Microsoft's cloud sync gets detailed, may have a new name

Posted on Friday, Feb 6, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

We've struggled in the past to figure out the logic behind Microsoft's naming conventions. And about a year a go we thought things were going to get better.

More recently, we learned of the upcoming cloud services – Skybox, Skyline and Skymarket. See the pattern?

But an Engadget tipster may have thrown a bit of a wrench into that small sliver of sanity. Getskybox.com has made an appearance, though you can't actually sign up yet. (And you may be met by a certificate error. Just plow through that.) And there the service gets a new name: Microsoft My Phone. Run file facepalm.exe now.

You can, however, go to the "More info" page, where we learn the following:

  • The service will be for Windows Mobile 6 (and up) phones.
  • You'll get 200 megabytes of storage space. Interesting, because the Live Mesh beta currently gives you 5 gigabytes.
  • The service will be free "at this time."
  • You'll download an app to your phone. (The install link on the page doesn't work at the time of this writing.)
  • Back up your contacts, calendar, photos and other info to the MS cloud.
  • Access your contacts and calendar online.
  • Share photos.

Obviously we're not privy to all of the app's settings yet, but it looks like the default will be to sync your data once a day, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Hope that's customizable.

So, for now, we're going to try not to be distracted by what could turn out to be another abomination of a branding scheme and instead focus on the services. And ponder how much of this may be built in to Windows Mobile 7, or, hopefully, 6.5.

Update: Yeah, the site was down for a while. It's back up now, sans log-in links. lol.

i wish it would come out soon....i dont think it will overtake live mesh though as it is only for stuff on your phone and does not look like it will sync across multiple pc's/phones etc...just sync important data from phone to cloud....looks handy but not totally necesarry

Actually if you think about it this service will give you access to your phone info from any web browser (probably multiple phones if you install the app on multiple phones?) and perhaps more importantly for some people removes the reliance on Outlook and Activesync for getting your data on to your phone. Live mesh gives you file sync only not PIM data specifically so they both serve different purposes. Lets hope the rumoured intergration of mesh into skybox happens then all data can be synced to the cloud.

And if this story is to be believed it may very well happen - http://www.liveside.net/main/archive/2009/01/16/live-mesh-team-joins-win...

yeah, i love live mesh because it just automatically changes files across all my devices when i change them. if i can get away from activesync im happy LOL...now will it be able to grab info from outlook on my PC and sync it to my phone is another question..

Would you still need outlook on your pc since this service would sync the same data already on your phone? I guess it would be useful to have them all talking but you could just as easily go the the Myphone web interface and enter your data there, and remember, eg like in my situation you dont need to have Outlook installed on multiple pc's to manage your PIM info. For my use I think I can get away with not having Outlook on my pc.

I switched everything over to gmail, and haven't had to use outlook since.

The problem with the Google services is that contacts sync is atrocious, mainly because the GMail contacts manager is terrible. I migrated everything to Windows Live, and the mobile client syncs mail and contacts seamlessly, and both are push services too.

For me then, MyPhone is a poorer cousin of Live, with the sole excpetion of calendar sync. Why they wouldn't incorporate calendar sync in the Live services is still beyond me though.

Apologies for the dreadful spelling in the last post, but I also wanted to add that I am entirely free of Outlook and ActiveSync now because of Windows Live Essentials for the desktop, and the Windows Live Mobile on the phone.

I doubt it. It sounds like a version of Exchange syncing for those that don't have Exchange. As things are with Exchange syncing you can still sync contents to your local computer inaddition to the Exchange server.

The fact that one cannot both sycn to exchange and this service has me thinking that the service as taking advantage of the functionality already in the device for exchange syncing.

its down......msoft took down the site. shoot

Hmm this service sounds familiar. I think it's called Dashwire.com

I think the significance of the service being offered by Microsoft is that more users are likely to use it. While a power user may be willing to search around for what may be the best solutions for themselves a typical user is less likely to do searching, but if a solution is placed in front of them then they may use it even if they would not search for a solution themself.(this is an assertion I picked up from someone's blog).

If Microsoft (or the carriers) package the service with their phone then it will be a sure success. Especially if it is free.
