New Treo Revealed! (Story edited)

Image removed

Enterprising WMExperts / TreoCentral user scottymomo has discovered quite the interesting site over at Palm (now taken down). The images appear to be from a flash presentation for the [edited: a new treo]. We're basically looking at what people have been hoping for in the Treo for a long, long time:

Is the Treo 850 going to be called the Treo Pro??

Check out this flash demo of the Treo Pro and attached screenshots... looks like the 850 leaked images screenshots... has a touch screen..take a look before it disappers!

http://learning.palm.com/splg/shark_week_54321/

Reset button, 3.5 mm headphone jack, wireless button on the side, power button up top to name a few quick things I saw...

enjoy!

Looks good :D

The separate 3.5mm jack and the exodus of the 680-ish grill speaker makes me think the 800w crowd just got duped...

Very nice, thanks for the link. I will wait for this phone.

With this knowledge, I don't have to crave the HP Ipaq 910 any longer.

I will take one.

Wow. That phone is hot.

The real live pics before arent as good as these. Great scoop!

I feel so sorry for us Palm OS users. I am sure we would be drooling over this if it were Palm OS.

Man if they are gonna sell this for $199, i can see why Palm ordered over 5 million phones for next year.

wow. that phone looks tight.

Cool. Does it have aGPS?

didn't take long for them to remove it (shocker)

Does that imply that CDMA users aren't Pro users? ;)

I would love a CDMA version of this with aGPS and a better battery than the 800w, but I realize how unlikely that is.

Edit: Wow, that was fast. Glad I chose to save the pictures before Palm forced them down anyway. :p

What's this week's podcast gonna be about? :)

Kind of Appleish from the rear? IMO, it looks good.

An interview with Anton about SPB day and some general sprint news.

We recorded at 3 pm this afternoon.

Wow I love my 800w but that looks nicer and a 3.5mm jack! I feel dupped. Lame.

The only saving grace is that this will probably be GSM only and I prefer CDMA and Sprint due to the data plans.

If this comes out for Sprint especially in the coming months... I'm gonna be pissed.

not to mention the rumored 1500mah battery vs. the 800w's 1150mah one

You guys are always getting burned by bad timing!!!! Sorry to hear it.

Shazam!

Not to be a party-pooper, but I don't see why they can't make the screen bigger. The 5-way and hard buttons seem to take up way to much real-estate and there's no need for such big left and right borders around the screen.

The old Treo 300 had a screen that took up more 2/3 the front area of the phone. Treo 600-755p looked like more than 1/2. Ever since the Centro, the screen seems to be even downsized more.

Sorry for the crappy photochop - but this is more like it!

wow. that's a heck of a lot slicker than the 800w. love mine, but it doesn't win any beauty pageants....

For those of us who weren't quick enough, did anyone grab the video? If so, can you post it?

Thanks in advance!!!

mr2racer - I second your rendition of the Treo Pro. A larger sceen would be a definite positive.

But all-in-all these teaser photo-ops are intriging.

Gee Dieter - just go grab the images off of Engaget!

Though it is not radically different, that looks more like something the 800w should have been wrapped in.

Didn't someone from Apple's design team join Palm recently?

Hmmm... so close to good, but what's up with the Centro keyboard? Unfortunately that's a dealbreaker in my book. The whole idea of a Treo over the myriad of slabs is the keyboard and the constant interaction with the device via the keyboard. This looks just as tiny as the Centro, which I just can't work with. Hate to say it after 5 Palms (3 Treos), but I'm thinking the BJ3 is looking like the front facing QWERTY champ for GSM. Wish the 800w (even with its plain looks) was coming to GSM instead of this.

I guess know we know what phone palm is placing a big order for now.

http://gizmodo.com/5036792/palms-ordering-up-millions-of-smartphones-for-2009

That thing looks ... let's put it this way: the 800w is a slap in the face to those who got the phone...

This phone, if real, may well be what palm is striving to achieve...

I agree , I wouldnt be mad if it came out a year or so after the 800W but if this phone comes out 2-3 months later it will feel like a slap in the face.

did 700w owners feel the same way when the 750 came out with no antenna and the soft touch paint?

Well, since it seems that most folks really like their 800w's, I'm not sure I understand why it's a "slap in the face" to us that another phone comes out, whether it be a month or a year later. It's not as if it's coming out on CMDA.

