WMExperts Prize-A-Day, Day 15

3

Let's make it a big prize today: A Jabra JX10 Bluetooth Headset - the stylin' black one. Let's just say the WMExperts Store is feeling generous after all of the store reviews you folks posted for Friday's contest (The store also sponsored a Wii for Engadget's contest, if you didn't hear).

How to Win

Over at TreoCentral, there's a new podcast wherein I forced myself to list my "Top 5" Windows Mobile apps (Yes, I'm shameless in my interlinking). I'll cross-post them here after the jump. It's likely, though, that yours are different. It's even more likely that you may disagree with my top 5. So to enter in today's contest, comment on this post with your top 5 apps for Windows Mobile, or criticize mine, or ask our readers if "there's an app that does X" ...pretty much anything Windows Mobile app-related works for me.

Today's contest will be open until noon EST tomorrow, March 6th. In addition to today's cool prize, every entry doubles as an entry for the Grand Prize and the two Second Prizes - A Smartphone of your choice plus $300 to spend in the WMExperts store and a couple of Slingbox Pros.

(Full contest rules are here)

Dieter's Top-5 Windows Mobile Applications

  1. SPB Mobile Shell, a great way to navigate through your Treo faster and easier.
  2. Resco Explorer, a very powerful file explorer, registry editor, and FTP Browser.
  3. Google maps, need I say more?
  4. Pocket Informant, a Calendar/Contacts/Tasks replacement with a ton of features. (I go back and forth, but I always come back)
  5. PdaNet, which automatically sets up Dial-Up Networking. I know it's not technically necessary, but not having to deal with config is worth it for me.

Here are my top 5 apps:
Memmaid
SpriteBackup
Slingbox Player
Microsoft Live
Missing Sync

Dieter, with the exception of Pocket Informant, nice list. Not that I disagree, I just have not heard of it. BUT . . . . based on your recommendation, I just downloaded the trial. More on that later. My list of must have apps would be . .

Magic Button - Microsoft should buy this out and include it on a future upgrade.

Memory Map Weather Radar - I am a weather junkie and this is about the only decent radar app I could find that gives high resolution when zooming in and works great.

Spb Brain Evolution - A whole host of brain games that tracks your progress.

Spb Mobile Shell - A fantastic addition/replacement to my home screen.

Mobile XM Radio (www.musicdock.com/mobile) - while not actually an app, I love this site. It lets me listen to XM radio (you must have an existing XM account) on my Treo.

I've been interested in SPB Mobile Shell since it came out. I think this just prompted me to give it a try, especially since I like the other SPB applications I've used in the past so much.

OK, mine are for Smartphone, so it may be a bit different:

Automatic Keylock - Why they left a keylock time-out off of WM SpE deifes all logic. This free app kept me from chucking my phone and going back to Symbian OS.

Microsoft Live Search - Like Google Maps, but more responsive and reliable.

Illium ListPro - My indispensable project management tool. Too bad there's no Smartphone conduit

Illium eWallet - Keeps me from forgetting every password I know

PhatNotes - Again, why did MS leave notes synchronization off of WM SpE? Pains me that I had to pay for functionality MS should have included, but glad that this great little app is available.

Hey Ken -

re: Pocket Informant. I really do go back and forth on it. I love it. I hate it. Really, the issue is that I find the default Tasks and Calendar UI in WM to be simply horrendous and I'm contantly trying to find a nice replacement. All the contenders I've tried have been too complicated, but PI seems to be the one that most fits my brain.

Now if your talking about productive applications, mine would have to be:

1. Bejeweled
2. Bookworm
3. Sudoku
4. Nine Hole Golf 1.0
5. Number Cruncher

1. SPB Pocket Plus
2. PhoneAlarm
3. PDAnet
4. Google Maps
5. Core Media Player / TCPMP

Dieter,

I like your list. Mine is a little different,

I am also a weather junkie and the best FREE weather app for me is ADB Weather. Next would be like your friend Mike, SplashID. Google Maps is a must have. And since my 6700 doesn't have voice activation out of the box (or at least it didn't when I first purchased it) MS ActiveVoice 1.6 makes my list. Then WisBar Advance Turns my WM in to Vista.

