Former Microsoft VP tells how internal conflicts have stifled innovative products

We've talked numerous times about Microsoft's apparently inability -- particularly with Windows Mobile -- to integrate what by themselves may be outstanding services. WinMo and Zune haven't played together (though we know that's changing). It's SkyDrive and Live Mesh services overlap but for the most part have nothing to do with each other, and they certainly don't integrate. The list goes on.

Dick BrassAnd that was one of the bigger criticisms we heard during the recent third annual Smartphone Round Robin, as we highlighted in our wrap-up. But you don't have to take our word for it. Former Microsoft vice president Dick Brass, who was with Microsoft from 1997 to 2004, explains things in today's Op-Ed section of the New York Times. An excerpt:

Internal competition is common at great companies. It can be wisely encouraged to force ideas to compete. The problem comes when the competition becomes uncontrolled and destructive. At Microsoft, it has created a dysfunctional corporate culture in which the big established groups are allowed to prey upon emerging teams, belittle their efforts, compete unfairly against them for resources, and over time hector them out of existence.

Ouch. We can only hope that things have begun to turn around. [Microsoft's Creative Destruction]

Update: Microsoft responds here to Brass' column.

microsoft has never been an inovative company, even the orignal DOS was bought from somebody else. whenever they have wanted to move into a new area they went out and bought it from somebody else. With that kind of past it is not suprising that they eat thier own offspring.

Thank you for posting this.

I have to say this guy left 6 years ago and makes an interesting point for the time he left MS. Since he left MS 6 years ago, hopefully they made some changes to be more competitive. There is potential inside MS to be great but the fact that they make soo many mistakes is what makes them interesting to watch.

It's ignorant to say Microsoft hsd never innovated, and then trot out DOS and Windows. Microsoft began writing Basic interpreters when personal computing was in its infancy - they could claim with more than a little justification to have "innovated" the software industry as we know it. And while they have a definite strategy of buying an existing product to get a foothold in a new market, those products very quickly evolve beyond recognition (*usually* for the better) in subsequent iterations. I'm not arguing against the premise of the article (which I think is largely correct), only against lazily repeating slogans invented by people who frankly don't know what they're talking about.

This just saddens me. To think of where tablets or e-readers would be if they had done them 10 years ago, just sucks. To think they have idiots like that running divisions is angering. We could have such cool products out there if they worked together. Too much pride, too much laziness to cooperate.

Firstly, sounds like sour grapes, but he does have a couple good points. I know folks at MS and it can be cut-throat at times.

i noticed that Interprit is hosting a survey on the newest post. Doesn't anyone worry about Gartenberg's involvement with Engadget and GDG? There seems to be a strong Apple pedigree all around the folks involved. hmm

What ever it may be, whether they bought it from someone else or they do it by their own they are the pioneer if the IT industry. Microsoft has bring a revolution and because of them only we are able to use such user friendly operating system.
