Off to Mobius

Just a quick note that I've been lucky enough to be invited out to the mobius event out in Seattle this year. If you're not familiar, mobius is a group of mobile enthusiasts who periodically get together with Microsoft to discuss the current and future state of the mobile industry. There's sometimes news that comes out of the event, which I'll dutifully pass along as I'm able. What's better and more important than that are the insights and conversation with people who are smarter-than-I.

All of which is to say that you should keep a heads up on hashtag #mobius09 on Twitter where many of us will be posting up thoughts and insights. Microsoft is hosting the event, so full disclosure: they're covering my flight, hotel, and eats.

have a great time. seattle is a wonderful city.

if you could, it would be very interesting to know if you think they understand the difference between branding and advirtising, and if any branding of advirtisiing it is coming soon for winmo. (those marshmello like icons following a person as they move around is advirtising (one can argue if it's good or not), and not very much branding.

also, fyi - the mobius hired folk working for htc and microsoft at att stores really could benefit from better training.

also, based on what you see and hear, will you be able to provide a summary of impressions or daily topics? those arre always very interesting to see.

gartner has a new report out on mobile os market shares.

looks like android is stealing share from winmo. and in the last year winmo has dropped from 11% to 7% marketshare. looked at another way, that's almost a 30% drop in relative share.

do you think this is all because of technical capabilities? i don't.

so, to what can we attribute this?

and what can be done?

could the overall msft brand be tarnished beyond repair by endless unresponded attacks from apple, and a new os from a brand everyone knows and has positive experiences from -- google -- be taking advantage of the situation.

if this is part of the truth of the situation, what can be done?
