T-Mobile Touch Pro 2

Today's the day, folks. It's finally here. The first Touch Pro 2 has been released on a U.S. carrier (it's in stores, and you can find it online), and the fine folks at T-Mobile have the honors. Of course, T-Mo also has the dubious distinction of having a TP2 without a 3.5mm headphone jack, and we now know that the official price is $349 after a two-year contract. But them's the breaks.

Reviews are in from the usual suspects (Nokia Experts and ZDNet regular Matt Miller; Engadget; Gizmodo). But we're gonna be in the trenches with you folks today to see what the fuss is all about. And we're going to do it together. So as you pick up a T-Mo Touch Pro 2 today and in the coming days, send pics of your plunder to phil.nickinson at wmexperts dot com, and we'll post up them for all to see.

See ya in the store!

just ordered mine from wirefly for 199...with a two year upgrade it was 230 but i wanted a new phone number and next day shipping is only 19.99 and two day is 7.99 so i think its worth the two day wait and save a crap load of money that you can spend on i ono an invisible shield...car charger...something for you car...food... well the list is endless but yea if you dont have to have it this second then wirefly is the way to go :)

OH DID YOU REALLY ORDER IT FROM WIREFLY. THAT SEEMS PRETTY DIFFICULT TO DO SEEING HOW ITS NOT SHOWN ON THEIR WEBSITE

SORRY IT THERE YO HAVE TO DIG DEEP

Yes,Wirefly.com does have them for $199. You have to look under T-mobile and it's listed as a new activation. That's a lot better than $350.00 T-mobile is asking for at their website.

It's $229.99 if you want to upgrade with a 2yr ext.

i'm not ugradn nuthin u guys r crazy to pay this amount of money for this ugly thing......besides that i ga-ron-t it's goin to have all kinds of bugs and other major issues jus like the wing did.... jus like the hp6315 did.... jus like the first pad they ever had did..... i know cause i'v had every pda ppc device they've had..... i will b purchasing the real tp2 str8 from the manufacturer. i'd rather pay the extra money than to have all the extra tmobile crap taking up extra space on the device.... and it looks soooooo sexy!!!!!

So how do you buy a 3G t-mobile TP2 from HTC directly? That sounds interesting and did'nt know you could do that. Care to give us the information on how to do this ?

You understand that you can just unlock the device, and load up a custom, or HTC Rom? That is what I did with the Dash/S620, and the HTC TyTN 2/ AT&T 8525.

Plus, the T-Mo TP2 comes with a 1700 AWS chipset, which enables you to use T-Mo 3g.

go to htc.com

it wont b the "tmobile" tp2.... it will b the original "european version" but will work on the tmobile network...... it will b naked without all the "tmobile" crap in the device

in my opinion it's all the crap that tmobile puts in that makes the device buggy for the most part. iv'e been with tmobile for 7yrs. so i know a little sumthin sumthin about all this......if u really want to get in depth with the inner workins of windows mobile check out www.xda-developers.com

So how much are they charging for this phone? And are you sure it has 1700 radio freq.for T-Mobile's 3G network? Thanks.

just go to htc.com and have at it!!!

The HTC.com version available for purchase does not have the T-Mobile Nonstandard-3G bands. I'm pretty sure. Give us a link, if you're so insistent.

u'r rite my bad ya'll.... i got hold to some bad info....

S'all good.

yo i justu looked on the tmobile and htc sites....Band (frequency): 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz (this is from the tmobile web site under specs.....Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.) (this is from the htc site under specs...... is this the same..... will the original TP2 work on tmobile?

Good job Tmobile, good way to help sell more Iphones. I have been a Tmo customer for 7 years and was really looking forward to this phone, but come on, $199 for the Iphone w 16 gigs built in! Tmo would sell tons of data plans with this. Very poor move. WinMo already has such a bad rep (rightfully so) and only the tech nerds (me included) will want to have this.

