Windows Phone 7 Series to support HVGA screens

In terms of Windows Phone 7 Series news, this week’s Game Developer Conference (GDC) has been a warm up for the main event at MIX next week. We’ve seen Microsoft release XNA Game Studio 4, which can be used to develop games for 7 Series devices. We also got a chance to talk with Loke Uei of Microsoft about development for 7. (By the way, if you haven’t seen them yet, Engadget got their hands on some screen shots from a couple of prototype games that the Windows Phone team has been showing off.)

The latest bit of news from Shawn Hargreaves of the Windows Phone 7 Series development team comes from a post on his blog about XNA Game Studio and Windows Phone. Much of the post is talking about capabilities that developers can expect to be able to utilize. Shawn does mention that 7 Series devices will ship with WVGA (800x480) displays at launch, but a future update will add support for HVGA (320x480) displays. Hopefully this will lead to a lower starting price point for Windows Phones without compromising too much on quality.

Microsoft Releases XNA Game Studio 4.0, Support for Windows Phone 7 Series

Posted on Tuesday, Mar 9, 2010 by Tim Ferrill

Windows Phone 7 Series at GDC

Microsoft is obviously making a massive commitment to Windows Phone 7 Series on a number of different fronts, as we saw announced at Mobile World Congress.

XNA Game Studio 4.0 is the latest iteration of Microsoft’s developer tool set for Windows PCs, Xbox 360 and Zune. With Version 4, XNA Game Studio gains support for Windows Phone 7 Series, but nixes support for the Zune HD. XNA and Silverlight are the two major new development platforms (new to Windows Phones, anyway) that we will be seeing a lot of going forward, and the two platforms are being discussed in-depth at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this week and MIX10 next week. (Look for more from us on that front from TiPB's Rene Ritchie.)

What this means for Windows Phones is that we can expect 3D gaming to be the rule, not the exception. Yeah, I know, you’ve heard that before; but between the high level minimum specifications mandated by Microsoft’s reference chassis, Xbox Live integration and the introduction of XNA Game Studio 4 early enough that developers can get a jump on the Holiday 2010 release of Windows Phone 7 Series I would say that this is pretty much a sure thing.

Throwing that much firepower at the gaming segment makes you wonder if  Microsoft is not just targeting the iPhone/Android market, but also homing in on the PSP/Nintendo DS segment. If Microsoft is able to get similar 3D performance from a Windows Phone as competing mobile gaming consoles, it would have a major leg up because of the media playback and connectivity with other Microsoft services. One thing is for sure: It’s a good time to be a Windows Phone user. [via ZDNet]

Microsoft Demos Xbox Live game on Windows Phone 7 Series

Windows Phone Gaming - Courtesy of Engadget

So at this point we’ve seen the Gamer Tag features and other bits and pieces of what you can do with Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 Series devices, but the party line on what to expect with real gaming has been consistent; stay tuned for MIX.

At the TechEd Middle East event, Microsoft’s Eric Rudder had the opportunity to demonstrate what we can expect of games that have a foot in multiple worlds; console, PC, and mobile. Rudder’s demo showed the same game (Indiana Jones) being played on multiple platforms. The Windows Phone 7 Series device utilized an accelerometer to control the movement and a tap on the screen to jump.

This type of scenario fits in perfectly with Microsoft’s “three screens and a cloud” approach to life, the universe, and everything. The ability to begin one game and have it continue seamlessly on another device would be a real coup for a company that has a much broader footprint in the services world than any other company in the smartphone business.

Video of the demo is after the break.

Review: Mobi Products Touch Screen Stylus Pen

Mobihand Stylus - Full View

We Windows Mobile faithful tend to be the butt of jokes every now and then due to the fact that our flavor of Smartphone isn’t as finger friendly as some of the competition. The truth is, the stylus is one of the most versatile and easy to use input methods available on a mobile platform. I’m not saying that a stylus is a must have piece of hardware, but it is a tried and true solution.

Mobi Products makes a number of accessories for Windows Mobile devices. Their Touch Screen Stylus Pen is a step up for those out there who are still stylus dependent.

The full review is after the link.

Opera Mini 5 Beta Announced as Native WinMo App

Opera Mini 5 Beta

Browsing the Internet is one of those things that can be a major draw for people looking to purchase a smartphone, but can be rather hit or miss due to the lack of quality mobile web browsers. For my money, having a choice between which browser you use in different situations can be a deal breaker. Luckily, Windows Mobile has more browser choices than many of its competitors.

