Windows Mobile 7

And the march toward Windows Mobile 7 continues. This time, it's ZDNet Taiwan [via wmpoweruser] saying that WM7 is beginning its "Maldives" program in Q1 of next year, which basically means testing for device manufacturers. We'd heard "Maldives" in passing before, but in relation to Windows Mobile 6.5.1. So we'll have to see here.

ZDNet Taiwan's also saying that we should see Windows Mobile 7 launch in the third quarter of 2010, which is in the same window as most other rumors floating around. We've seen one that it's already been in beta. Another that it'll RTM this spring. So, work continues. Here's hoping for an announcement at CES.

When do we find out if the rumors of it not working on current devices is true or not?

I'm sure OS leaks will appear on XDA shortly after it goes out to OEMs for testing. We had development builds of WM 6.5 for about a year before it was released to the general public.

yea, I'm hoping that the OEMs will be beta testing on current devices and that leaks.

push push push.

release mobile 7!!!!!!!

You'd think that Ballmer would QUADRUPLE the number of people working on WM7 and get it released as fast as possible. He has GOT to be tired of the negative press Windows phones seem to be getting lately (some ficticious, like the Samsung rumor), along with the lackluster industry reviews of WM 6.5.

Microsoft has the muscle to do that, if they wanted! I look foward to them rebounding in a big way, but I wish it were sooner rather than later!

in some things more people/developers does not help. however in quality assurance and use testing, it can.

but as we all already know, the real problem is not functionality - it's branding. when the iphone first came out, all the techie winmo bloggers were scoffing at its lack of features. it did a few things great (user interface, upgrades via itunes, visual voicemail). but those features were capitalized on and on and on.... and on.

r weekends ago, i spent 20 minutes with a team hired via mosaic by msft and htc to promote windows mobile and htc devices in att stores. and they didn't know about voice command, about where to buy apps for winmo phones, about google maps on winmo phones. remember, these guys were trained on winmo (really badly it seems). but they knew that all these things are available on an iphone!! why is that? because apple is telling them every night on tv.

by the way, this team shared some interesting insight: the folk who are most attracted to winmo phones? - males, 35-40+. and who is walking out with iphones? teens and twenty-somethings. that tells me the issue is increasingly a branding problem.

i hope that helps someone somewhere.

In my last briefing in Redmond with the WinMo development and product marketing teams, they were clear that Maldives is *not* WM7, but the enhancements in the 6.5.1 dot release as you cite in the post above. Maldives should go to manufacturers for testing in Q1 as cited, but again, this is not WM7.
