HTC Shift to Arrive on Sprint!

Well Well, it looks like folks that have been waiting for the HTC Shift to really and truly arrive in the States are in for a pleasant surprise - Sprint is going to carry it! That obviously means it's going to be an EVDO device (instead of the GSM variant in Europe). The Shift is an awfully sweet Windows Vista UMPC combined with a Windows Mobile device. You should know, however, that some folks are relatively unhappy that the Windows Mobile side of the device isn't really a full version of Windows Mobile, it's called “SnapVue” and it's hampered by all sorts of limitations due to HTC cutting out major swaths of Windows Mobile. (MoDaCo has some tips on how to fix that little problem).

It sucks its going to Sprint! Sprint doesn't have 3G or HSDPA for high speed browsing.

Are you kidding, Hollywould? Then why am I paying only $15/month for unlimited 3G from Sprint right now? Why does my phone get download speeds of 1.5-2 mbps downloads and 500 or so up? How is EV-DO not high speed 3G? If I'm not mistaken, in my area it is by far the cheapest and fastest 3G available at all. Not saying I would buy this device. I already have a tablet that I got off eBay for $350. I just don't see how anyone familiar with US carriers would think Sprint didn't have 3G.

Yeah, well I have AT&T and get 3.5-4 mbps on my full HSDPA. Thats a lot faster than your EV-DO service, and I get more service in more places around the world. Not to mention the Shift is origionally a GSM phone in Europe, so they have to change it to make it compatible with CDMA services.

Not. I am with AT&T now and after being with Sprint, EVDO is where its at. And Sprint is taking it to another level with 4G (WiMax) a.k.a. ZOHM. AT&T's 3G market is reletively smaller than Sprint and Verizons EVDO market. My
700p with crappy Blazer on Sprint's EVDO network is considerably faster than HSDPA on my BJ II. I am planning on putting my notebook on the airwaves and it won't be with AT&T...EVDO is where I am headed being in more markets in the U.S. And of course you get service in more places around the world...its called GSM, daaa. CDMA is not used in Europe.

No, GSM is older and was before CDMA. CDMA is a newer of the two. Your HSDPA is based on simular technology as CDMA 3G to get GSM up to 3G standards. CDMA's EVDO has been a step ahead of GSM in data and was rolled out before AT&T started expanding on their 3G network. I am with AT&T now and I love their voice coverage where I live but it doesn't mean I am on GSM's gonads.

What do you mean about you guys...I am with AT&T(read the sig). I have one phone line with Sprint still I gave to my daughter that I pay almost nothing for with my corporate discount. I really liked Sprint EVDO and crystal clear calling along with my stellar savings, but their voice network is lacking where I live and where my extended family resides.

Those are great speeds Hollywould. We don't get those kinds of speeds on GSM in my city. The best we get is Rev. A on Sprint. I have thought about AT&T in the past because sometimes they have a phone I want (in this case, the Tilt) but I can never bring myself to sign a contract where I pas $45/month for unlimited data as opposed to $15. Also their illegally spying on domestic data and phone traffic for the NSA left a bad taste in my mouth so I've been hesitant to give them any money. Just a personal thing. Either way I guess I'm lucky because Sprint has excellent service in my area so it's a moot point. Now you just made me jealous of your data speeds ;)
