We mentioned Motorola's relatively bad news yesterday regarding their Windows Mobile plans -- namely that they're outsourcing development of WinMo. Check this little tidbit, though. PCMag took a listen to their call on the subject during their conference call and the new CEO Sanjay Jha dropped a mention of, ahem, Windows Mobile 6.5:

“Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform,” Jha said. “We have now targeted new teams which are focused – in California and Seattle – to deliver experiences. That is where we have to differentiate.”

Apparently Moto will have a 6.5 device out in the second half of 2009. We're wondering exactly what 6.5 would include. We do know that the next version of Pocket Internet Explorer, based on desktop IE5, should be getting out to phones in the next few months. What other features are you hoping we'll see before the fabled Windows Mobile 7 hits?

Thanks to Leigh at coolsmartphone for the tip!

Didn't someone leak a WinMo 6.2 plan a few weeks back? Does that mean both, or is 6.2 now 6.5 like Widows 6.1 is now Windows 7? (So confusing... time for another branding rant)
I figured he meant to say WM 6.1.
I hate to say it, but Windows Mobile is far too behind to catch up. No one will care when Windows Mobile is released in 2010 or later. Newcommers IPhone & Android did something Windows Mobile could not, attract customers in droves!
[COLOR="Navy">Business users are still important, and as of now neither Mobile OSX nor Android can be called a robust business OS.

HOWEVER concerning RIM's BB OS, a true business OS and the true competitor to WM, it's another story. WM IS falling behind there.[/COLOR]

Not necessarily true. Look at apple now.. 10 years ago people said it was too late for them, they missed the bus. Provide a product enough people want and they will buy it. I can honestly say i know way WAY more people with windows mobile devices than iphones. Granted its anecdotal but its the sexiness of the device.. how it LOOKS is a bigger factor in people's buying decisions.

First Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots revealed by one of the XDA-Developers hackers.

Consumers don't care about Windows Mobile 6.5 or Windows mobile 7 or anything else. Operating system are tech geek non-sence to most teen age girls. For Microsoft so succeed with any version of Windows mobile for consumers they need a hot device not a hot OS.

Apple is not selling leopard or mac OS for mobile, they are selling iPhones, iPods, and MacBook Airs.

Microsoft needs to show that vendors can create a device that kicks iPhone is the tail without the need and expense on developing their own OS. The end user does not even need to know they are running a Windows OS. All they need to know is that they have a cool device.

On the corporate side we want three things:
1. Air tight security that includes encrpytion of data at rest, encrpytion of data in transit, anti-malware, firewall, intrusion detection and prevention and remote wipe.
2. End-to-end solution that includes managemnt, security, device provisioning and the ability to push corporate policy to devices.
3. Secure access to back office applications and email