O'kay, here is what I have that is different from above:

1. Impatica Showmate: Project PowerPoint via Bluetooth to any projector/lcd/plasma (requires adaptor)

2. SiriusWM5 -- streaming Sirius using WMP

3. Dockware -- screensaver that uses your pictures

4. iBaby -- turns your PPC/Treo into a baby monitor

5. Total Commander -- great system tool for opening zip files, managing file systems and other data management

My top 5:

1. Papyrus: It makes the pocket outlook so much more user friendly.

2. Facade: Everyone loves to customize things and this program does it best.

3. Fizz Weather: Just a nice and well made weather reporting program.

4. AvantGO: Allows me to view web clips and RSS feeds OFFLINE that can be updated while docked. Saves time by not having to browse over the web with slow speeds.

5. Google Maps: Very impressive speeds and is pretty much the full google maps interface on a small screen.

I just got my Dash, so I'm just starting to get into WM apps, but the ones I love so far:

Google Maps
AvantGo
Opera Mini

And I have a question. I know that WM5 has an "auto" feature for profiles that splits free/busy time, but is there a program that you can program times to change profiles? Like have one profile during work hours and another from one I am off work and want my ringer up louder?

I'm going to go with:
1. Pocket informanat
2. GS finder--an app I have had for a long time that makes it eay for me to search for files
3. Solitaire--the built in one. After trying all kinds of more sophisticated games, I keep coming back.
4. Google maps
5. ORB

google maps
bejwelled
agendus
Slingbox player
pdanet

There are more, but these are great.

My top five apps:
Newsbreak
Facade
Mapopolis
eWallet
PocketTV

A pity I don't use one of those following programs yet (out of being a poor student ;)), but I would pick them as the 5 best ones ever!

1). Any navigation / GPS software...
2). Xynapt from apturion
3). SimulScribe from SimulScribe Inc.
4). SafeGuard PDA from ultimaco safeware (I think it might only be for pro business users, but I'm not sure. Would like to use it anyway!!)
5). Password Safe .mobile from MAFIS Software (if it could only sync! :-( ...) I've got Splash ID (won ;-D), but I don't use it, because I would have to type in all my ~210 account details again...*argh*

(6. BeeTag & Qiro, if everyone WOULD use it...)

My top five are as follows (but not necessarily in ranked order):

1. SBSH PocketBreeze - keeping my Today screen organized with my appointments and tasks is an important function for me.

2. SPB Finance - gotta keep personal finances in order.

3. TCPMP - great for streaming ORB and watching videos.

4. Resco Explorer + Resco Today - file explorer, registry editor, and Today Screen information viewer/app launcher.

5. FlexWallet - for keeping my private information private :)

My top 5:

google maps - great for traffic
ORB - tv on the go
Sudoku - favorite game
Terminal Services - server access from anywhere
Agile Messenger - IM on the go

My top 5 (smartphone) in no particular order:

Resco Diamonds
Webis FlexWallet
Microsoft Live Search
iliumsoft Newsbreak
MMetrics Meter - Because they pay me to use my BlackJack!!!

http://www.justanothermobilemonday.com

Smartphone & Phone Edition compatible list :)

1. Styletap - for Bike or Die ;) a game, my most used application on my 700wx & Q.
2. AE Buttons Plus - Essential task switcher, great for configuring keys on your device.
3. Resco Explorer+Registry - Gotta have a good file manager and registry editor!
4. Mortscript - Automation.automation.automation!
5. TCPMP - gotta give it up for this free, fast media player.

In no particular order:
AutoKeyLock
Live Search
PdaNet
OctroTalk
SleepWell/ProfileSwitch (I use both)
DontForget

I loved SiriusWM5 when it worked, but I did a PRL update and it stopped. Dave at geekstoolbox is trying to figure it out.

Google Maps
TCPMP
Office Mobile
Pocket DVD Studio
Resco

But, what I'm really curious about is Dataviz' Documents to Go for WM. Any thoughts? Comparisons to OM? I love it on Palm OS - similar?

My Top 5 Apps:

1. SBSH iLauncher
2. SBSH PocketBreeze
3. Tillanosoft SmallMenu
4. PIEPlus
5. SKTools

Personally, I still fail to see why everybody loves Google Maps so, in comparison to Live Search. Google Feature-wise, it falls severely short. The only thing it has going for it is that it's somewhat faster at downloading the graphical map data, due to Google throwing so many more servers at the problem than Microsoft does.

My top 5 apps:

Wm5torage
SBSH PocketBreeze
SPB Mobile Shell
O2 Plus
eWallet

I'd love to find an app that allowed me to create multiple alarms (more than the standard built-in 3) and supported vibrate. The Spb Time app would be perfect if it supported vibration alert.

1. FlexWallet
2. Papyrus
3. Mapopolis
4. Total Commander
5. John Codey's Alerts

I couldn't live without these.
...Joe K.
