What a waste of time, energy and $$. The 800W and Treo Pro should have been the same device with exception of the cell radio. My opinion says the ideas should have been combined between the two.

In the End the 800w still has poor voice quality and poor Bluetooth performance that goes all the way back to the Handspring Treo 600 on Palm os. From what I have heard the GSM Treo's are no better in this regard than the CDMA versions, so will the Pro be better than the 800W?

I miss the real keyboard of my Treo 700WX, but I am not looking back since buying a Touch with WM6.1. I can live with the crappy onscreen Faux butons for good voice quality and good Bluetooth performance.

That BB looks horrible. JMO though..

IMHO, Palm like most user's sentiments should release identical phones to both carriers (CDMA/GSM). This way its fair for everyone.

GPS appears to require a 3rd party software with subscription still. I always thought GPS on mobile phones were like the car GPS where the app is already bundled.

It doesn't look like it will be subsidized by AT&T. By fall time frame, it can be bought unlocked at $549 from palm's site.

Wow, I'm pumped. $549 is a great unlocked device price. The size is also great - almost identical to the iPhone 3G, but slightly narrower and slightly thicker - it's 4.49x2.36x.53 inches and only 4.69oz. Specs look great.

I'll definitely be buying this one. Good job bypassing AT&T Palm - you'll get this device to market about 3-5 months faster this way IMO. I can see AT&T picking this one up eventually.

have to say I certainly like the looks of the Pro better, expect the KB - it is straight and the 800w has a slight "smile". Right?

It also looks like Palm is now using more WM6.1 features such as the native threaded SMS and the phone app. I really liked Palm's threaded SMS since it also threaded MMS, but at least this device can do MMS. I'm ok with the implementation of the phone app as well, it was a bit cluttered to have it all on the today screen. I wonder how the End key works now though? More like HTC devices?

Certainly, more than one would not have thought that the Treo Pro and the iPhone competed... but then again more than one have certainly thought that they do. Personally, I'm in the "not yet" camp. That, and being solidly in the CDMA camp lands me in the "cares less" camp.

Ok... it looks great and all and I am a Treo fanboy (I've had a treo since the "tri-corder" Treo 300 days!) but from a sheer spec standpoint, other than palm's usual top ringer switch, one touch wi-fi button, why should I not just get an unlocked TYTN2 for a hundred bucks less on the open market?

Sure its thinner slightly--but I have a Treo 700 with the Seidio 3200 battery now, and I still manage to stick it in my pocket.

The chipset is the same, the RAM/ROM amounts are the same, TYTN2 camera is 3mpx; Treo Pro is 2, and there are cooked ROMs for days for the TYTN2...

This obviously should have been released last year... With the likes of the Samsung Omnia and HTC Touch/(pro), Palm better have another game plan in the next 6 months!

didn't see anything in the palm website where they are posting the Treo Pro talking about the release date is september. can someone confirm this because september is less than 2 weeks from now.

Oh man, I just got my 800w from Sprint .... I wonder how long it will take for a Sprint version (and if I should send the 800w back as it's still within the 30 days) .. ugh, another hard decision!

Man, Palm gets me stoked after I swore not to fall again for their smartphone reality distortion field... man! Is it just me or Palm is taking the Apple route verbatim? The packaging shown in the video is 99.9% close to a traditional iPhone/iPod/iTouch... I wonder if Cupertino will have a legal say in the matter?

No US carrier: I was 100% positive that no carrier in the US had picked up the device. The leaked AT&T roadmap never spoke of a Palm device in the pipeline, the only roadmaps that talked about it were Sprint's and Verizon's but the 800w took care of that. Maybe it is best for Palm in the short future as Europe is a stronger market and they pay in Euros... also I wonder if the local US carriers got shaken by previous Palm experiences (I know Verizon was tired of supporting the 700p) and thus decided not to go with Palm on this iteration?

US pays full retail? In my case it wouldn't make a difference however, as I just started an AT&T contract and I would not have been able to get the subsidized price anyways had AT&T decided to carry this device. $549 is not bad for an unlocked phone with such capabilities BTW.

Now I have to work on the hard portion of the deal and convince my wife I really need that new and shiny piece of smartphone-heaven...

