Will Google Voice do in Microsoft's My Phone?

Posted on Friday, Mar 20, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

When we learned of GrandCentral's relaunch as Google Voice, one of our first thoughts was, "Uh, oh. The carriers aren't going to be happy about this."

But let's turn a little closer to home, shall we? What about Microsoft's fledgling My Phone service, which currently is in beta testing. Yeah. Feel the light bulb click on.

Quick review: My Phone syncs your phone's contacts, text messages, calendar appointments, tasks, photos, videos, music and documents to the Microsoft cloud. They're then available on the Web. You can also go from the Web back to your phone. Contacts and calendar sync require use of your one Exchange ActiveSync connection.

Google Voice? Save for not syncing photos, music and documents, it's got My Phone beat across the board. Check out our previous post for everything that's coming. But it's not a sync service. It just is. All of your data [SMS, phone calls, voicemail] pings it first, then hits your phone. Yeah, you're going to have to give yourself up to The Google to take full advantage of Voice. Some of us already have sold our souls given in taken full advantage of the services Google offers. [Edit: If you're going to be using Google Voice, you're already going to have a lot of your PIM data in their cloud, right?]

And, at least for yours truly, here's the kicker: It'll be possible (with a little third-party help - thanks, Seven!) to totally enter the Google cloud and still have Exchange ActiveSync left over for business matters.

So what say you, fair readers? We realize it's not quite an apples-to-apples fight. But does the prospect of Google Voice on your device make My Phone a non-starter?

Myphone and Google voice are two completely different animals in my eyes.

If google voice works well, I may cancel my 3rd line of service (right now it's the "house" number).

huh? this isn't even a porkchop vs apples fit. totally different products with different goals. i mean, would you compare a f16 to a vw bug? i mean both are "transportation", but totally different. slow news day, huh?

It is a bit of a stretch, as we noted. But if you're using Google Voice, then you're using already way into the Google ecosystem and thus My Phone almost isn't needed at all, except to sync photos and such.

Nope. I don't live in the Google universe. Tempted at times, but too invested in what I have up and running and working. I was actually really happy with Dashwire except that it had no calendar sync (which they actually told me is coming soon, btw). My Phone is simplistic and pretty raw right now, but I get contacts, calendar, and other periphery stuff synced flawlessly. Hard to complain about that!

myphone is a good backup system... that's about it. Maybe MS will turn it into something that will compete with google voice.

Honestly, myPhone is great for a beta service but the 200 meg cap is too small. They need to combine it with Livemesh to really make it shine!

That's the truth. and the phone client of Live Mesh isn't as seemless as the desktop yet.

I'm lost in terms of how these two services compete, even in the slightest. There are really no similarities at all.

Google Voice just forwards incoming and outgoing calls and texts to their rightful destinations, along with the other features it offers. Unlike MyPhone, it does not sync anything at all... sure, you can import your contacts if you like, but you have to do it from a file on your computer-- your phone isn't even in the equation.

Come to think of it, having a MyPhone compatible phone gives you zero additional functionality with GV. GV will work exactly the same whether you are using a Touch Pro, a G1, or even some crappy pay-as-you-go phone. You don't even need a cell phone at all!

You also say, and I quote:

And, at least for yours truly, here's the kicker: It'll be possible (with a little third-party help - thanks, Seven!) to totally enter the Google cloud and still have Exchange ActiveSync left over for business matters.

This doesn't make much sense either. First of all, Seven has absolutely nothing to do with GV, and GV has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft Exchange. You seem to imply that for some reason the "Google cloud" (?) will dominate the exchange syncing capabilities of your phone, when in actuality, there is absolutely no way at all to use exchange with GV even if you tried... I don't even see the link between Seven and the "Google cloud" in the first place.

Again (and again, and again), yeah, this whole thing may be a bit of a stretch.

Re the Seven thing: I'm totally bass-ackwards syncing. Use Seven to push and sync gmail and contacts. Use Exchange for work e-mail and calendar (sync Google and work calendars with Google Calendar Sync). So in my twisted little world, it makes perfect sense. :P

Didn't mean to imply that Google Voice uses Exchange. But I wouldn't be able to use Google Sync for contacts and calendar and still hook into my work's Exchange server, so that's where Seven comes in.

So what's the point of all this? Just to generate a little discussion - and confusion, apparently. :)

=)

Ha! Your syncing network is amazing! And I didn't even know about Google Sync until now, so yes, it makes much more sense now! I still don't think it'll be much of a competition in the minds of most people, but I certainly see the connection now...

wow...must be a slow news week. because this is seriously an apples vs oranges comparison.

The comparison with My Phone is a non-starter. GV isn't a syncing service and My Phone currently doesn't offer voice services. Thats not say GV isn't a threat to Microsoft..I believe it is and Microsoft needs to think about it carefully. GV is a find me/whoisit/voicemail service. There are a number of providers for this type of service without the G brand.

If I was a Mobile Carrier, I would add "Follow-me", "Send to Email" features. These two features would minimize GV advantages.

Microsoft needs to realize that G will probably tie this to their Android phone. In addition, they could extend this in the future with PBX like Attendant features for business services. If I was Microsoft I would be get into this game...there is advertising revenue in bringing people back to Live Mail on a regular basis.

- Add Inbound call capability to Live Call/Live Messenger with a find me feature.
- Add a control panel in My Phone for Live Call where you can specify some basic rules.
- Add VoiceMail to Live Call and display these in Live Mail as a separate folder.
- and there are some advanced (paid) options I would also provide.

Microsoft may want to partner with J2 Communications with their PhonePeople.com and JConnect services.

I don't see how either service will make a difference to the other... In the same way that a new Ford hatch back is not really going to make a dent in the sails of aircraft carriers...

microsoft has onev.com

After the huge success of Gmail and some other services which Google launched in the past, i think it's going to be a big success just as well and as a proof you can see in this link that there are already client applications which integrates very easily with this service:
