SGH-i780

While we're still technically right that the SGH-i780 won't be coming to the US, it does appear that a variant of it will, the SGH-i788, according to the::unwired. Their sleuthing through some FCC docs revealed that some of the drawings for it, it looks pretty much identical to the SGH-i780. Likely the only real difference will be added support for the US radio bands.

We had a hands-on with the SGH-i780 in January, hoping for awesome things. This device is a Windows Mobile 6 Pro device (6 at the time, though maybe we'll get 6.1?), with a 320x320 flush touchscreen and a front-facing keyboard and WiFi and 3G and GPS and ...well, you get the picture.

We were really hoping the SGH-i780 would be a Treo-killer and it nearly was, except for this:

No 5-way? UGH.

That is a little optical mouse that the i780 (and probably the i788) uses instead of a standard 5-way. All well and good, but trying it in either “mouse” or “swipe” mode is an exercise in pain and frustration. Didn't we tell you that Desktop Metaphors Don't Belong On Mobile? Hopefully Samsung will follow Sony Ericsson's lead and add a standard D-pad next to this silly little mouse.

Thanks, I will be looking for i788 when it comes. I am definitely interested.
Got my i780 yesterday and agree both navigation methods are extremely frustrating

It sounds like it would be. I would still like to give the device a try. Let us know if it gets any better after time.
Wow sounds great...... Its a shame about the optical mouse though. An optical mouse sounds like a horrible idea but I've never tried one.
I watched the CNET video on the SGH-i780 and the optical pad navigation didn't look that bad. The presenter commented on the navigation but I couldn't understand whet he said. Can some one else figure out what he says about the directional pad. It sounds like he says that it is not as fast as a 4way. http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001703,42045188p,00.htm

A few days into using I've switched between the mouse and the 4-way "swipe-pad" (you swipe your thumb over it) a few times.

Both are slower than a conventional 4-way D-pad, but both can be enjoyable at times (in a kind of meditative zen-way) to use.

they have different advantages and disadvantages. It looks like I'll settle with the 4-way on the whole, though their are "fields" on some programmes/menus that you cant get into this way and there the mouse (or stylus) comes in useful.

The 780's navigation methods are certainly slower than the conventional ones, but now I accept that, they can be enjoyable to use (though with occasional frustration thrown in).

On the phone as a whole, it looks and feels sleek and modern (certainly compared to my old Treo 650). I am getting used to Windows Mobile and though it has its frustrations (pop-up "are you sure?" messages every time I want to delete an email and the calendar which is pretty unusable/pointless outside its "day" view - I'm a long time Palm/Datebk user and used to love its "week-view") I don't find it as different to or slower to use than palm as I expected.

The phone is a bit square and slab like and would have benefitted with a bit of rounding of corners so it sat in the hand better, but the overall slimness and weight is great.

Overall it is a bit slower to use than palm but its capabilities and quality make up for that and I would recommend it.