I think that's great. That means that not everyone will be walking around with this phone and the folks at TMO definately know that. This is the only phone they have that cost more than 200 bucks. They're not stupid and they realize it won't cell as much as the iPhone and I think that's the way they want it.

Newegg has it for $199 people!

Just ordered mine. I agree with Mikey Dee the less of these phones I see will make paying $349.99 worth it.

It's wirefly.com a good source. I have check out the site. when paying for it. it is required SSN# I am not sure I trust to give out my SSN, Credit Card infomation.

bought mine from tmobile and i agree i dont really like seeing everyone with a phone i own. i have paid way more than that for a phone so its really no biggie to me.

Just wait a couple months after they don't sell that many and they will lower the price. Then everyone will have a phone like you on T-mobile,Verizon,Sprint,AT&T. Well i guess only some will have the Brown Terd hanging off they belt-loops,LOL.

tmobile had the opportunity to release the TP2 first with exclusive access to the original HTC black/chrome design. The original design was sexy enuf to still other carrier customers despite WM 6.1. So what does tmobile do with this golden opportunity, you ask....

-- 350.00 .....Really TMobile????

-- sans 3.5 mm jack (ugh)

-- mocha colored......pffffft!! its BROWN

The decision makers on this one should all be banished to the same island as the clown who designed the Pontiac Aztec. jacka$$es

Sheesh.... you should look in the mirror to see who the jacka$$ is. Have you even seen the phone and handled it? Based on your comments I suspect not.

Let's go over your post:

"tmobile had the opportunity to release the TP2 first with exclusive access to the original HTC black/chrome design."

No they didn't. In fact the opposite is true, T-Mobile does NOT have an exclusive on this phone. Every U.S. carrier is rolling out their version of the TP2. Next month or two Sprint, Verizon and AT&T will be selling a TP2.

And while every design is different, those are styling details that each carrier can order. Big deal, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (For example, people have been criticizing the Sprint TP2 battery cover because it contains an embossed world map on it).

While I liked the look of the Pearl when I bought it, black/chrome does not evoke a business or professional look.

Moreover, the T-Mo TP2 is a professional and business device, it's not for those who prefer teen themed phones or something a pimp would carry.

The TP2 looks the professional expensive device that it is.

"The original design was sexy enuf to still other carrier customers despite WM 6.1."

Anyone saying "sexy enuf" puts a comment where it belongs. I digress.

What "original design?" Have you seen the variations between the carriers. There's not really any "original design."

If you mean the ones that debuted in Europe, that's just one of the many looks, styles or designs available. In the span of about four months there's going to be four to seven designs, no one can claim to have the original design, unless you mean that the first one on the market (in Europe) should be declared the original.

"So what does tmobile do with this golden opportunity, you ask...."

Based on your spelling and grammar I doubt you are some kind of insider in the business, in the know about anything. So I am not sure what "golden opportunity" you are talking about. In any event, your statement about a "golden opportunity" lacks support or foundation.

"-- 350.00 .....Really TMobile????"

Have you seen the prices being paid in Europe (try $650 US and up). Have you seen the prices being charged by Telus, the Canadian carrier? Here, I'll help you:

http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/htc_touchpro2_t7379/index.shtml

Just what price do you think this phone should sell for? $200 with a two year contract? Regrets if you can't afford to pay a fair price for this superior device, that is, far more complex and sophisticated than other phones on the market.

Of course, the best solution to your issue with price, don't buy it. Get a Sidekick. I hear prices have been reduced significantly on phones matching your needs.

"-- sans 3.5 mm jack (ugh)"

Anyone who bases a buying decision on the lack of a 3.5 mm audio port is not a TP2 customer. You are better suited for a myTouch or iPhone. Those are consumer phones, where the fun and games aspects of the phone are emphasized.

