering Telenav and Telenav's tech support, etc. It works like a 600.00 Garmin stand-alone w/ everything-voice turn by turn, great maps support, weather, traffic, etc. It picks up the sats in SECONDS-even faster than google maps or anything else I've tried. In the time it takes to open the software, (10 seconds... MAYBE), the sats are there.

I'm not trying to sell Garmin's software-mine is an 'evaluation copy' if you catch my hard drift-just giving credit where credit is due to Paul for giving us such an awesome and amazing piece of work on this great phone. I love the thing and the MoDaCo hack f'ing rocks. The Garmin software wouldn't have even opened without it. Thank you thank you thank you.. lol.

Paul, you ROCK, brother! Thank you for the hard work, time and attention you gave us for this hack!!

GPS Software

Does anyone know of any GPS software that is standalone for the BJII, like a tom tom or garmin GPS unit. I don't used the data plans with my phone but I would like to be able to use the gps function with offline maps on an sd card or loaded directly into the phone..is this possible? I hope you can help.. this is a great forum and I hope to be as proficient in the use and care of my new BJII as others are here. Also, I see software for tracking other GPS enabled phones, is it possible to load a piece of software on a device (Black Jack or Black Jack II) to track the phone with my phone? Just wondering??? Thanks again
Greg

It isnt working for me at all and I cant even get on the Internet anymore! :-( Any suggestions on what I should do?

NEED HELP!!! BAD!!

I have gotten the GPS portion to work using the GPS Hack and the GPS TEST software found here but I cannot get the Garmin Software to use the GPS on my phone, it state that it is only able to be used with a GPS bluetooth system. Any ideas? any one??
