Microsoft Mobile Device Center still not a part of Windows by default

Windows Mobile Device Center

Allow us to get up on our soapbox for a minute. We're well aware that in 2009, it's entirely possible to go the entire lifespan of a phone without connecting it to a computer.

But, Microsoft, occasionally we do need to plug in our phones, and it'd be a big help if your Mobile Device Center (the successor to ActiveSync) were actually built in to an operating system. It's not even a part of the Windows 7 beta (at least as of build 7068, which we're very much enjoying). Sure, my phone plays quite nicely with the cloud and will work over Bluetooth. But if I want to plug in the darn thing and transfer a bunch of files (which is quicker than doing so over Bluetooth, and easier than remembering where I left my microSD card adapter), then I have to hunt down and download Mobile Device Center.

If Microsoft's serious about connecting its three major platforms – desktop, mobile and gaming/entertainment – it needs to get serious about making things easier on the user, and it can start by including Mobile Device Center with Windows 7. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised and find it in the upcoming Release Candidate version or final build. But we're not holding our breath

(And so that we're not just whining, here are the 32-bit and 64-bit download locations for Mobile Device Center.)

i want to know why we cant get it on XP...i mean, dispite what MSOFT wants XP will be around for awhile longer...HP is even to offer downgrades from win 7 to xp...they need to make it for xp

Aside from the UIs, is there really a difference between ActiveSync and Mobile Device Center? (Seem pretty similar to me.) Not quite sure why anyone would want to "downgrade" to XP from W7. But it's a strange world out there sometimes.

yeah, vista is a wreck but id take win 7 over xp

I think at the pace at which MS is trying to push out changes for WM6.5 and WM7, they're not able to lock down the design of WMDC -- once they put it into the OS, it has to work for all WM versions in the near future.

Oh I think you will find that the strangle hold of the EU and the US Fairtrade commission wouldn't want to see more software on any windows platform that promotes another microsoft product... just a guess that we will continue getting on our download for some time to come.

its not exactly that hard to just download it...

Actually, if you plug in a WinMo device and you don't have the Device Center installed, Windows will automatically go and download it, install it, and you won't even realize it.

I plugged in my Blackjack II, and it was installing the drivers and software and such, and part of that was the Device Center. It was all being done in the background, without me having to go find download links, go through and accept EULA's or anything. Within probably 2 or 3 minutes after plugging in my phone, Windows downloaded and installed everything.

So it's true it is not built into the OS, however, Windows automatically downloads and installs it for you when you need it. This way there is less applications in the OS (so if a user doesn't use WinMo, there's no need to install the Device Center or have the active sync service using resources in the background). Also, when it comes time for the team to update the Device Center, perhaps for the launch of 6.5 or something, then they wouldn't have it be tied to the Windows launch schedule where they would have to be almost done with it by now.

If it was bundled, and there is an update for the Device Center when 6.5 gets released, think about the first scenario people would have with Win7. They start their computer for the first time, plug in their phone, and already Windows is having to download updates for the software? Hm, a bit strange on why it wouldn't be up to date if you just got Win7 on launch day.

This honestly is a moot point though since Windows downloads and installs everything for you only when you need it. Obviously, if you don't have an internet connection it could be a problem, but that's a very very small percentage of users, and at that point they can use the CD that came with the phone, or find some way to access the internet to download the software.

It's also worth mentioning that this is the way that it's always been. ActiveSync has to be downloaded as well.
lol. All good points, and all true. And this is only a minor "grrrrr, why do I have to still wait on this?" rant. :) Still, if it's basically doing things the same way it does with XP, isn't that a sign?

Yes, did we forget a little thing like nearly being broken up due to abuse of their desktop monopoly to take over a new market? Somehow I don't think Microsoft wants to go that route again.

We know for a fact this is why they do not bundle their Live services with Windows, and it is very likely this is why they do not have a very integrated system for most of their OS and services.

Now the Consent Decree supervision was extended from 2007 to November 2009 in 2008 ( http://www.itwire.com/content/view/16397/53/ ) so I guess later this year we will finally be able to see X-box status on our Windows Mobile phones, have Zune Marketplace working with our Windows Mobile phones, have Live, software and services actually sync all our devices in a way that just works.

Just think - Microsoft used to have a reputation for all their software being tied together, now they have a reputation for nothing working together at all - Your tax dollars at work.

You beat me to it, I was just about to point this out. Microsoft would be more than happy to package their software in a "it-just-works" configuration.

Let us not forget the most recent challenge against them to ship versions of Windows without a browser (one may ask how do you go out and download a browser if your computer doesn't have one, they finally solved that conundrum by adding an ability in Windows 7 to disable the browser so that atleast it will be there if you don't already have one to download).

Gotta love the legal system.

Knew I shoulda gone to law school.

I strongly disagree. The more you tie it into the OS, the less likely you are to ever get an update for it outside of a service pack. Look at Vista - WMDC 6.1 came out well before SP1 did. We haven't seen any updates since, but bundling it with Windows doesn't guarantee updates either - in fact, it guarantess no updates unless part of a service pack.
