Dear Verizon: Thanks for the GPS unlock, but you're not quite finished yet

Posted on Friday, Jul 10, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

Dear Verizon,

So here we are, halfway through the year and many moons removed from our open letter imploring you to unlock the GPS on your Windows Mobile phones. And in December 2008, you promised to do so in the first half of the year for the Samsung Omnia and Saga, and the HTC Touch Pro. And we rejoiced.

We're now a little past the midpoint of 2009, and indeed the Saga and Touch Pro have had their GPS chips released from the shackles of VZ Navigator, free to get turn-by-turn directions from the likes of Google Maps and Bing, among others. And for that, you have our thanks. While we're not quite ready to overlook you locking customers into (and having to pay for) VZ Navigator in the first place, it still means a lot in this crazy smartphone game when a company promises to do something and then follows through. So, thanks.

But while two out of three ain't bad, the job's not done. We can talk all night, but that ain't getting us nowhere. It's time to get the Omnia unlocked.  No more hacks. No more unofficial ROMs. Let's get that done so we can all turn our focus to some of the great new phones you have coming down the pike and go back to being one big, happy smartphone family.

We're still watching.

Love,

The WMExperts Team

Never did and never will like Verizon.

So I get why feature phone users are in love with "the network"...but is there any compelling reason to sign with Verizon in the smartphone space? T-Mobile for low cost, AT&T for 3g coverage, and sprint for speed/everything plan....does anyone give a crap about the size of Verizon's network as the only upside? They are the most expensive, the most restrictive, and for some reason don't get new phones until a year after everyone else...

tmobile--yes, cheap, plus android...but rotten coverage in many markets, lots of deadzones in the dallas metro area.

att-baloney on the 3g coverage, deadzones in my area, but not as bad as tmo or sprint, plus they cripple phones as well

sprint-rotten coverage

vzw-never had a deadzone, a bit slow to get new phones, but no us carrier is fast on this, same price as att (not more expensive), gps is getting uncrippled and new smartphones are not gps locked. sure, i want my omnia to have unlocked gps, but no biggy. I don't get lost!

As for coverage, if it doesn't work as a basic phone first, then all the bells and whistles are irrelevant.

while I am glad they unlocked the GPS on the Saga, in doing so they broke a few things:

Signal quality/service blows goats

They messed up SMS in all sorts of ways-we now have this SMS Retry program that is very annoying

And some people complain they broke PIE but I haven't used it.

Check on the following links for most of our thoughts:

And it appears that the GPS unlock hasn't worked for everyone.

You care about "the network" when you don't get service when you need it. Case in point, I was on travel to the east coast recently in upstate NY. My company provided BlackBerry didn't have service (via AT&T) but boy did my personal Verizon phone have "full bars" showing. Now, admittedly, my phone is three years old and I am waiting for them to start selling the HTC Touch Pro 2. So, I agree with you that Verizon has not been compelling in the Smartphone (Windows Mobile) space. If I can't get what I want, I WILL be switching to Sprint later this year.

Verizon will have the best lineup of Windows Mobile phones out of any US carrier by the end of the year.

The Ozone (Best of class Snap for only $49.99) is only the beginning of a renewed commitment to Windows.

Just wait until you see the VZW Touch Pro2... I wish I could say more, but have faith that there is finally reason for WinMo fans to get excited about Verizon.

Uh guys, GPS does not require the use of VZ Navigator on the Ozone.

Best consumer-model smartphone ever, BTW.

To be honest YES, I do love Verizon for the network I mean without a good network your phone is nothing more than a paperweight. Sure you might have some "games" which are more than just novelty but if your coverage sucks ahem AT&T then why be with that network. I think over the next year and a half will be a big change for Verizon both in the way of getting better phones but when they finish upgrading to their LTE network before the other 2 major companies (I exclude sprint because they will be gone within that time period) I think you'll see they have the upper hand.