Opera has been in the mobile browser game as long as anyone and their browsers are among the best. Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 is the latest and greatest from Opera’s Mini product. Traditionally a Java based application; Opera announced today that Opera Mini 5 is available as a native Windows Mobile application. There are technical reasons why having a native application is preferable over a Java based version. The bottom line is that a native Windows Mobile application should offer better performance, stability, and compatibility across a large array of devices.

My first impression with Opera Mini 5 is that it is FAST, though the rendering engine isn’t perfect. Mini 5 uses server side rendering; meaning that when you request a web page, a server somewhere actually downloads the files and formats it and compresses it before sending it along to your device. This method keeps your data usage to a minimum and doesn’t require as much processing power on your device. The Mini 5 UI is also very similar to what we’ve been playing with on the Opera Mobile 10 betas, which I consider a very clean and usable interface.

More information on the features you can expect from Opera Mini are available from Opera’s site. To download the application, point your mobile browser to http://m.opera.com/next/mini.

Google Sync Down Again

 Google

For those of you syncing your Gmail and such using Google Sync, you’ve probably noticed that it hasn’t been feeling like itself the last couple days (not the first time). According to Google’s Mobile Help Forum, the issue stems from an extended problem with one of Google’s datacenters.

This problem only affects users running Google Sync, meaning a manual update should allow you to reach your data just fine. It’s also worth noting that this only seems to be a problem for Windows Mobile, iPhone, and S60 devices. Also those of you using a third party tool such as the SEVEN Beta, PushEffect, or XImapPusher to get your Gmail should be immune.

LG Windows Phone 7 Series Prototype Fondled on The Engadget Show

Posted on Saturday, Feb 27, 2010 by Tim Ferrill

LG Windows Phone 7 Series prototype

Ever since Microsoft showed off Windows Phone 7 Series at Mobile World Congress, one of the major questions has been what kind of hardware can we expect from the device manufacturers. All we saw in Barcelona was a developer device.

But today on The Engadget Show, Microsoft’s Aaron Woodman brought a new toy. It was a prototype LG device, with the Windows Phone 7 Series OS, a sliding QWERTY keyboard -- which was a bit of a surprise -- all of the hardware buttons that we’ve been told to expect, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Let's reiterate that this was a prototype, and we'd kind of like to see a production unit with a little more sophistication. An new OS of this caliber deserves something that at least looks like more than the hardware the old Windows Mobile (sorry, but it is) runs on.

Oh, and the fact that Paul and Nilay posted their hands-on with the LG device as The Engadget Show was taping live was more than a little sick. [Engadget]

Windows Phone Starter edition is officially official

Posted on Friday, Feb 26, 2010 by Tim Ferrill

Windows Phone Starter Edition

Rumors have been floating since the big Windows Phone 7 Series announcement at Mobile World Congress that Microsoft would be offering a "Starter Edition" of Windows Mobile 6 aimed at least partially at emerging markets (see the original announcement by Bsquare). Up to this point all information on Starter Edition has been coming from "sources familiar with the matter." But Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet was able to coax a Microsoft mobile spokesperson into answering some questions.

Some quick details about Windows Phone 6 Starter edition:

  • Will be offered in multi-language versions
  • Versions with and without Microsoft Office Mobile will be offered. (Office Mobile 2010 will be made available to OEMs when it ships.)
  • Supports 2G (GSM), 2.5G (CDMA2000 xRTT, EDGE, GPRS), CDMA (Rev A, EV-DO Revision A), and TD-SCDMA radios. Engadget postulates that the conspicuous absence of HSDPA 3G is an attempt to encourage adoption of Windows Phone 7 Series devices internationally where 3G networks are substantial enough.

What are your thoughts on Starter Edition? [via ZDNet]

Review: Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard

Posted on Friday, Feb 19, 2010 by Tim Ferrill

Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard

In this never ending quest to find the ultimate mobile device that meets all of our needs while still being portable enough to still be considered a mobile device, one feature that is constantly mentioned as a weak link is the size (or complete lack) of the hardware keyboard. While many people (myself included) hate on the lack of hardware keyboards in different devices, the truth is that it is purely a matter of preference. Obviously though, no software keyboard (or mobile phone based hardware keyboard) can duplicate the usability of a full sized keyboard.

We’ve played with a number of Freedom’s products on this site. Though everything from Keychain GPS receivers to portable Battery Chargers are available from Freedom, their line of Bluetooth Keyboards is their primary niche. The Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard could be considered Freedom’s flagship product. The keyboard folds in half to make it as portable as possible while still giving you as much keyboard real estate as possible.

Hit the jump for my thoughts.
