HTC: Hey Guys, Turns Out We Made That Smartphone You're Using

Ok, so the headline is a pitch-perfect example of why we're not writing ad copy. The gist, though, is that HTC is preparing to really start this effort to increase their brand awareness that they've been chatting it up for some time now (their December financial report was just the most recent instance of such chatting). We're also just starting to see HTC get carriers to admit that its HTC that makes stuff like the Shadow, the Tilt, the MDA, the Mogul, and so on -- we're all for these being clearly known as HTC devices. In fact, we think it's better for the carriers to associate themselves with the HTC brand than it is to pretend that the “Verizon XV6800” came out of Verizon's labs. You guys have that network thing down, stick with that.

Anyhow, back to HTC. The next step is to up and get some commercials on the air. And of course, on YouTube, as you can see in the (slightly creepy?) video above. Expect to see more from HTC in the coming weeks and months. More, that is, in addition to the mystery event on May 6th, the just-leaked images, and the fact that there's a better than 50% chance that the phone on your belt is already an HTC product. Oh, and then there's this from HTC's YouTube page:

Something Beautiful, eh? What could THAT be?

Sure, they're playing us like a tune with this stuff, but sometimes it's nice to get played -- especially if the end result is a great device, right?

Okay, links are foobar'd...

Hey it's Thing from the Adam's family!!

Let's try this again:

Both of your links work:confused:

Anyway, is this the iPhone killer?:p :D

As long as it ships with Opera Mobile it will be fine. I used it on my old HTC Advantage (VGA screen) yesterday and it looks amazing, with full web pages like the nytimes being fully readable even zoomed out.

One usually think of HTC as a small company, but their market cap is at present around $14 billion, meaning they are worth more than Acer or Asus or even Apple's favourite ODM Foxconn. They are worth about a 1/3 as much as Sony on $42 billion dollars, and 1/10th of Apple.

The links work if you highlight the text and paste it, but not if you click on the link. I've seen this phenomenon happen in other commenter's links as well...

Ok, so maybe your mobile phone was made by HTC; mine was, of course, the HTC logo on the front is a dead giveaway... But what does that really mean? In the carrier centric black hole which is the United States, the only other product that we can look for guidance, for better or worse, is Apple's iPhone. Is there any doubt in the shotgun union of Apple and ATT who wears the pants? So when customers think iPhone, they think Apple iPhone, not ATT iPhone.

In practical terms, this means that most customers buy their iPhones from Apple, look for support from Apple, even with network related issues, and expect future enhancements to come from Apple. In the US, if HTC really wants to become a recognized brand, the Apple model is the one to emulate. Is HTC prepared to do what necessary beyond some snappy commercials? That's the big question and I think we know the answer.

Surely its not a question of whether HTC is prepared to, but whether they have the leverage, and the answer is clearly no.

About th best they can do is sell unlocked phones, which they are doing.

"Verizon Labs" - Don't make me laugh!!

Ah, but leverage is created by business, marketing, planning, design, and manufacturing expertise and execution, something that requires intelligence, resources, tenacity, and patience. I think the question stands.

Further, does HTC really sell HTC branded phones in the US market? I think your confusing direct sales with imports available from domestic resellers.

Even Apple is losing leverage, for example they could not force through an unlimited data plan in Ireland, and the phone does not come with visual voice mail anymore. In the current system, the carriers call the shots.

No, they are selling the HTC Touch Dual via Best Buy stores.
