HTC S710 (HTC Vox) Unboxing, Q&A

Here it is - my favorite WM6 device of this year (so far): the HTC Vox/S710. Check out the unboxing video below. After the jump, answers to the questions submitted over the weekend.

In case you're wondering, here's the rundown on the specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Standard
  • TI OMAP 201 MHz Processor
  • 128 MB ROM (about 50 MB User accessible), 64MB RAM (again, about 50 MB of Program Memory)
  • 101.5 mm x 50 mm x 17.5 mm / 120g
  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE Quad-band
  • WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Around 7 hours talk-time

On to the Q&A. If you have more questions, post 'em below!

I totally agree with you that its the most exciting WM6 device coming out. My one question is does it have wifi? I'm feeling it doesn't, which would suck a bit.
- Neil

It does indeed have WiFi, which is a relief as the s710 only has EDGE for wireless data otherwise.

2. Carriers?
3. Release Date?
4. Comparison shots with other US devices, Q, blackjack, or similar.
- Josh Smith | April 27, 2007 1:53 PM

Sadly, no idea on carriers or release dates. I strongly suspect that T-Mobile will get it, though, as it looks like an excellent SDA replacement. I'll put up a bevy of comparison shots in the next day or two.

No 3G = No sale. This is not a revolutionary interface like the iPhone so the lack of 3G hurts this device.
- Jerry G

The lack of 3G is a pity (and a big one), but at least there's WiFi to lessen the blow.

how big is it?
what are the dimensions?
- skp

101.5 mm x 50 mm x 17.5 mm. Basically, it feels like your standard feature phone these days. As you can see in the video, it's smaller than the T-Mobile SDA, so it's pretty hand-friendly.

Does the vox have touchscreen? Can u edit windows office documents? How much did u pay for the device?
- Jack Borg

No touchscreen, as it's Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition (aka non-touchscreen edition). Since it's WM6, you can indeed edit office documents, though creating new ones requires a little hack. Let's not talk too much about how much we paid - it's an import right now so it won't feel good to mention it. ;)

This phone looks great, thanks for the video!

But what's the deal with the even cooler S730/Wings that's supposed to come out in July (per http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=728)?? Will they really make the Vox outdated so quickly? Seems to make no sense...

Hi Yuri -

The deal is that they're actually two different types of phones. The Wing is a WM Pro with a touchscreen that's a touch larger than this one, while this s710 is the standard, non-touchscreen version. different strokes for different folks.

There seem to be two upcoming devices associated with the name 'Wing(s)'. Please see:

1: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=728
2: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=756

I'm referring to #1, which is clearly a 'Standard' device (and is very similar to the Vox), while you are maybe referring to #2, which is indeed Pro.

Ah, I see. Looks like that S730 is the same as the S710, but adds more GSM bands, 3G speeds, and a 2nd camera. I suspect that the S730 won't make its way the US, actually. Looks like it's designed for the European market.

Yes, and don't forget:
- A GPS
- Twice faster CPU
- 20 grams *less* than the Vox (with same size screen)

It really has everything, and it all seems a little too good to be true for something that's supposed to be out in July. But man, I want one! :)

The lack of 3G is really inexcusable at this point in time for a device like this. WiFi does not lessen the "blow" since WiFi is not ubiquitous.

From what I can see, the space bar (or lack thereof) is really a sticking point with regards to the Vox's keyboard.

I think that wifi does lessen the blow because it's a form of hi-speed wireless, just a lot more limited than 3G. Of course, there are those that will take wifi over 3G and vice versa. I'm the latter.

Interesting device, but I think I'll be sticking with my BlackJack/Treo 750 combo for now.

fantastic device, nice video. just ordered one.

the main feature from 3G is to reduce the battery life by 30%.

email and IM is fine over GPRS/EDGE and browsing is always painful long term for small devices (yeah. admit it. use it for 1 week then never again - only a laptop will do).

the difference between edge and 3G is minimal (although hdspa/3.5g is worth having).
I think the cost is reasonable. The S630 is coming out with 3G but it will be around £100/$200 more and its not worth it.

IMHO

The official HTC specs on the Vox say that it can view office documents and PDF files, yet I have seen a couple of reviews saying that you can, in fact, edit Word and Excel. Can anyone shed any light on this?
