This one is engineer prototype, I donnt know the final release name is 850 or Pro...:o , who cares , I wanna this one! According after centro engineer type appeared, the final version released soon. Hope the retail version will come out soon.....:D

Notable: the green dots on the Treo Pro above are on different buttons than on previous leaked images. I'm betting they can use those as a 'key' to figure out who had this one. :eek:

Thanks Palm. I understand two different development teams, etc, etc, so the two devices have different appearances.

BUT a Palm team knew how to fit in a BIGGER battery, real headset slot, and flush screen into a SMALLER package than the 800w and no one told the CDMA team.

Whoever is in charge of internal coordination over there should be fired.

Looks very slick. No doubt.

I will say, though, that most devices look better in black - if only because it helps it look like one solid unit. Seams blend in with the rest.

I will say, though, that the smaller keyboard and buttons make it look like Palm could've made the screen larger. Or maybe a larger keyboard instead. Both?

And, I'm disappointed to see that just trying to turn on the screen can still result in accidentally hanging up on or ignoring an incoming phone call. Am I the only one this happens to?

The microSD card and reset holes are underneath the battery cover, but you don't need to remove the battery to access them.

Haven't been this excited since I first learned about the Treo 600. I'm first in line when this baby hit the shelf! I do hope there are some color options though. Doesn't have to anything flashy, but I'd prefer blue or silver to just plain black.

Man, now that's the phone I'm waiting for. A flush screen is sweet for wiping it off, which we'll be doing because my only gripe is all that glossy "new age" phone surfacing. There are fingerprints on every surface in the photos.. yeah, I'm kinda picky about that.

where'd the softkeys go?

Hey, anyone else notice that the softkeys right below the screen that were shown in the leaked photo from May aren't in these new leaked pics? The pics from the flash site still say there are softkeys there, but you can't see the buttons for them. Are they now just touch-sensitive areas or what?

The softkeys are still there. If you look closely, you'll notice that all of the keys around that area are capacitive.

The 850 sure makes the 800w look like a box of turd.

If you look really closely, you'll notice the entire device is made of nsxprime's dreams. You'll also notice that you can't tell the difference between capacitive keys and flexible push buttons in a photograph. Then you'll realize that nsxprime really has no freaking clue what he's talking about. Then you'll breathe a sigh of relief and move on with your life.

My point was that nsxprime has been trolling the 800w boards for weeks doing everything he can to bash it, and now he sees this shiny new Palm that is just everything he's always wanted, including a pony. I didn't attack him out of nowhere, he brought this on himself. If he hadn't been such an a$$hat about 800w and so persistent about it, I'd let his drooling over the 850 slide. But now he's ticked me off, a dangerous thing to do to a writer in a written medium.

We know what we know about the 850, and it ain't much. Let's keep further speculation to ourselves, lest it fester into fact.

I'll speculate that they're probably flexible buttons. in the May photos, you can see buttons that look similar to those on the 800w. Personally I prefer the tactile response of an actual button, but either way it does clean up the look quite a bit.

However, if they ARE flexible buttons, I wonder what that bodes with regards to the screen (since it seems to be one continuous piece of material covering the screen and those buttons). If it's a really soft plastic, will it be scratch prone? will it feel funny to use a stylus on?

I wonder if the OP can comment on durability of the screen and the tactile experience?

Yeah, I'm not sure how it's even a touchscreen device considering how it's made. Then again, iPhone screens are made similarly - unfortunately they don't respond to styluses (styli?).

No doubt. It's really pretty pathetic.

Anyone else notice how bright the screen on the 850 seems from the photos? Compared to the 800w it looks like it has twice the brightness.

my xv6800 has been out over a year and has a bigger screen.. same processor and so forth.. it's palm that will make htc literally take over the wm market. SONY is malking a better device.

the shame of it is that Palm started all this and look at where they are now.. pathetic.

i still think the other companies are lacking common sense also.. you would think by now they would reach 1ghz processors considering how robust the wm operating system is and needs power to move real quick. everyone just stays in the 400-520 range.. very strange indeed

Ive owned the P , WX , given much back to this community yet now get crucified for chatting about 850 in 850 forums.

Some at TC give those that didn't blow there money in 800w slime the label malcontents for posting there feelings on device..yes some get a little out of hand in wrong forum but show restraint when given such label.

I love my Treo, but it IS embarrassing when I can't get a signal on my fancy @$$ phone while standing next to someone chatting away a 10 cent clamshell.

Well said. No phone can have it all. I've had a Mogul/Titan, RAZR2, Touch and 800w - all have things I like & dislike.

The perfect phone doesn't exist IMHO. Which makes it amusing for me when people desperately need to defend their choice of phones, and/or bash the choices of others. I'm not even sure what phone I like best, so I'm in no position to lecture or bash others! And ... it's just a phone!

I've gone back to my Touch, waiting for the Diamond.

I really liked the front keyboard and one-handed operation of the 800w. But after using the Touch, a bright & flush screen is now a must for me (a recessed screen just isn't very 'touchable' for me - had same problem with Mogul as 800w).

If the Treo Pro has a brighter screen with better battery life and a decent keyboard (I like the looks of the 800w's keyboard better), it could be a great phone.

Can anyone wager a guess as to when this will be available? I hope it's AT&T and not T-mobile.

T-Mo won't have Palm devices. They haven't by now, why would they?

I think it will be introduced with 2 months.

and maybe ATT won't buy Palm devices , iPhone is enough for them.

T-Mobile doesn't care about Palm, so I doubt they'll carry it.

AT&T's a trickier question. Historically, they tend to avoid carrying nearly identical phones, and they've already committed to the Blackjack III, which is also a 320x320 touchscreen WM 6.1 front facing QWERTY device. They're also mostly a Samsung shop, at least as far as non-Apple smartphones, so they were pretty much guaranteed to pick the BJ3 over the Treo.

The wildcard here is that they do carry both the BlackJack II and the Motorola Q9h. So they might be willing to bend on WM pro devices too.

No official announcement = not official. All we've heard about the BJIII are rumors. However, I don't think that they'll stop at just one device. I doubt there is much more incremental cost with adding another smartphone, and it just helps AT&T's marketing campaign, which seems to tout the number of smartphones it carries.

looks like the poster in the palm.cn site is an insider or perhaps an employee of palm who leaked out the device. the pictures shown are taken from a DVT unit, in fact it was shown in one of the pictures indicating DVT unit and not for resale. the serial number and IMEI were scratched off to hide it.;)

DVT units go to advertising agencies too...you know the guys that make those fancy glamour shots for the device? I'd also imagine 3rd party companies for accessories get them.

Plus, if you're down the street from one of the factories that's actually making the device, it's probably not too hard to get these devices.

I'm not aware of Palm ever purposefully leaking information. I know it's a popular meme on the 'nets out there but there is zero evidence for it. And when your product manufacturing is handled by a 3rd party in Asia, it's pretty hard to "control" what happens, try as they do.

I always use the 'disable touchscreen while on call' setting.
I have GIGANTIC ears.
Without these physical 'Softkeys' how am I going to select certain menu's?

We have confirmation that the softkeys are NOT there in the new article on the homepage. Apparently it defaults to being locked on a call unless you press a specific button. Knowing that, now the design does look just slightly wasteful in the height of it.
