Windows Mobile 7 vs. WM6.5: Calendars & Settings (updated)

Here's something interesting that dropped in our mailbox. What you see here the top row  is normal, vanilla Windows Mobile 6.5, but the bottom row was supposed to be WM6.5.1.

Of course for those of you who have played with WM6.5.1, you might have surmised those design elements are not part of that build and in fact, you would be correct.

From what we've been told, the bottom row is now, roughly speaking, what WM7 will look like. This was an internal mockup used for design planning.

Sure, not mind blowing but the comparison is nice to see and those little improvements to dialog boxes and menus go a long way in the end.

Update: Looks like the mad tipster's on the loose again. Pocketnow's been slipped some more shots from this same batch, it appears.

Has it been confirmed that 6.5 will be upgradeable to 7.0 when it's released?

Not unless a benchmark minimum is met (so it's been heavily rumored) the most prominent sticking point being that WinMo 7 will use capacitive touch screen whill all existing WinMo phones (cans HTC HD2) use resistive. The two are NOT interchangable and not compatible. So for the vast majority of phone out there and coming very soon..... NO.

Let's pray that the whole "capacitive requirement" isn't, and that it just provides better support for it instead.

Otherwise it looks like there will be a decent amount of people staying with 6.5.

There has never been a guarantee that any WM device would be officially upgradeable to the next major version of the OS.

Microsoft had to make a break with the past at some point, or WM was going to become completely irrelevant. This is the breakpoint. It's progress. We'll have to deal with it.

I haven't said anything about upgrading my old device to it, or any old devices. I could care less about that at this point.

I agree, MS has to break slightly with the past, but doing so much so will lose what has made them such a powerful tool.

As I've posted many times before, and others have covered (including HTC) capacative screens have drawbacks over resistive screens. It isn't some magical technology that is just "better." Do I want WinMo to support them? Yes. Do I want to be limited to capacative only screens? Not at all.

So try reading and understanding next time, this isn't about saying no to "progress" but it is realizing that not all old ways of doing things are without merit. Capacative is not as accurate, especially on smaller screens (even HTC has said that on their twitter account numerous times now) and it limits the fact you can't use gloves with them (for us in cold climates, that is a big deal especially when we have to use the device a lot in cold weather, not just simply dialing someone) and you have to have a special stylus to use on the screen.

I've found in showing people my TP2, and my MyTouch3G that the average consumer who hasn't used a touch screen, prefers the feeling of my TP2... By an overwheling majority? No, but I'd say 5:4.

So all I'm saying is DON'T limit choice by including a technology that isn't any better than resistive because it has draw backs as well.

I'm not seeing how the major awesomeness in the calander... Sure, it looks slick, but it seems to waste more display...

I would have to say i dont believe these mockups at all. After seeing all of the images of 6.5.x on xda-developers with a new row o soft keys at the bottom i dont believe that they would go back to the 2 button arrangement for keys shown here.

Though i could be wrong you know. The calander does look good though! Only a year to release now ;)

I assure you they are real--99% confidence. However, they may not be current--things do change and these were not obviously disseminated just last night, they are dated by a few months.

The exact details are not important but rather the overall intent and direction they are heading which is of interest ;-)

if you look at the task bar in the top right shot, it looks like the scrolling art on the zune hd, just a small observation

These had better not reflect the final product. If they do, I might as well just give up on WM now.

It looks just as dull and boring as ever. More usable, sure, but usability should be a basic feature, not an end goal. No one is going to want to go from something as impressive as Touchflo3D for example to something that still looks like a slightly prettied up Windows 3.11.

More iPhone-copying. Look at those on/off switches. And the icons on the call screen. Exact duplicates of the iPhone icons. Way to go MS, FailMobile 7.0 will be an iPhone clone, only 4 years late.

I think this is pretty relevant more and more portals are more or less using the similar icons but its not nice to say whether they copy or made a replica of it not sure.

Today mobiles have been very useful,it also works as a calendar... And i am happy that my nokia 5310 also contains the calendar facility that updates me regularly..
