Software updates: Live Mesh Mobile, Kinoma Play

Posted on Friday, Dec 5, 2008 by Phil Nickinson

Microsoft has pushed out an update for its Live Mesh suite, including Live Mesh for Mobile (as well as the Windows and Mac desktop clients). Nothing major to talk about, but it’s worth grabbing.

Live Mesh The Fixes:

  • Server-side performance and reliability enhancements.
  • Minor usability improvements.

You’ll be informed of the update as soon as you log in to Live Mesh Mobile on your phone.

Kinoma Play Kinoma Play: We could be accused of overdoing it on the Kinoma Play updates, and maybe we are. But that’s how impressed we are with the frequency and manner in which they’re being rolled out. And there’s some pretty good stuff this time around.

  • The UI now takes advantage of the full native resolution of your phone. If you have a Touch Diamond, Pro or HD (lucky son of a gun), or the SE Xperia X1, everything’s going to look much sharper.
  • The app is better at detecting when you switch from a cellular connection to WiFi.

Get the full list of updates here. As usual, Kinoma Play will automatically inform you of the update once you’re in the application.

Note to devs (rant alert!): This is how it’s done. There are still too many Windows Mobile apps from reputable (and major) software houses that don’t automatically inform of updates, no matter how small they may be. We’re not going to get into who does this well and who doesn’t. It’s pretty obvious. Blanket press releases may get noticed for the big jumps, but it’s the little things that can really grab our attention, and keep us (and our dollars) coming back. /rant

Hear hear! Props to Kinoma for the steady stream of regular updates and letting me know automatically when there's an update. This has been by far the most impressive purchased software experience I've ever had with a WM product both in terms of the quality of the product and the ongoing updates/additions.
I followed the advice of all those who love Kinoma and purchased it...but was very surprised to find that Kinoma does not play my .avi movies, what gives?
They claim .avi is a "dead" file format, insinuating that its main use was for pirated content. You'll have to throw TCPMP into the mix.
