Expect fewer phone models with Windows Mobile

Yep, you read that right. Microsoft apparently is planning to scale back the number of devices it puts Windows Mobile on. And this really isn't that surprising and almost definitely is a move in the right direction.

The New York Times reports that Microsoft is planning a "major announcement" next month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, so we'll likely get more details then. For now, here's what Todd Peters, VP of Marketing for Windows Mobile, told the Gray Lady.

The reason that Microsoft is limiting the number of phones with the operating system is because, he said, the company does not want to have its efforts diluted over too many devices.

“I’d rather have fewer devices and be more focused,” he said. That way “we get better integration” between phone and operating system.

This really makes sense to us. We've ranted talked about how AT&T in particular has too many Windows Mobile phones to pick from, and the NYT story spells it out — there are 140 phones that currently run Windows Mobile. There is, in fact, too much of a good thing. Concentrating on a smaller number of outstanding devices definitely should be better in the long run for the platform, and for Microsoft in general. Sure worked out well for these guys.

I'm surprised it took them this long to figure that out, I like choice as much as the next person but at this point it seems like the multitude of devices that are out there are actually hindering the growth of windows mobile cause it's just entirely too much choice. People dunno what to go with, which device does what etc..etc and people shy away from that cause the choices seem way too "complicated" and "confusing" with all variables of options.

Although I like the thought of focusing on fewer devices, I just hope it doesn't come to a point where all WM devices must have form factor XYZ. If it ever comes to a point where all WM devices become clones as far as form factor is concerned I will be very disappointed.

While I think that this can be a good thing for the growth of WinMo, I worry that it could go to far. What works for me, may not be what someone else wants. PDA's were always an excellent example of this, as some needed/wanted huge screens and special I/O ports...

The iPhone form factor sucks, and I would hate being limited to that, even with WinMo.

There are 4 basic form factors for mobile phones: vertical and horizontal sliders, candy bar, all touch, and clam shell for factors. Microsoft could pair down the number of devices to 10 or 20 all still have all of the form factors covered. It also wouldn't hurt to set some baseline spec standards (screen resolution, processor speed, memory, etc).

What really makes me nervous is whether or not Windows Mobile Standard will live on. I guess we'll find out this month.

i totally agree.

- tighten up the device hardware specifications.
- perhaps guide manufacturers to each focus on a different form factor, or concentrate on one form factor at a time for all manufacturers.

addiotionally, i suggest ms use apple's example, and be more demanding with carriers about what applications are added and features that get turned off.

i also fear winmo standard will get left behind. that would be a pitty. i personally think it is a more stable and phone friendly option. the new pre looks like a form factor i was expecting samsung to release in the usa.

Isn't this how Windows Mobile got started, with Microsoft requiring certain specs for Windows Mobile (back then CE) devices? If I remember right, the specs were so demanding that only a few could meet MS's demands and Palm OS blew past them.

I agree that it's a step in the right direction and like that Microsoft is tightening the reigns but they need to be careful not to pull them in too tight. I'm eagerly waiting the HTC S743 and the Mobinnova ICE as well as what surprises are in store for the Mobile World Congress.

After Palm's impressive unveiling of the Palm Pre, Microsoft needs to make a big splash in Barcelona. They have all the ingredients with both WM Standard and Pro as well as some quality devices in the development pipe. All they need to do is put them in a pot, stir, and simmer.

I totally disagree with this. Why should MS prevent Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Palm, and every other mfg from developing as many form factors as they choose? Let the customer and mfg's decide what the market wants.

MS should stop worrying about this type of stuff and start worrying about releasing an OS that isnt crap. No support for capacitive screens? HTC is making millions simply by putting make up on Winmo's zits. Pocket IE? Are you kidding me???? BB, Apple and now Palm are kicking MS's arse and thier worried about too many phones?

Wake up Steve!!!