It wouldn't matter about the 800w owners, if the 850 is GSM like earlier predictions. Or Treo Pro. It's good because it copies HTC... Whatever. Back to the point... what a shame for the 800w owners, but unless they want to go through the hassle of carrier changes, the Treo Pro/850 wouldn't be available to them regardless. Just like the 700w... you could've gotten mad that you didn't get the 750, but it wasn't even in the same radio band! Let alone carrier... it would only seem like a slap in the face to me if Sprint had exclusive rights to it and had it available in the next few weeks

maybe this one will go to VZW.

Has anyone confirmed that this is real? If so, is anyone sure that it's going to be GSM?

ya bares a HUGE resemblance to the GSM 850 mockups. Id bet thats the GSM 850 (flush touchscreen as in the specs, same centro keyboard layout). Id wager thats the GSM 850 and CDMA wont ever see it, its the 800 is gsm form

Looks hot I hope we see it in APAC sooner rather than later and I hope the pricing is competitive!

Has anyone confirmed that this is real? If so, is anyone sure that it's going to be GSM?

Some of the posts on the web blogs have actually been removed... Tre0central's included...

You know what that means ;)

Wow

well I can tell you why it would be a slap in the face.

for the past years that the 750 has been realeased CDMA 700wx users were awaiting the next and greatest cmda phone by palm that would be just as good (if not better) than the 750. (Internal Antena, Wifi, wm6, and maybe some GPS)

I can't tell you how long I have been waiting for the 800w, studding this forum like a mad man for leaked photos or information.

I don't think i'm far off to say that most of us here have been a little more than eager waiting for specs and a release of the 800w.

However a few months before the release (once we finally received a official 800w forum on here) Poof! pop's up photos, and a forum for a new device (GSM go figure) that is not equal to the 800w, rather far superior.

I remember feeling a bit shafted seeing how thick the 800w looked in the photos compared to the 850 (pro). The 850 was far more sleek, and had a stylish design I think most people were hoping for with the treo 800w.

Now being that the specs are most likely near the same with both phones (besides battery, 3mm headphones, and a slim shinny shell) I don't see too many people getting all antsy over a future CMDA treo phone anytime soon.

This sort of reminds me of a comedy sketch i viewed in years past; of a guy who bought a new computer (the something 5000) and as soon as he got home he would see a commercial for a new one released. He drove back to the computer store where they are talking crap about the 5000 model and how they plan to throw away all those piles of junk to make room for the 6000 model. Which the man buys, comes home and the whole thing happens all over.

LOL yeh not quite the same being this is over two different network types; however I do understand the slap in the face comment.

Don't know what the big deal is. I'm not impressed with that phone. I'm quite happy with my 800w. I definately do not feel like I've been slapped in the face.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't get what's so much better about this phone than the 800w -- all I'm seeing is a bigger battery and the 3.5mm jack. I'll admit that I crave 3.5 jacks, but ever since I started using Windows Mobile devices it's been less of a concern since I wind up with a separate audio player anyway. Larger batteries can always be picked up aftermarket (Seidio, anyone?) and the cost of picking one up is more than offset by SERO vs. AT&T's or T-Mobile's prices (and 3G coverage penalties).

Is the camera better than 800w's? Is the screen >320x320? Is the device noticeably thinner than 800w? The keyboard appears to be Centro-style and therefore worse than 800w's, so I'm not really seeing a lot to be excited about here.

EDIT: If the screen is flush-mounted, that would be a perk. Still not worth using a Centro-style keyboard, though. Does anyone here actually prefer the Centro keyboard to the 800w keyboard?

It could just be a generic screen pic, but did you notice the upper right corner where the 'X' for closing applications is?
It looks just like X-Button.
That would be too cool.

I am drooling all over myself! :D

Has anyone confirmed that this is real? If so, is anyone sure that it's going to be GSM?

The pics are all fake.
The rumors are all fake.
The TC give away contest is fake.
Our very lives are all fake.
Reality is fake.
Death is fake.

Woops, I got a little too deep there.

Some days most people around here make sense and other days I just wonder what's in the water. A Centro keyboard? Come on...."Oh but this doohicky is over there, and that dookicky is over here now!..." WOW! Why HAS the screen real estate percent of planform decreased? Why ARE all of these devices now using 1/4 of the front surface of the phone for 5 buttons? If you ARE going to use the tiny Centro keyboard, why not try and fit VGA? Oh big deal, now the "Apple" designers are in da house, which means everything will now be toyish and 'cute'...great. To me, the 'REAL" issue is how to get full VGA and a 'functioning' keyboard in one device (it wouldn't hurt my feelings if SOMONE threw PTT in there as well, but we'll leave that to Verizon, i'm sure...), but all we get these days is the robbery of Peter for the sake of Paul. I'm waiting for .."But this one has textured MOOD paint!....changes to purple when you get an email!!!!" I have this bad feeling that 4 years from now, people will be complaining that the 700wx was the last really well built 'get it done' device. Now everything is cheaply made and ready to be replaced in 3 months, which conflicts w/ Palms' 2 year dev cycle....but that's another issue...
Yeah, BlackJack 3 looks like the current ride, which is bad for a sprint guy like me....I AM SO....FRUSTRATED!

