WMExperts Prize-A-Day, Day 17

Store Images Product Images Accessories Large 574

Time for me to face facts: I'm a bad driver - I use my phone in the car too much. I check maps, I text, I take calls, I've even been known to read an email or two. Bad. Bad Bad. One thing that helps, though, is having a car mount - especially when you're using GPS to map where you are. If, like me, you're bone-headed enough to be interacting with the internets via your smartphone while driving, the least you can do it make sure the smartphone is in a decent position.

Today's prize, therefore, is the Arkon CM910 Vehicle Mount. It should work with pretty much any phone and it includes a suction cup mount, a dash mount (via double stick tape) and a vent mount too. So there aren't many cars that won't accommodate this little bugger somewhere.

How to Win

I gave you my mea culpa - now give us yours. What's the most bone-headed thing you do with your smartphone? Emails during a supposedly romantic dinner? Texting while driving? Leaving the ringer on the movie theater? Comment on this post between now and noon EST tomorrow, March 8th, with your confession of personal smartphone silliness.

Don't Forget: every entry doubles as an entry for the Grand Prize and the two Second Prizes - A Smartphone of your choice plus $300 to spend in the WMExperts store and a couple of Slingbox Pros. I should mention that we only have a few days left in our Prize-A-Day contest, so if you have some special-someone who needs a chance to upgrade their phone (or get a Slingbox!), let them know about us, hey?

(Full contest rules are here)

...and yes, I'm late announcing last week's winners. That'll be up later this afternoon. :)

I'm also guilty of using my Treo in the car too much. I also tend to use it in meetings and lose track of what's going on in the meeting. I can't tell you the number of times I've been asked a question and had the person to repeate the question because I was on my Treo.

Where do I start. The one thing I know I dont do is leave my ringer on in a movie or crowded meeting. I HATE to hear phones and beepers. Now on to the bads, I am very guilty of dialing and texting while driving. I always figure what could happen in a split second? I am sure one day, I will figure that out the hard way. Now the worse of the worse, is playing a game on my Treo while my wife is trying to watch American Idol. You should see the bad looks when my game obscures the next contestents singing!

Sometimes I'll play with my phone when it's a red light and then get honked at to go after the light's been green for probably some time. I don't usually do this, but there are those lights that take more than 3 minutes to switch again and sitting there waiting is the worst.

I have pretty much done it all. To combat this, I have resolved to not use my device(s) in the car at all. That has been one of my less successful resolutions, however. The most common thing that happens to me is that I will completely miss a turn because I am talking on the phone. I still maintain that a hands free device of whatever kind is not the problem with using communication devices behind the wheel. It is the lack of focus on driving. Sure wish I could practice what I preach...

I've attempted to text message my wife while driving. This resulted in more than a little driving in the dirt. NOT a good idea.

Fumbling to get the phone out of my holster while driving comes in a very close second so a vehicle mount is a very good idea.

Sooo... would playing games while at church count?

I have a nasty habit of using mobiluck in theatres to send people bluetooth requests... it makes thier phone go off if they haven't silenced it and then everyone around them gives them evil looks. ;)

Forgetting the phone is on my lap while driving, and then getting out the car. The phone flies out the door, but it is protected, so far in its case.

I too have a nasty habit of texting and emailing while driving. I cannot WAIT for a PROPER voice activated device that can dictate perfectly, then respond to commands with equal perfection in a seamless manner. For instance, I want to be able to dictate an email and send it all with my voice, and it NOT make any mistakes!

Trying to type out an SMS while on the subway, with both, hands while the train is moving. Listen here: trains move, jolt, stop, make sharp turns..

but Treos are just so darn useful I keep forgetting and I've almost fallen several times, each time having made enough of a scene swinging my arms around that I'll forever be embarrassed.

I admit that I'm as commonly flawed as any other smartphone addict. You know... texting while driving, web searching while driving, downloading programs onto my Treo while I'm at work, asking my boss help me fix my retractable sync cable that unwound, affixing my Treo on my work desk to watch Slingbox since they've firewalled remote access... but recently I've reached an all time low. My gf has a serious issue with internet porn and has banished all my home computers of it. My last resort? You guessed it. Thank God for TCPMP.

I tend to jump on my treo in the middle of important meetings that i have to attend but not participate in. I think I've gotten pretty good and looking like i'm checking the email while just playing solitare.

I've done the text while driving bit multiple times. Not good. It's amazing how texting seems pull the car into the next lane no matter how straight you think you're going.

Almost lost in the toilet once, too, while ..... you don't really want to know.

I routinely surf the web on my phone while walking my dog. Too bad she's not trained as a seeing eye dog!

Don't have a Smartphone yet..I will have one but don't have one now so I wouldn't know.

I am a good and responsible driver ;) So I dont use my Axim to in car except listening to podcasts. I plug it in before I start driving :) But I am planning to use it for GPS, driving directions and I would love this mount.

Ravi.
