Great New Soft Keyboard

Just yesterday I hoped that we'd see a thumable QWERTY/suretype mashup keyboard from HTC, well today it looks like somebody's beaten them to the punch: CooTek. If you're one of the 800,000 Touch users, it behooves you to go check out TouchPal. As you can see from the screenshot above, it's eminently thumb-able and has a very nice word prediction setup. It also handles punctuation very well.

Basically you can just tap tap tap away and use the auto-word completion dictionary to get your words right. But if you need to be exacting, you can tap-slide in any direction to get a specific character or punctuation mark. The upshot is that each button can put out up to 4 different characters, but in 90% of your usage you don't really have to think about it. Using it for 10 minutes has pretty much convinced me to make it my primary input method.

Best of all, it's a free download until Dec 8th, 2008 (a bit random, but I'll take it). It comes in both QVGA and VGA flavors.

They claim you can get up to 300 characters a minute. Check out the video after the break to see somebody with faster thumbs than I have do just that.

That is a nice looking kb - and, well, since YOU like it, it's a no brainer! ;)

The Sprint Touch is looking better to me every day!
I installed the app today on my Mogul and I really like it. I am getting closer to one-handed operation like my 700Wx.
Btw: To switch to the touchpal, you just need to hit that impossible-to-tap-without-the-stylus arrow next to the keyboard icon on the bottom of the screen. Then you can select touchpal from the dropdown list.
after installin it on 8525 and selecting the option touchpal, it is coming back to the stnd keyboard.. any ideas?.. mean i never saw the touchpal input screen..
I got the same problem, it always switches back to the normal keyboard.
Could it be a language problem? I have German language of WM5.
Oh, It could totally be a language thing. Hm.

I do notice that it reverts back to the normal kb after every soft reset.

The folks there are very responsive. They replied to me (and to another user) incredibly quickly over email. I'd send 'em one. :)
I had the same problem with the PocketCM kb on my Mogul. Maybe this is a bigger issue than with just this kb?
There's an app around here somewhere that lets you select your default Keyboard even after a reset. I installed it and now Touchpad stays as my default. I'll try to find it.
Have you tried setting the kb in Settings -> Input rather than the triangle pop-up menu?
yes - I tried setting it as the default a few times and it never stuck. No big deal - I returned it anyway.

Waiting on the Touch........
oh my gosh.

This thing looks incredible. I just DL'd the video. I'm half the way through it and wow. It looks like the video user is using a Mogul or similar device.

Surur - do you still have a Touch? Can you test it?

Wow. I can hardly wait for this.
use this to keep Touchpal the default. Install the app, launch it, and select which SIP you want as the default.
Okay. I am unfamiliar with WM handhelds. I have a POS device, the 755.

I'm very impressed with what I have learned from the forthcomming Sprint Touch.

One very important use of the keyboard (in addition to the obvious email / SMS) is the ability to launch programs with a long keypress (makes a keyboard button seem like a hard side-button) and looking up contacts.

I have allot of contacts. I use the phone feature constantly on my PDA - moreso than replying to emails.

I love the ability I have to look up John Smith by typing any of the combos:
JS
John S
JSm
JSmit

Does the program you posted work for any WM device (including Touch)?

Can this keyboard be used with contact / phone list filtering like I have today?

I'm going to tell you right now - losing one-button shortcuts to contacts and apps is going to be painful. Very painful. I haven't used PalmOS in over a year and I still miss it.

So: autolookup. I have good news, bad news, good news.

Good news: inside the contact app, it does to the exact sort of auto-search filter you're looking for. The contacts app also has a strip of letters across the top for jumping down in your list.

bad news: TouchPal isn't a standard WinMo keyboard - it seems to use its own dictionary. So what that means is it doesn't actually give Windows Mobile its text until you choose your word. What THAT means is it's not very easy (read: well nigh useless) to use with autofilter stuff like contact search or typing in email addresses in new mails.

good news: you can go into the standard WinMo Phone app and use the t9 keypad to type a name and it will autofilter down. So JSM would just be 576.

You get your 9 speed dials on the cube, after that getting to a contact takes a bit longer on a standard touch without 3rd party apps.

 Thanks!
Thanks for your answer, Septimus. I'm not sure I like the sound of that, but I know you are right on track.

From the video on TouchPal, I think I will be fine with SMS and Email.

I will have to see for myself how well I can navigate the contacts and enter appointments.

You know, the T9 thing would be fine though. The way you described it would work very simillar to the way I do it now. So, in this scenario I would use the built in dialer sort feature instead of TouchFlo.

I hope there are similar apps to my freequently used Palm stuff.

There almost surely will be. What are your main apps?

The most critical for me (everything else I use likely will be fine):
- PdaNet - probably a non-issue (like you said in a different thread)
- CallRec - used for recording calls and for voice memos.
- Butler (used mainly for key launcher and the correct lights for missed calls, etc.). Used with KeyCaps. This, as you pointed out - may be missed greatly.
- Tom Tom 6.0 Navigator - not sure about built in GPS on the Touch. Worse case - I assume it would be same as it is today (external receiver).
- Backup Buddy
- TakePhone (I love this one) - I'm somewhat scared about the lookup of contact info. on the Touch.
- Card Reader
- VoiceDial - should be a non issue - maybe better with BT dialing.

Actually, I had to switch from POS to WM Treos, and I found the lack of one button shortcuts to contact and apps not that painful. Tap-tap. Two taps instead of one button. The fact that state is maintained in WM makes it' well worth it.

I agree - nice to have, but not "painful".

- With WM6 the internet connect app is superb -- as long as your carrier doesn't disable it like jerks. PDANet is available for WM, though.
- Call Rec - tsk.. there are plenty of voice recording apps (and it's built into notes), but you still won't be able to record a call unless it's in speakerphone
- Yeah, you might have to cobble a few apps together to match butler... I was never a big butler guy so I'm probably the wrong person to ask...
- TT: you'll need an external GPS. The good news is that TomTom seems to perform much better on WinMo than it does on Palm. Even on the Touch. Plus - you get wls.live.com and google maps working with gps too.
- Sprite Backup. It's great
- Card Reader... hm. you can actually just browse the device (and hence the card) over activesync directly.
- VoiceDial depends on which device you have. Most htc devices (touch included? can't remember) have a nice, simple voicedial app from HTC. Otherwise you're stuck with Microsoft's Voice Command, which tries to do too much and generally fails at it. :( There are other 3rd party apps out there, though...

Dieter, CooTek has released TouchPal V2. All the issues mentioned above should have been resolved. For instance, you could enable "display default candidate inline" to make it always feed the input into the current app.

There're quite a few other important updates like error corrections, resizable layout, etc. You'd better check it out. :)

The new demo video:

simply the best choice for now~ cannot wait to see what they can do for v3
Yep, I need to switch back to a pro device to check out v2 for sure. I'm also interested in giving the new version of the resco keyboard a shot.
Zoomboard is really cool, and i have big hands and it works..
Update: after using touchpal for awhile, im a firm believer that this keyboard is great!, i have pro and will never look back...i can text just as fast as i did on my treo now.
