A fond farewell for Avantgo

Avantgo has been around for as long as I can remember, and hadn't thought much about the mobile application until we received a tip that Sybase Inc. (the parent company) was closing the doors on the service at the end of the month.

From the early PDA years to the days of the Smartphone. It spanned Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian and RIM operating systems showing no favorites, offering access to websites offline. It was the perfect solution during the time where data plans were limited or priced beyond most means to take your favorite website with you. It was the pre-cursor to RSS readers.

According to Avantgo.com;

"After June 30, 2009, AvantGo will no longer be providing mobile Web content for sync or online access, and you will not be able to access or update your AvantGo content or account."

We were asked if an alternative was out there that could replace Avantgo and the only thing that came to mind was Viigo. I imagine with data plans becoming more economical and unlimited, most find it easier to simply go to the URL of the website on their browser or rely more on RSS readers to stay tuned to current events.

Avantgo will go the way of the floppy disk and serial port; a valuable tool that played a key role in the technology's development only to give way to improvements that were built upon the foundation it created.  Admittedly, I haven't accessed my Avantgo account in ages but now that the end is near, I may update my channels one last time for old times sake.

This was the program that first got me into newsreading and RSS on my old Dell Axim x30, many moons ago... Sad to see it go, but there really isn't a place for this sort of thing anymore, what with EVDO and HSDPA now almost standard WinMob equipment.

Avantgo on my palm V was the best. I haven't accessed the account since I got my palm 650 (3 smartphones ago) but I have fond memories. Thanks Avantgo.

Since I don't have the spare $$$ to pay for a data service, the Avantgo service was my only RSS reader for my Palm Centro. Anyone have a suggestion for a good replacement?

Seconds after I was explaining to someone how some “instant experts” often pop up in electronic forums to give wrong or nonsensical answers to serious inquiries, I looked up at my laptop screen and was amazed to see one ignorant user’s example right here. I’ve also been using Avantgo for about 10 years (with one of the first Palm III’s), and I’m sorry to see it go. EVDO and HSDPA sure won’t do us any good in the subway or in an airplane, or while traveling in a foreign country with a smartphone PDA with the wireless radio turned off (i.e. CDMA smartphone in a GSM country). Those of us who are truly mobile understand the importance of having some PDA content available while beyond the reaches of realtime internet connectivity.

I will truly miss reading CNet News on my Dell Axim x51V. I've spent the past four hours searching for a replacement program. I started using Avantgo with my Sony Clie about eight years ago and have used it just about everyday since then.

I loved it for Bbspot, Palmjokes and Sproule cartoons and many others. I will miss it a lot.

A good alternative to AvantGo is to use RSS feeds with an RSS feed reader. Try the program QuickNew from Stand Alone, which works on the Palm OS:

http://standalone.com/palmos/quick_news/

With it you can download updates to RSS feeds while home and attached to your home network and the web. Then you can read them off-line later while traveling or just idle somewhere--and don't have to have those obnoxious graphics and advertisements.

This was the real value of AvantGo, wasn't it? To be able to read articles in text form from anywhere. The only real use I have for my old Palm handheld is to do this. Everything else it can do, I either don't want to do with my Palm, or can do it better with my mobile phone, or would rather do on my home computer. So, I'm pleased to have found this alternative.
