BlackJack II: Use Any MP3 as a Ringtone

Apples In Stereo, Rainfall is my default ringtone

Alright, we have Registry Edits on the brain ever since our How To article went up. Here's a combo How To with a side of optional registry edit:

In our forums, coppertop asks about how to set up an MP3 as a ringtone on a BlackJack II. Here's a hint: the way you do it is annoying and not intuitive at all. Save your mp3 wherever you like. Now here's the wonky part. The BlackJack II has two file browsers - the default one from Windows Mobile and another one called “My Stuff.” Use “My Stuff” and navigate to your mp3. When it's highlighted, one of your menu options is to set it as a ringtone. It will prompt you to move the file to your /My Documents/My Sounds folder -- but it really means “copy,” FYI. Done!

Now for the registry edit. By default, the BlackJack II doesn't allow for MP3 ringtones over 300kb. That's awfully small - so the fix is, you guessed it, changing that setting in the registry. Per CycleNC:

Go into HKEY_Current User → ControlPanel → Sounds
Delete the key of FileSizeLimit

Done. Now, you've applied the GPS Hack too, right? Your BlackJack II is on its way to custom heaven.

Ringtone question...

Can the BJII play MP3's for ringtones?

tsk.........

um......

shoot. I have no idea. My hunch is that it cannot, you'll need a management program to convert them. But I don't know for sure. I don't have access to our BJII for awhile, so I can't check. sorry.

sure, plays them no problem

By default, there is a 300kb limit on ringtones. If you want to get rid of this, do the following in a registry editor:

Go into HKEY_Current User → ControlPanel → Sounds
Delete the key of FileSizeLimit

Forgive the ignorance but how do I get the .mp3's where they need to be so they can be used as a ringtone?

Uh, my Q9c has a "My Ringtones" folder in My Documents. I actually transfered some of the ringers on the old Q over to the new one (the new one has very limited and lame ringers), dropped them there and they showed up when choosing ringtones. YMMV.

umm, so I deleted the key now I get an error that the file cannot be bigger then 0k

Hm. did you delete the key or the value?

I deleted the entire key.

I also deleted the key. How do I get it back, or another to replace?

This hack is awesome. I set up MP3s for my ringtone, my emails, and my voicemails. I love that they play through the whole song too and not just 30 seconds (might get annoying later, but probably not, its Metallica). However, when I check a voicemail as the song is still playing, you can hear the song still play while your listening to your voicemails (now that can get annoying). Plus when you log out of your mailbox, if the song isn't finished, it keeps playing. I guess Ill have to figure out how to get to the mp3 player options to quickly end the song....haha

I deleted the key and now it says that the file size cannot be larger than 0 KB. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to correct this or get my filesizelimit key back?

Where would I find Hkey?

Has anybody answered the above queries about getting the key back? I made the same error. The article says to delete the key and it looks like I am one of many lemmings who jumped off that cliff. Any answers?

Which key was actually deleted? If you are using a registry editor on your phone such as PHM Registry Editor for Smartphone, you can create Keys using the menu option. If you deleted a high level key, you'll likely need to import a registry dump from someone else.

The key was called file size limit. Your posted stated, "Go into HKEY_Current User → ControlPanel → Sounds
Delete the key of FileSizeLimit" I obviously read it wrong. When I got to the key, I deleted it. I need to recover that key. I used Resco Registry...

...I used the same program and made a new key which has a default of (value not set)

What value would I put in? The original post never explained the correct syntax for this. Will this work? I am not a maven at this.

No worries. I just wanted to make sure I knew exactly what you needed. The FileSizeLimit value should have contained the following before you removed it:

Value Name: FileSizeLimit
Value data: 307200
Base: Decimal
Value type: REG_DWORD

Hope that helps. If it doesn't, drop another reply and I'll see what I can do to get you all patched up.

I have a key called FileSizeLimit

Inside I have a value as follows:
Value Name: FileSizeLimit
Value data: 307200
Base: Decimal
Value type: REG_DWORD

I still get the file size being 0 when I try to make an MP3 a ringtone.

I do not have a key called FileSizeLimit. I only have a value called FileSizeLimit under HKEY_Current User → ControlPanel → Sounds. Try removing the FileSizeLimit key and creating the FileSizeLimit value directly under the Sounds key to see if that can get you back to square 1. At that point, try removing the FileSizeLimit value to see if that resolves your issue.

Thanks!! I just set an arbitrarily high limit that I think is 20m

I can't find the control panel on my blackjack II can you guys help me?

black jack

Can the BJII play MP3's for ringtones?

help

Hey guys/gals... If you're still having issues with using MP3's for ringtones, follow this:

You can change the “file size limit” in the registry of the phone using CeRegEditor(search for link via Google). Download it, its free and connect to the phone via active sync. Once the editor is up, click on orange phone icon then, go to the “user” file like HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control panel, sounds then on the upper right, double click file size limit and change it to whatever you want. You have to do it in KB though. I changed mine to 10MB ummm. 10485760. And then you can use all your songs as ringtones, no more crap about “300kb size limit.” Hope this helps out.
