HTC S743: Breaking Ranks

With recent Windows Mobile Professional releases from HTC such as the Touch Pro/Fuze, Touch Diamond and Touch HD it may come as a surprise that HTC's next U.S. release will be a Windows Mobile Standard device. Enter stage left, the HTC S743.

The HTC s743 is a non-touch screen device with a 12-key front keypad AND a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It is similar to the European S740 but supports the U.S. 3G networks. Fitted with a 2.4" QVGA display the S743 measures 4.58" x 1.71" x .65" and weighs respectfully light 4.94 ounces.

While we were asking a little while ago "Where has Windows Mobile Standard gone?", it appears HTC has given WM Standard a healthy breath of fresh air with the S743. It is anticipated that the S743 will use the same speedy processor of the S740 (the Qualcomm MSM7225 528Mhz) along with the other standard features Windows Mobile users have come to enjoy (Wi-fi, bluetooth, GPS, etc.) as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera and FM reciever.

The S743 is expected to hit the U.S. market during the first quarter of 2009 and be available through select retail outlets such as dell.com and cdw.com.

HTC plans on having the S743 on display at CES 2009 and we will be able to give you a more hands-on opinion of this new phone.  For the time being however, based on the specs, WM Standard's future looks bright with the HTC S743.

Blackjack/MotoQ9 killer for WM standard supremacy?

I've loved this phone from the first time I saw it. But if I was to buy it the first thing I'd do is go looking for some custom firmware, cause HTC is really bad at doing rotation in Windows Mobile.

Actually, snow, I have the s740 and the screen rotation is the fastest of any WinMo device I've used.

Honestly, HTC knocked it out of the park with this phone - too ba it's a slider instead of a one-handed qwerty. Also too bad: that carriers only care about touchscreens nowadays.

That's good to hear Dieter, 'cause normally HTC seems to put very little effort into getting their devices to rotate quickly. My Tilt was super slow at rotation until I started using a custom rom from one of the dudes over at XDA.

I think why I like Windows Mobile Standard is the fact that it doesn't do the drop down start menu thing, which to me just makes little sense....just seems better and faster to just open the programs folder like what Standard does.

Think the screen rotation is faster because it's WinMo Standard? Or are they just getting better at it overall?

That's a good question. I've never used a Standard device that did rotation so I have no clue myself if Standard is generally better at rotation than Pro.

I hope they find it in their hearts to release a CDMA on Verizon.

@Snowman I think Dieter will tell us that Standard is better at everything. Except maybe touchscreen integration. :)

WM standard kicks ass (previous and very proud owner of T-mobile DASH)
with this CPU this phone will blow away any other non touch screen smart phone