Wow! ...Sorry about all that guys!

I think the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is the only really new information, really puts this device over the top from other WM competitors, and competitive to the blackberry Bold, with similar specs. If they put in a good browser (e.g. Opera) and a good media player (like HTC Audio Manager for example) then this would be the device to beat.

Surur

well now, first posted on 04:28, made frontpage on 05:43 & taken down on 07:41. Palm's phone lines have been busy. Seem's somebody's *** on Palm's HQ is being sliced, diced & roasted over a small fire :D :D :D
P.S.: Not impressed with the power switch on top.

This is for those who use GSM plans. Looks nice, but Palms is still not making anything new, just updating their Phones.

its SO hot

They had to screw something up, and in this case, the most obvious is the Centro keyboard. As much as I try to like it (the kbd on the Centro), it irritates me every time I try to use it.

Yeah, I'll stick with my 800w keyboard, thanks. Hate the Centro gummy keys.

uh, guys:

Lovin' my 755p. Crappy Centro keyboard, smaller screen, and WM - sounds great!

Man, what ***-tard decided that the Centro keyboard was a good idea? I still haven't met anyone who likes that thing.

My guess is it is cheaper to produce and assemble. Better for the bottom line.

Not impressed by the KB downgrade, WM, and small screen. But, I gotta admit that this is the best looking and best featured device in a loooooong time from Palm. I won't buy it due to WM, but my perception of Palm Inc has come outta the basement. If this is the trend then watch out. 3.5mm audio ... whooda thunk it? Wow.

Amazing how little it takes to please a Palm fan these days. :p

Harper, I'm with you on the screen situation. Been moaning about it for years. Is Apple the only company that understand that smartfones are desperate for screen real estate? Dude, somebody demand that that baby gets pushed to the edges, even for the Treo SSS. HVGA and no keyboard on this baby with Palm OS (Nova?) is my dream, but I would settle happily for the KB and SSS. Palm has shown they are in the 21st century now tho!

I like the phone minus the keyboard and WM. The real reason I won't buy it is due to WM. By the way does the new Treo 800 have a content manager since it is WM?

I'll be keeping my 755P and waiting to see if the Palm version of the treo pro comes out for Sprint.

it won't.. Only the centro will sport the old palm OS. The treo pro will be what you see and aimed toward business. The Nova phone will compete with the kb-less phones like the iphone and concentrate moreso on utilizing the web..something you'd need a widescreen & virtual kb to do.

Why do you constantly insist that Palm will go back to a two-handed single-tasking design? They're past the Tungsten X stage.

Only because palm said the nova phone would be centered on a web browsing/web app experience. Last i checked, the small square screen made that a bad experience..

If you want multitasking one handedness, palm wants you to buy a wm treo.

Its a pretty bad experience on any portable device, even the iPhone with its large screen, or even the nokia tablets. Its good for a pinch but pretty horrible in general. From what they've said, I sort of picture something more alone the lines of the old Palm "Web Clipping" applications. Sort of how the iPhone for example has a specific eBay application, a specific MLB application, that sort of thing.

Give us SCREEN real estate! It's the #1 shortcoming of mobile devices.

I'm not sure palm is spending all that money to develop a new OS that will simply give ebay like apps that you see on the iphone. Me thinks the old palm OS could do that.

But regardless, as said above, palm will need a nice screen whether it has a kb or not. Certainly, i think a nav button at the bottom would be awesome for more one hand use. Voice navigation could play a part. I just don't see a huge need for a hard qwerty kb if i can have more screen.

I think you're mistaken on why they needed to develop a new operating system entirely if you think the only reason they're doing it is the web experience. For one, Garnet does not allow true multitasking (the biggest shortcoming that everyone takes note of). Two, it doesn't allow a protected memory space for applications. Three, it can only support a cellular radio and bluetooth, or bluetooth and wifi, but not all three at once (and not GPS thrown in there either). Four, it simply looks like something that was developed 6 years ago (and the basic operating system that it never changed much the appearance of was 12 years old).

The web experience is a secondary concern. Sure, they seem to be talking about that a bit, but for most people, you can't exactly sell them on these features when other mobile operating systems have had them for years.
