CDMA Treo Pro gets FCC Nod; has 1500mah battery

Just a few days after the unannounced CES sighting and a single, unexciting “spy shot” the Palm Treo Pro gets its FCC approval for CDMA. Of course we have a good idea that this is supposed to be hitting Sprint within the next 2 weeks, but with little fanfare as it lies within the wake of the Palm Pre.  The only thing we now know is this: it does have a 1500mah battery, which will be a welcomed improvment over the 1130mah of the Treo 800w.

What else is interesting about these FCC docs is the date:  Sept 12th. This is revealing for two reasons:
  1. Just weeks after the Treo 800w was released, the CDMA Treo Pro was finished and headed for the FCC
  2. Our earlier report (Sept 18th) where Palm said they had secured a deal with a carrier for the Pro
Putting on our "speculation hat", we’d say that the Treo Pro for Sprint was always in the works, whether or not the 800w was a success or not—that is this was a long term plan of Palm and Sprint. Of course had the 800w not been delayed from late 2007, this hardware-refresh would not look so premature.

The other interesting bit is that perhaps this was never planned for AT&T, who since has gone with the Samsung Epix, but rather it was Sprint all along.

So anyone actually excited about this?

Well, I would have been excited about this, had not the Pre been such an interesting device. I was all set to get a Treo Pro when it came up on Sprint, but now I think I'll wait. I would still get one if Sprint would let me get the discounts on the Pre in a few months (fat chance).

Makes sense to me. IMHO, the TP will probably sell far fewer devices now than it would have had last fall. I suspect there is still a market for it in business (at least I *think* there are still companies who use WM devices. Right? ;)), but for the majority of the individuals that buy these devices, we'll be waiting to see the Pre.

bubba, the key word is "individuals." Large buinesses and corporate accounts are very inertial about hoping on untested operating systems at the get go. The Pro will have a stong 6 month run.

Its main problem/drag is the same as the Pre -- Sprint. But Verizon, and actual strong business provider, will likely have a pre in three months so it has a good chance.

Darn excited I am!!

I need a phone now.. have a 700wx and it's falling apart.
Don't want an 800w, but the TP will do nicely.

And even though I am excited for the Pre I don't want a brand new OS w/o more support, for now.. so I will wait another yr and see how that is faring.

I agree businesses will prob be happy with the TP and I disagree but business is a major part of Sprint too, not just the evil that is Verizon. But that is a whole other rant!! ;-)
