More Details on Future Versions of Windows Mobile Emerge

While it's clear that there's still plenty under wraps, we are seeing more details about Windows Mobile showing up today.

So, what's the gist of what's coming down through Microsoft's pipe? Everyone knows that Windows Mobile 6.1 is coming through the tubes, and that it's a relatively small update. It does some stuff that will be awesome (threaded messaging, for example), but beyond that and a few minor key tweaks, nothing fundamentally significant will change for the people using it.

For the next version after that, Microsoft is going to pare down their desktop version of Internet Explorer and stick it into Windows Mobile. Core apps like Office, Outlook Mobile, Windows Media, photos, etc. will all be re-vamped (re-imagineered?) so as to be easier to use. It sounds like the tweaks will be subtle enough that it won't freak out long-term users but still deliver some good, solid UI improvement payoff.

The next version of Windows Mobile after that last version of Windows Mobile is going to get the crazy redesigns, fully integrated search love, and should be able to present information to you based on your context. For example, while you're on the phone with someone the screen shows you their card in your address book, or a driving map to where they are, or the meetings you have with them in the next 2 weeks, or the next 20 emails you're going to send to this person. Microsoft will no longer optimize Windows Mobile for styli at this point, unless you think of your index finger as a stylus.

At this point, with 6.1 and then the next and then this version of Windows Mobile getting rumored, I don't know where to put the codeword "Photon." My guess is that it applies to all of them and none of them. Might be time to retire that particular codeword.

At the recent CTIA conference, Ballmer was asked about the Zune phone. As usual, he dodged the question, but said that they'd probably roll achievements from the Zune into Windows Mobile. As to which version of Windows Mobile will get those improvements, we've got no answer yet. Unofficially, it sounds like piecewise into both of the next big versions. At any rate, we know it's coming someday.

Boy Genius' WiFi Q9 Reveals Windows Mobile 6.1

Picture 3-10

As was foretold at this site in October, so it has come to pass. The surprise Motorola Q9 with WiFi that the Boy Genius recently got his hands on has turned out to be more surprising than anybody expected: it's loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1.

BGR is down for the count at the moment, but when they return this page should give you a 100 picture gallery of WM6.1. Engadget managed to snag the above screenshot before the traffic laid waste to everybody's favorite spoiler. BGR's RSS feed provides some additional info:

  • Copy / Paste (finally!)
  • Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)
  • New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)
  • Change Master Security Code
  • Added text input settings
  • Recent Programs when pressing Start menu
  • Threaded SMS!
  • When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the “To:” field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional!

Nifty Webcam Software

Joel Johnson found a really creative application for Windows Mobile -- turning your phone into your webcam while you charge your phone is a pretty hot idea. Mobiola seems expensive to me at $15, but then again, so does their competition. Extra bonus feature: Mobiola can be your Bluetooth webcam too. If one can't have fun with a mobile bluetooth webcam, maybe one can't have fun.

Motorola CEO Ed Zander: QUITR

Ed Zander wearing some RAZRWIRE glasses

p>Ed Zander will be stepping down as CEO of MOTROLA. He'll be replaced next month by GRG BRWN, who is currently the COO and PRSDNT. ZNDR will stay on the BORD for a few MNTHS after his RZIGNASHN. The money quote:

"Next year marks my 40th year in the technology industry. This is the right time for me to move on to the next phase in my life and spend more time with my money."

At this point I'd like to raise the possibility that I may have misquoted him. I've purchased 2 RAZRs -- they were great phones with cruddy software. If the software would have been great on those RAZRs, I'd have not jumped ship to their competitor's featurephones and I would have strongly considered a MOTO smartphone. Because of that bad software experience (and everything I read about their Q), I just blindly assume that their software sucks now. I hear some positive things about the new Q that has 3 letters -- QRS? QZX? Not enough good things to want one or to listen attentively when someone adamantly insists that they've gotten better.

Google Officially Bidding on 700MHz Spectra

Google is officially entering the 700 MHz fray. I know Dieter likes talking about wireless net neutrality -- I'm more or less on board with all of it, but I'll just post the news, as I imagine this is something he'll want to cover when he gets back from Mobius.