I see that the Treo Pro is running WM 6.1. I wonder if there are any plans to release that phone with the Palm operating system? Unless there has been some type of change WM 6.1 with Sprint still does not have a content manager. Which means that I can't even have something as simple as a call tone on my phone. Why wasn't this addressed and corrected for Sprint users with WM 6.1?

well for some the unlocked feature is worth it but how do I justify $549 versus $300 for iphone 3G ??? not--too bad it looks pretty neat. Not the first time Palm has asked for a high price >$400 for a new model. Obviously they'd rather make say $200 each on 20,000 phones rather than $50-100 on a million! :rolleyes:

Awfully hard to compete in the US with the bb bold at unsub prices. Don't see it happening.

My theory is that AT&T doesn't want to overlap with the blackjack III. Similar phones, but the blackjack has been a consistent AT&T favorite through the years, so maybe the BJIII gets preferential treatment and the Treo Pro hits early 2009?

Does anybody knows if Skype will work on Treo 850 ?

So suppose I get an unlocked Treo Pro, with which AT&T plan I can use it? I currently have a 1st gen iPhone plan with AT&T and I know my iPhone SIM card will work fine with other phones. But what's the official stance of AT&T on unlocked phones and what plans do they suggest to use?

so everyone has been complaining about this and that. come on guys its been announced and its being released. who cares if it can't stand up to the new BB bold or the iPhone, I don't care if people still say palm is going down the hole. this is the phone all us serious treo users on GSM have been waiting for. don't ruin a good moment cause we will all have this freaking awesome device before christmas and plus the good side is we can all ask for it as christmas presents and not have to pay a penny for it. just hope we have some very nice friends or family to buy it for us. that was my two cents.

welzofstel I understand what your saying but I just wanna say there is something mac friendly and its called the iphone. know I know you want a treo but palm has already decided to focus on WM6.1 I mean sure there is nova coming out but I really think palm has shifted away from what made them so great. its just another move that puts them in a position to dig out of a hole.

I know this is a silly question, but every Treo I have owned was purchased through ATT. Other then a $ subsidized purchase, what is lost if I buy the unlocked version directly through Palm instead of a locked version from ATT? Does the voicemail app work seamlessly if I plug in my current SIM card. Are their any other problems? Thanks.

A person I once talked to from Palm said that it's not likely AT&T will carry any more Palm Windows Mobile devices after the Treo 750. He said that Samsung and HTC are less expensive and have contain all the same features, so they aren't interested in a more expensive model of the same thing. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but he was pretty sure (and he wasn't exactly low on the totem if you know what I mean.)
I speculate that it's a time to market and profit margin thing. Carrier branding, customizations, and testing of the custom software and carrier certifications all take a lot of time, resources, and money to do. Doing just 1 unlocked phone for all is a lot faster to market and easier to produce.

If I didn't just get an iPhone 3G last month for $500. I'd be all over this phone. It's nearly the perfect WM design for my taste. I have a tilt but really dislike the slider keyboard and lack of Palm's SMS app and other UI customizations so I went back to the Treo 750.

Any info if it would have A2DP/AVRCP bluetooth profiles??

Some people will choose this over HTC's offerings, and some will choose the HTC over Palm. Why? Because it fits their needs/wants. I've fiddled with the Tilt, and I didn't like it. I like a front facing keyboard and Palm's special sauce. It fits a niche that some may like/want - touch pro/diamond are also a different niche.

Really, you're comparing apples and oranges because each phone you mention has a different user interface - and that is what ultimately determines what you think is right for you.

Probably the best bet would be to buy and AT&T phone and then flip it onto ebay, and then buy an unlocked phone like Palm. This is exactly what they suggested people do to get a free iPhone 3G. Maybe an iphone 3G would be a perfect target - buy it for $200, unlock it and then sell if for $600, and buy a Touch Pro for $550 and effectively pay only $150.

Again, no future treos with a palm os or new palm os. It will be a unique (for palm) device. We can still only speculate whether palm is going with the kb or not or some kind of slider.

I am so completely stoked that it's being released here with Telstra. It'll be a Next G phone I assume which is fantastic!

I'm 12 months into my contract for my 750, so maybe they'll let me swap it out for the Pro a few months after it's released (once I read actual reviews etc).

For once it just doesn't suck to be in Australia!

I'm excited that this is being released on O2. Vodafone doesn't seem to care much for 3g/internet on phones and this is reflected in their price plans.
