iPhone 2.0 is a Serious Threat in the Enterprise Space

We just finished the iPhone 3G Live Blog over at our sister site, theiPhoneBlog.com. The big news for Windows Mobile users is twofold:

  1. There was plenty of Windows Mobile mockery to be had. Most especially, they made fun of the Task Manager. The iPhone's solution is to offer a push notification feature to all developers in place of background tasks. While we here at WMExperts think that true multitasking is probably still a better way to go, we are a little jealous of the ability to have any developer be able to push out notifications for IM, Tweets, or whatever.
  2. The iPhone 2.0 software is coming soon and it's going to drive a much bigger wedge in the Enterprise Smartphone space than we'd previously thought. We already knew that the new software will offer Exchange push email support. It's not as good as what's available natively on Windows Mobile, but it might be 'good enough.' The bigger news, though, is that 35% of the Fortune 500 companies took part in the SDK Beta program. That's a lot of big companies giving serious consideration to full iPhone support.

We'll add one more - Apple beat Microsoft to the punch as far as offering “Exchange services for the rest of us.” Their new MobileMe, while poorly named, is full push email, contacts, and calendar for Joe User. Sure, it's $100 bucks a year (ouch!), but it's getting to market before Microsoft was able to integrate and utilize the services they acquired by buying Danger.

What do you think? Do the new iPhone software services and features pose a more serious threat to Windows Mobile than they did before?

1) Its not "to have any developer be able to push out notifications", only the ones apple approves off.
2) Windows Live pushes contacts and mail already for free, and full exchange hosting costs only a little more (and can even be free)

Of course.
It is ironic that MS, butt of many jokes at WWDC, is also providing some of the important technology feature-wise in the iPhone 3G: The entirety of MobileMe, email, calendar, contact sync and wireless wipe are all built-on/rely on Microsoft Exchange, the same technology long used on WinMo devices
duh...
Without background processes, you still aren't going to see any voice dialing via bluetooth, voice recognition, text-to-speech, or 3rd party software keyboards like TouchPal, FITALY, T9, etc. I don't think a software "push" API is going to help with any of those things.
I am not that impressed with MobileMe. IMHO, only Apple's brilliant marketing will make that a success. Otherwise, Android will give you the same capabilities for free in 6 months. And Mesh will give WinMo the same capability very soon as well.

I agree with you about the beta with fortune 500 companies and the ability for IT execs to create their own apps for the iphone and lock down the iphone for their corporate users. That is pretty powerful for me as an IT admin.

WinMo's problem right now is the iphone pricepoint. That coupled with Apple marketing makes it very tempting for the user that doesn't care about closed simple systems.
There are plenty of cheaper win mo devices e.g the Samsung Blackjack.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant WinMo Pro devices as the standard devices don't really compare with the touch screen iphone, imho.

Non-touch screen phones far far far outsell Touch screen phones.

Surur
ok so here are my thoughts. its definitly going to be competition but like others said if its just for work then a cheap blackjack might just do the trick. not for me though. im definitly hitting up our IT to see when we can get these set up .
Dieter is right, the big thing is the fact that more than a third of Fortune 500 companies are developing for the iPhone. It is not so much what is not there at the moment but what is going to come in the next few months that will transform an already capable device into something really useful.
@Surur - I am sure non-touch screen phones outsell touch screen phones, but that doesn't mean the WinMo Standard phones are a competitor to the iPhone.

I wonder if iphone will have access to Live Mesh as that is a very powerful technology.

Is the N95 not a competitor to the iPhone then? Or the Blackberry Bold either?

It may surprise you,but some people actually prefer one-handed, non-touchscreen use.

Surur
I prefer one handed touchscreen use. However before that I preferred one handed non-touchscreen use with my Cavalier.

Since when can you put WinMo standard on the N95 or the Bold?
