HTC Leo = HTC Thoth = HTC Athena 2, Got It?

So all these rumors abuzz about the HTC Leo specs and a "clamshell phone" are a bit on the money and a bit off.

First, while technically a phone, it's more a long the lines of a Mobile Internet Device (MID) then smartphone.

Second, it's not replacing HTC Universal but rather the HTC Athena, which garnered a lot of attention but seemed more experimental than anything.

In short, the HTC Leo is the very same  HTC Thoth that was mentioned in the leaked HTC 2009 Roadmap. Making sense yet?

So what are the specs? What we know so far is

  • Manilla 2.5
  • WVGA/16:9 Screen/4.3"
  • Snapdragon/1GHz
  • 8MP Camera--NEW (up from 5MP?)
  • WM6.5
  • 320mb/512mb RAM/ROM

Look for it by the end of the year and judging by the numerous ROMs floating around, don't be surprised if a few carriers pick it up this time.

The specs look good, but the tiny battery looks like it will prevent it from being usable as a primary phone. The screen size also seems a bit big for a phone (I know, more of a mobile internet device). Still, they are getting closer to having everything that I'd like to see in a smartphone.

ERm this was speculated last week here : http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/07/21/htc-leofirestone-to-have-capac...

Speculation is great but I have internal confirmation ;-)

From what I've learned, HTC had an Athena 2 in the works until mid-2008 (the January 2009 roadmap was outdated, you know). But it's been cancelled along the way.

To prove my theory, grap this piece of information: Profile of Athena 2 (Thoth)

But don't tell anyone, eh?

The question for me is "can if be used like a phone?" The dealbreaker with the Athena was that I couldn't put it to my face and make a call. If they fixed that problem, Toshiba tg01 be damned.

Clamshell with 8mp camera and Snapdragon? oooo...can't wait to hear more about this one!

Please give us a CDMA version for Sprint -- I don't want to be stuck with another crappy Qualcomm like the TP2.

This will be the Only phone that I will buy. After years with HTC Athena, I can't possibly revert back to any sub-4-inch screen machine, just impossible to live with even a 4inch screen Toshiba T01 after years of 5-incher indulgence. Big screen is poisonous in this sense. But really hope that I can speak into the machine this time with the new design, instead of fully relying on a bluetooth headset to make calls. R u listening HTC??!! I want to speak into it!!