Replace Missing Sync with SyncMate?

It looks like there's a new contender for syncing Windows Mobile phones to Macs. The latest software from Eltima, called SyncMate, will do all the fundamental desktop syncing tasks for the low, low price of $0 American. SyncMate is a version 1.0 product, with the practically-necessary-nowadays "Beta" tag after its name. It requires Windows Mobile 5 or 6, and a Mac with OSX 10.4 or later.

Though I've long lobbied for the use of a Windows Mobile phone to actually test stuff like this before I report in Dieter's absence, success eludes me. I don't know if this will work with Palm's "secret recipe" threaded text messages on the Treo 750, or really if this will work at all, caveat emptor. [via]

[editor's note: Dieter's leaving a jet plane for NYC today, Any breaking news today will probably have to come from me, Mike Overbo of diametrically-opposed evil twin sibling smelly-iPhone-centric site Phone Different.]

Amazon has launched a beta of their MP3 store. This store will probably actually make its own stand, as opposed most of the other online stores that try to compete with iTunes that end up as also-rans. Case in point, Virgin's online store just closed down. Exactly how Amazon got EMI and UMG to kowtow to the MP3 format is beyond me, but they got them to do it. Here's the sweet and low-down:

  • Top 100 songs: $.89 (unless otherwise noted)
  • Top 100 albums: $8.99 or less (unless marked otherwise)
  • Other songs: Usually $.99
  • Other albums: all over the place. Under $4.99 to $11.99
  • Bit rate: 256kbps, mostly variable bit rate (VBR)
  • Song Encoding: MP3
  • DRM: none
  • Album Art: yes
  • Transferrable license of music: no
  • Big labels present: Universal Music Group, EMI
  • Big labels absent: Warner, Sony BMG
  • Indie labels: about 20,000 of 'em
  • # of Songs that AmazonMP3 has: 2 million
  • # of Songs that iTunes has: 6 million
  • Works with Macs: yes
  • Works with PCs: yes
  • Works with Linux: single songs only, no albums. Album downloader application in the works.

Interestingly, the current #1 song is, natch, 1234 by Feist. You know, the gal from the new iPod Nano commercial. #1 Artist? The Apples in Stereo.

Octopus and Sushi DO Have a Point

So, it's not uncommon knowledge that Symbian has around 70% of the world smartphone market, nor is it uncommon knowledge that smartphones in Japan tend to be more advanced than what we use stateside, and they tend to have more functionality. This would probably bother Americans, save for the fact that Symbian enjoys approximately a 0% share of the US market and generally no one has heard of it -- the Nokia E62 is the only notable Symbian phone to come to a US carrier in ages (AT&T), and even then it's pretty well under the radar (it's worth noting that the Symbian powered E62 is about the same functionality-wise as your standard Windows Mobile phone).

So Symbian started up a marketing website called Boo Hoo for You, where you can learn about Symbian and watch a crazy Japanese-style animation where you can learn details about Japanese Symbian phones from an, uh, adorable piece of sushi and an equally, um, adorable octoplegic octopus. I mean, naturally, right? What else? (again, it's worth noting that the E62 does more or less none of what's listed as features)

p> Dieter and I commented about the earlier Palm Flash ad site we thought was bad in our podcast. This one is worse. Waaay worse. Which probably means it will win the Nobel prize for bad flash ad sites. Check out the video for proof. If somehow you're not convinced after that, there's naturally two bad ringtones to seal the deal. [via Engadget]

Note To Self

Do not mess with Engadget. The popular tech doodad site posted a email note, apparently sent from Apple servers, saying that the iPhone would be delayed 4 months and Leopard another 3. Naturally, Apple's stock tanked to the tune of a market cap of $4 billion. Apple hastily notified Engadget of the error, Engadget posted an update, and the market corrected itself, leaving Apple with a cap loss of only $1.25 billion. There's a Mastercard commercial joke in there somewhere, but I'm pretty sure the punchline is '$1.25 billion' instead of 'priceless.'

I will be temporarily posting for Dieter while he moves this week. It's reasonable to expect that the site will suffer and nothing good will come of it. Things should get better on Monday when he returns.
