Marketplace open to WinMo 6.0 and 6.1; accepting app submissions on July 27

Windows Marketplace for MobileWindows Marketplace for Mobile

Microsoft today at its Worldwide Parterner Conference in New Orleans announced that Windows Marketplace for Mobile will be available not just on Windows Mobile 6.5 as previously believed, but on Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 as well. That's slightly stunning news as it allays fears of causing a pretty deep schism among current devices. It's still not known just how many phones will get the 6.5 upgrade later this year, and a lot of people were prepared to be left out in the cold.

Also announced was that the Marketplace will open up the app submission process on July 27, and a few screenshots have been made available.

That not enough? Microsoft is also building Windows Marketplace Business Center that "will contain mobile business applications across several common industries and line of business functions from leading companies that include Avanade UK, Formotus, Ilium Software, Pyxis Mobile and WebIS.  Business Center is another way for our partners to differentiate themselves and showcase their business applications, while making it easier for users to locate and purchase the latest mobile business tools."

Still no firm date on when anything's actually launching, but we're steaming right along. So how about it, folks? That put Windows Mobile 6.5 and Marketplace in a whole new light for you? Let us know in the forums.

There's more on the Windows Mobile Team blog, and a video of Microsoft's Todd Brix after the break.

Smart move on their part. A happy customer is a repeat customer.

Nice. Good to hear that.

I'm so ready for this. I don't really care too much that it's an App Store rip off. WHat I'm really excited about is a singular place for WinMo apps. WinMo app downloading can be very intimidating for a lot of inexperienced users. In fact, most people I see with WinMo devices have never installed an app before. This is a huge step. Lets just hope they don't let us down with Seven

They just made a very smart move - but we will have to install marketplace on our phones now yes? or will a firmware update be needed

I knew that Microsoft could not possibly be that freaking stupid to leave such a HUGE market out in the cold. But they have suprised me in the past with there stupidity. In the future I see Google making a huge dent in the WinMO Market. Google is always on the cutting edge. If you don't have google voice yet, folks it is the shizzle!

Hmm,quite good !

share with guys ,i found a software which called desktopgather can help me manage my own things like adding plans or writting a diary...besides,it allows me to optimize my PC..LOL ,u may have a look...

It's a nice move - yes BUT I won't satisfy those cashing in the money and EVERYBODY (with older devices)must do the same. First Microsoft must lobby so that brands like HTC issue the winmo6.5 to devices like the original touch diamond/pro, hd etc...then be sure that I will be on the forefront to buy from Marketplace.

For our sake, boycott this latter move from Microsoft et al to USE us as their esteemed (my *ss) clientele ONLY when they want! I will not buy from Marketplace, don't be such a dumb*ss - do the same!

I have not seen Treo Pro mentioned in any of these WM6.5/marketplace threads.
Will Australia be included do think?
Any comments please?
