Make your WinMo Phone More Googley or More Microsofty

Its seems as though google is neck and neck with windows mobile apps available for download. Microsoft currently has Live search, Live Messenger, Live Search Bar built into most mobile phones and Mobile Outlook ready for the Windows Mobile community as we speak . Google has been firing back with apps such as Google Maps, Gmail through Java, GMobileSync and the new addition of Google Search Bar.

So you may wonder which suite is best for you? Well it really depends on what kind of user you are. If you find you self addicted to Outlook and MSN messenger than the first apps are going to feel familiar, whereas if you like the threaded chat style email or the Google search results, then the latter is the best choice.

In order to get started on some of these amazing apps you will want to have an unlimited data plan because of the internet usage. Then point your mobile browser to http://m.google.com and download Google Maps and the new Today Screen Plugin, or hit up http://m.live.com and download Microsoft's Live Search. Or heck - do what I do and download them all -- it never hurts to have an extra tool on your smartphone.

Me, I tend use Google apps more due to the ease and familiarity. Using Gmail through Java is a cinch since I don’t have the luxury of Microsoft Exchange. With Gmail mobile you get all the great features like add star, search, archive, and many more. Google search tends to have a “Hit the nail on the head”, effect when searching the web.

Are you saying there is a GMAIL app for WM6? I followed the link you provided and I get an error saying the file cannot be viewed on my device. I have a Q9c. Thanks!
My thoughts on some of the services mentioned:

1) I have finally switched to GMail as my primary account. I have Outlook fetch the headers for the last day of mail, and if I see something I like, I use OperaMini to hit the full gmail page. It's very fast and you get the full HTML email experience. GMail's email search function is also right on the page, so your entire email inventory is available at all times.

2) I use Google Search, but again, though Opera Mini. Now I only call up PIE when I need to watch YouTube videos so I don't need a Google Search bar on my Today screen.

3) For Maps, I think Live Search offers a little more at the moment.

4) I'm not a big fan of Live Messenger at all, specially when there are free apps like Palringo available that not only offer all IM services but also do NOT hijack your contacts.

That was the first version of Live Messenger released with the T-Mobile Wing. Subsequent versions have the option to not download/sync your Windows Live contacts, however I know some people who love that feature.

Palringo sounds nice with it's voice clips and image transfer support. Doesn't sound like file transfers are there though. I kinda like having the contact photos download on Live Messenger. I just wish some one would make one that had decent video calling support.

Also, I prefer Google on the desktop, but I prefer to use Live Search as a search engine on Windows Mobile because it automatically reformats the search result links to fast-downloading optimized versions which are much easier to use than their desktop counterparts on the small screen. (It's like Skweezer)

However, the Mobile Google News site is really great because it links to news sites that have mobile versions of their articles, so that's really great too.

Google Search Bar failed to install properly on my Sprint Q9c.
