Ballmer takes the WinMo numbers game

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer

It's easy for us to forget that smartphones are, first and foremost, a business. We (and you) certainly love our devices. Good thing we have Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer around to remind us it's really all about the numbers.

Gizmodo recently had a sit-down with the boss and grilled him on Windows Mobile 6.5. We mostly got the standard, partner-pleasing lines:

"I think there's a lot of great Windows phones out there now, coming to market now, based upon Windows Mobile 6.5. ..."

On 6.5 not really being up to snuff:

"I think Windows Mobile 6.5 enables a new generation of exciting Windows phones. That's what I believe. Reviews aside, that's what I believe."

On the future:

"Will there be a next release? Sure. And a release after that? Sure. And a release after that? Sure. There will always be new releases."

And, those blessed numbers:

"It's kind of a horse race right now. It's not like any one of the phones, at least on a unit volume, ah, perspective, has distinguished itself from the others -- except Nokia."

Not that we expected much more from the boss, but, darn it, it'd be great to put the Kool-Aid down every now and then. Check out the video over at Giz, and be on the lookout for the full interview later.

hubris will blind one to reality.

a ceo is supposed to exhibit hubris. but hubris alone is an empty cup - it needs to be tempered by honesty. honesty creates the opportunity to focus on the real issues facing windows phones:

- meaningful windows phone branding
- ease of use
- cross application simplicity and integration

focus on that more and microsoft might see increasing marke share, rather than shrinking market share.

that's the reality.

Deeper than what most of us are used to reading, at least the first part, but you are exactly on point, my man. Especially considering the onslaught of Android devices which by all indications doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Ballmer really needs to shake things up to get results or expect to be well behind.

My personal ranking on smartphone OS 'mindshare':

1. iPhone OS
2. Android
3. WebOS
4. Blackberry OS (if only because of corporate businnesses and this won't change anytime soon)

5 and so on is irrelevant because the front runners that I have listed are all that the tech press and enthusiasts discuss with any genuine interest.

The first time I met Steve Ballmer was in 2000 at a briefing he gave in which the subject was how he viewed mobile devices as the future of Microsoft.

Nine years later I'd like to grab Steve Ballmer by the lapels and ask him "You owned the mobile market. What the F happened? Why are you now the Novell of Smartphones?"
