Sprint Q2, er,Q9c to Hit Nov 23rd

Update: Looks like out intuition that it was the same clueless person who used a PalmOS screenshot on the image at right who also dubbed the Sprint Q9c the "Q2." Both have been fixed at Sprint's promo site. It will indeed be the Q9c, so we can breathe a sigh of relief about that. Then take another breath and hold it until Sprint releases the sucker on Black Friday.

Alright, I've had it. Motorola, listen up: You are not HTC. If you want to be HTC, you need to crank out a ton of different form factors. Just because you can't develop a coherent naming strategy doesn't mean you're competing with HTC. It's just silly.

I'm referring, of course, to the Smartphone-Formerly-Known-As-the-Motorola-Q9. Sprint's version is now apparently going to be known not at the “Q9C,” but as the “Q2.” Take that with a grain of salt, however, because the promo site that names it as such also slaps a PalmOS screenshot on the sucker. So what I'm saying is we can still believe in a Christmas miracle - Motorola and Sprint not confusing things by slapping a “2” after the “Q” instead of a “9.”

In any case, it's rumored to hit on Black Friday for $149.99 after rebates.

People are posting at various sites that they are going to get this device over the 755p and centro. Someone who has the centro is already going to ebay it because of the q's keyboard. Why would sprint bring this device out to compete with the centro?

Incidently, the "Q2" name has been around for awhile on this device.

Witness the first mention of it back in Jun/July in Smartphone & PPC Mag:
Motorola Q2

Windows Mobile 6 Standard: http://motorola.com, http://verizonwireless.com

The Q2 is similar in size to earlier versions of the device. It has a slightly faster processor and more internal RAM and flash ROM for data storage. The Q2s QWERTY keypad has larger keys than earlier versions of the device and has a 2 megapixel camera. This is another quad-band GSM/EDGE-capable Smartphone that includes Bluetooth capability, but not Wi-Fi. A CDMA version of the Q2 is also expected.

Experts comments: The Q2 is thin, feature packed, and comes with a QWERTY keyboard that seems especially usable when compared with the original Q and even the BlackJack. I like the keys that launch the built-in apps, located on the bottom row. (Hal Goldstein) The important thing to me is that a CDMA version will be available that will work on the Verizon network. Verizon's national coverage is just better then anyone else. (Don McDougall)

Although the funny part is it's Sprint that will call it the Q2, not Verizon.

The Q9c is now listed on Sprint's website.

They're listing the built-in GPS functionality, so I wonder if the Q9c is going to get the Rev A./GPS enable update Malatesta reported?

Nope, evidently it has GPS right now, out of the box

People are reporting it works with Google Maps just fine.

Yeah, I've been reading some of the early adopter reports on sprintusers and everythingq. I was hopeful after reading your article the new Q would have it. I'm waiting for someone to try it with third-party GPS apps like Tom Tom or something. I'm curious to see if A-GPS is any better or worse for turn-by-turn navigation than regular GPS. Sprint has very good data coverage in the city I live in.

Do you think it will also get the Rev A. upgrade in January?

Well, the GPS in the Q9c does use satellites as I just tried one briefly (in store)--when you launch GMaps and hit "My location" you'll see a little window pop-up that says "Satellites...0" as it tries to connect. On the Q9h, I hear it needs at least 3 to get a location.

Seeing as I'm in NYC and was indoors, I didn't wait for the signal to acquire but since it was taking at least 1 minute, that hints that it was using standalone mode as that was the same behavior as my two SirfIII systems. So assuming 3rd party compatibility, it'll work just like any GPS system.

Re: Rev A I have no idea.

There is zero mention on Sprint's site about a RevA update. Same with the Touch.

So I don't know if Sprint is just CTA and not promising anything (cough, Mogul fiasco, cough) or there are no plans. I'm betting both will get it but Sprint is not pre-announcing anymore ;)