"-- mocha colored......pffffft!! its BROWN"

No, I have the phone and I can tell you that it's not brown. The front of the phone looks like all other TP2s, smoke colored plastic covering the entire face. The side rails look like brushed metal, silver with a touch of bronze.

The battery cover looks like a really dark brown brushed metal (even though it is plastic), so much so it looks expensive. It's not cheap looking brown.

"The decision makers on this one should all be banished to the same island as the clown who designed the Pontiac Aztec. jacka$$es"

I'd be curious what you do in life(can't be much based on the appearance of your post). I will simply say, who are you to be condemning anyone at T-Mobile.

Your station in life is suspect since you mention the Pontiac Aztec and the clown who designed it. I can honestly say I don't even know what that car is or looks like. If you are using the Pontiac Aztec as a metaphor or analogy to attack the T-Mobile design team, well, I think that speaks for itself on the soundness of your points.

Bottom line: Thanks for the comment. I think it important to get the SFB point of view out there, even though in the larger scheme of things (selling the TP2 to business and professionals) the opinion is irrelevant.

Well I have been following the TP2 closely, T-Mobile's that is. And I ordered on Aug 12 in the early AM, not at 10:00 am as the posted debut instructed.

Got it via USPS priority mail on Saturday, Aug 15. Shipped from GA.

The pics released by T-Mobile don't do this phone justice. It is slick, elegant, and has a superb quality feel. (For example, the stock pics make it look like there is a brown plastic frame around the display. There is no such thing. The entire front of the phone has a single piece of smoke plastic. The frame around the display looks black, not brown. So the TP2 by T-Mo looks the same as all the others out there.)

Also, the buttons/switches at the bottom are uber cool. They have a black chrome look to them and have a click that evokes quality.

The battery cover, while plastic like all the others, and about $5 to replace, I suspect, has a super smooth finish that evokes "expensive."

The rails on the side are brushed plastic with a similar feel as the battery cover. Not brown at all, more of a silver/bronze hue, heavy on the silver.

Lastly, the T-Mo TP2 is heavy. In the old days small devices that were heavy meant quality and sophisticated electronics. This thing in the hand feels like a $2000 device.

I have used my new TP2 to sync with my computer. I checked Outlook mail, blah, blah.

I transferred a 500 MB movie (converted into MP4 format) on to the microSD chip and it played full screen. It was so impressive that when I was walking by some people where they were wowing over his new iPhone, I showed them my new device. Showed them the movie playing and everyone stopped talking about his iPhone and drooled over my TP2. When I slid open the keyboard, they all fell to the floor and wiggled for an hour, in envy. (OK, that last one is not totally true, but they were envious).

I also loaded the Skyfire browser (SkyFire.com) and went to Hulu and YouTube and played flash video, FROM THOSE SITES! As you know, IE, Opera, and Android don't yet play flash files (albeit it will be out soon on those platforms and browsers).

Here is a demo I posted on YouTube of my TP2 playing flash files from Hulu and YouTube:

Lastly, went to XDA and installed the free FM Radio app. Works perfect. So now my TP2 even has an FM radio in it.

OMFG... on a device I paid a paltry $329 for a one year contract I get TV and movies via Hulu, FM radio, play converted DVD movies on a large display, in great resolution, has a great camera (with uber settings), and a cool HTC interface, and it makes phone calls too (almost forgot to mention that).

By the way, the speaker phone conference calling was one of the features being mentioned as cool, on the TP2. Get this, when on the phone I can place it face down on the desk or table, it AUTOMATICALLY puts the call into speaker phone mode! If you pick the phone up, it reverts back into the handset. Is that cool or what. I made a call and did that about ten times during it just to watch it switch back and forth. What an awesome feature. And the speaker phone quality is as good as advertised. Loud, clear, no distortion.

All in all an excellent device. (And I don't give a hoot about its lack of a 3.5 mm audio port. I use stereo BT headsets not outdated stuff with a cable, wire or a cord. Corded headsets are so yesterday.)
