Touch Diamond

Go take a peek at PhoneMag's Live Coverage (now archived) if you want the full experience, or you can also check out HTC's Touch Diamond page. There's not a lot of new information here, hardware-wise, because we already knew we'd be getting:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • 256 ROM, 192 RAM, 4GB Internal Storage
  • 2.8“ VGA Touchscreen
  • Tri-Band (What?! Boo!) HSDPA
  • A-GPS
  • 3.2 MP Camera
  • Bluetooth, WiFi, FM Radio
  • 900, Yes 900 mAh Battery
  • Accelerometer

The new new is that TouchFLO, as rumored, has indeed received quite an upgrade. They're not calling it Manilla (and truth be told it looks a lot better than Manilla did), they're calling it TouchFLO 3D. It featured Email, Weather, browser, music, and photos in an integrated interface that allows you some access to the data you're interested in without ”dumping“ you back into standard Windows Mobile quite as often as regular TouchFLO does.

The Touch Diamond will hit Europe and Asia in June, everybody else (read: us) ”later this year.“ Until then, we'll be heading over to the cosmetics aisle. We're so green with envy of our European friends, we're going to need some serious foundation to cover all this up.

Update: Some YouTube vids after the break!

I'm sold!!!!!!
Very nice. Although like the rest of the WM-educated world, I am concerned about the 900mah battery. Regardless, I'll ride out my Cruise for about 9-12 months then I'll consider a Diamond or a iPhone 2.
More deets

Looking at the various posts on the tubes, as expected, lots of negative comments about the small 2.8" screen, lack of an audio jack, and tiny battery...
Oh by the way, in case you're wondering, MobilePlanet has listed the Diamond for pre-order: $764.95.

Yup, good find.

HTC Touch Diamond $764.95
Sorry about the multiple posts in advance. I couple of things stuck in my mind: first the price. How does a $764.95 hold up in light of AT&T's recently announced iPhone price cuts? Not very well I think, even though the Diamond will be discounted by the carriers.

The Tri-band issue is interesting. As is already well known, the original GSM Touch is quad-band, even though HTC marketed it as tri-band. This was a consequence of the TI OMAP chip set and how the 850/900 MHz bands are multiplexed, making it difficult to disable one without disabling the other.

The quad-band capability of the original GSM was an important factor in my decision to purchase an enhanced Touch. I've been very happy with it's reception, especially on the 850MHz band.

It's much easier to disable the 850MHz band in Qualcomm 72xx chipsets; HTC did this to the HTC Touch Dual. Even though I think the Diamond has many negatives that it shouldn't have, it has possibilities when viewed narrowly as an upgrade to the original and enhanced Touch; the inclusion of GPS makes the price jump slightly more palatable. However, without the 850 band, most "unlocked" adopters here in the states will probably have to take a pass.
Are you sure it's 192MB Ram and not 128MB? What's the source of the 192MB value?
Price on MobilePlanet is now up to 854.95!
One of the best phones ever, can't wait for this phone to be released. Please check out http://www.AllTouchDiamond.com for more info.
