Internet Explorer "6 on 6" Won't Be a Separate Download; Emulator Released

Posted on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 by Malatesta

One topic we've been discussing here at WMExperts (especially our podcasts) is whether or not the new Mobile Internet Explorer, aptly dubbed "6 on 6", will be available as a separate download or update for current generation devices. After all, it doesn't seem too difficult, but whaddya we know?

Turns out the answer is "no"

From the Windows Mobile Team Blog, "Khush" who says he from the Windows Mobile team, states:

Regarding making IE Mobile available as a separate download or update, the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices. That is why it will not be available as an upgrade or direct download for current phones, but rather will be made available on new phones.

Not written in stone of course, but doesn't look good for most current devices. Looks good though for the expected Sprint Treo Pro, which we expect early next year.

Other tidbits:

IE Mobile 6 is expected to show up in devices at the end of 2008 or early 2009.
...although this release is called Internet Explorer Mobile 6, there are components from other versions of Internet Explorer for the desktop. One example of that is the support for Jscript v5.7 which we brought over from Internet Explorer 8 for the desktop.

Of course the big news though is MS announced the emulator and demoed the new, richer MIE. So for developers or those curious, get the emulator here.

Thanks Yirk!

I have had this happen twice on my Sprint Treo 800w. No one at Sprint could identify the problem and in the end my only solution was to completly delete the email box and re-create it from scratch. For me once it happened I was never able to send any email again from that account, always got a message "unable to connect with SMTP server, check your connections". The last time I had this issue was 9/15 (I started logging it because it was so strange), hopefully this patch resolves the issue.
Things like this is why Windows Mobile is dying, if not dead already. How can a company like Apple, RIM produce a better OS than Windows Moble that has been around longer than either one of them? I'll tell you how, it is the arrogance of Microsoft. Microsoft beleives that all they have to do is release a product with their name on it and it will be superior to all else. Microsoft's arrogance is also why Vista failed. Vista did not fail because it was a bad OS, Vista failed because people bought into the hype of all those Mac vs PC commercials.

When you pick a platform that include more than one phone model, you're going to have issues with legacy support. That's the trade-off for consumer choice.

At lets face it, the new PIE doesn't matter much, when Skyfire already offers full Web with Flash and Java support and Firefox is rolling out next year.

That is the whole point. Only on Windows Mobile are users forced to look for third party alternatives for web browsing. You don't need this on the IPhone, you don't need this on Blackberrys, or Google's new phone. It is issues like this that is killing Windows Mobile. Microsoft says they can't release a stand alone update of IE6 Mobile for existing phones because they're not powerful enough. To me, that says that Microsoft's coders don't have the ability to write efficient code. If Skyfire and Opera can do it, then why can't Microsoft? The average user, will not put up with this. They don't want to have to search for third party apps to get their phone the way it should.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Windows Mobile,. I'm also a highly skilled technical person and I'm frustrated to see the lack of motivation and innovation that Microsoft has in regards to Windows Mobile. You have to remember, the bulk of phone sales does not come from skilled technical people. The average cell phone buyer will not put up with phones that are difficult for them to use. Why do you think that Symbian, Iphone, & RIM are all outselling Windows Mobile?

Cell phone sales:

Symbian OS: 46,6% Market Share Sales Q3 2008
IPhone OS: 17.3% Market Share Sales Q3 2008
RIM Blackberry: 15.2% Market Share Sales Q3 2008
Windows Mobile: 13.6% Market Share Sales Q3 2008

You can't argue the numbers, and it doesn't look promising for Windows Mobile. Heck one phone (IPhone) from a single carrier is outselling all Windows Mobile devices from all carriers. Now how is that postive news for Windows Mobile?
[COLOR="Navy">Concerning RIM's browser, people still gripe about BB's native browser.

And WM has always been mainly a business OS, not a play OS like the iPhone's. The reason the iPhone sold more is because it's a great multi-media phone with a few smartphone features. Many mainstream buyers were not looking for a strict business OS anyway. What MSFT should do is offer more multimedia support and refreshed interface to gain mainstream sales, if you ask me. It may be partly lack of innovation, but I think the real reason is because WM's main customers are still business people who need business apps first over fun apps, so MSFT doesn't see an urgent need to change. But if they want mainstream sales, they will indeed need to change. That I agree about. WM is great for business, not fun for multimedia, therefore mainstream buyers are not interested.

This can also apply to Symbian, it does both smartphone features and multimedia VERY well. So those phones are more popular worldwide(not in the US though).[/COLOR]
