Video First Look: Motorola Q9h

We were expecting a pretty slow day here at WMExperts. A reply to Kevin's tour-de-force post on the AT&T Tilt for the Smartphone Round Robin, maybe a little T-Mobile Shadow fun (tomorrow, maybe), but that's about it. Instead we got WM6 on the 8525, a Video First Look at the Pantech Duo, and now this: another brand new phone in the office to play around with: the Motorola Q9h.

That's right - when we said AT&T might be selling it early, we checked it out and picked one up!

A few more thoughts on the Q9h's shape after the break

Video First Look: Pantech Duo

The Pantech Duo is fully announced and available now, so the above is your first look. I said that “I am happy it's inexpensive” in the video, but somehow in my mind I was thinking (as opposed to thinking out of my mind, which also happens sometimes) that it was $99 after contract, not $199:

The Pantech duo is available now in the U.S. exclusively from AT&T for a special introductory price of $199.99 at AT&T retail stores nationwide, online at www.wireless.att.com, at select national retailers and through AT&T's business-to-business sales organizations

I suppose that the Duo might be more approachable than a Blackjack to some people, but I doubt there are a lot of those people. Pantech gets points for jumping into Windows Mobile and for introducing a pretty-cool dual-slider format. But for my money, the form factor simply isn't compelling enough to make it more desirable than the many other options out there at similar price points. My opinion: pass on the Pantech and getcherself a Blackjack.

Round Robin: Windows Mobile Guy On a Treo 680

When we decided to try this Smartphone Round Robin a couple of weeks ago, I immediately girded my loins (pictured above - just how uncomfortable “girded loins” actually are) in preparation for a full three weeks without a Windows Mobile device as my main brain. I knew it would be tough, but so far I've been managing alright.

The main reason, I suppose, is that my first week in the Smartphone Round Robin brings me the Treo 680 - in other words, I'm a Windows Mobile convert “old schooling it” with the PalmOS. The Treo 680 has been my sole device for about 5 days now - so how am I holding up with this blast from my past? Read on to find out.

(Don't forget - a comment on this post counts as an entry in the Round Robin Contest!)

Review: Mobi Products Cradle and PowerCradle for Treos

I own three cradles -— one for my office desk, one for my entertainment center and finally one near the night-stand. Two are what I’ll call the “basic”, that’d be the Mobi Cradle ($19.95) and the other is the nicer “PowerCradle” for $24.95.

Cradles are great and if you don’t have one (or two, or three), you should seriously consider it. Here’s why: it’s a convenient single place to always place your Treo when you get home—you walk in the door, throw the phone in the cradle—as opposed to say, just tossing it anywhere, inducing a mini-search and recovery mission later. The other great benefit is with the phone cradled, the Treo’s speaker is now completely exposed, allowing you to hear your alarms, incoming calls or even your streaming internet radio. Finally, if on your desk, night-stand or entertainment center, your cradled-phone allows you’re to visually see your caller ID coming in, quickly read your test message or look for new notifications without little effort (score for laziness!). Oh, plus your phone will always have a charged battery and you don’t have to fiddle with cables.

Review: Jabra JX-10 II Bluetooth Headset

Headset In Dock

Bluetooth headsets seem to be a dime a dozen these days. Heck, I can't leave the house anymore without seeing flashing blue ears and people walking around looking like crazies talking to themselves as they go about their daily lives. The shear selection of these popular devices makes it difficult for many of them to stand out. When the original Jabra JX10 ($79.95) came out, it stood out of the crowd in many respects. It boasted a unique design, excellent quality, and a designer price tag.

The Jabra JX10 Series II bluetooth headset ($79.95) is a product refresh of this widely popular headset bringing it up to par (feature-wise) with other high end headsets in the market today. As a long-time user of the JX10, I was looking forward to trying out the JX10 II to see what it brought to the table over the original JX10.

iPhone vs Windows Mobile, Email Smackdown

Iphone Vs Tilt

My pal Ben Higginbotham of Technology Evangelist has called me out publicly on our debate about email on the iPhone. I say the iPhone sucks at email, he says it the bestest (yes, I'm oversimplifying. A lot.). I've been meaning to comment over at TE (you should consider doing it yourself, it's an interesting post), but instead am just going to do a full WMExperts Smackdown here.

I love you Ben, but you might want to go find some ointment, because I have a strong feeling this is going to sting a little. Click through for the fun.

Review: SPB Mobile Shell

Posted on Monday, Oct 15, 2007 by Malatesta

Start Main-2

(Editor note: Malatesta checks in with a review of SPB Mobile Shell, easily in the top 5 pieces of software amongst us here at WMExperts. It made HobbesIsReal's list of Must Have Windows Mobile Software for a reason. It's my default "first install" suggestion for any Windows Mobile user - especially someone who is new to the OS.)

Way back in early 2007, I had given up on the Treo 700wx (and touchscreen WM devices in general) to head to the lofty and intriguing world of WM smartphones, notably the Motorola Q. Part of this was the allure of a thin device the other I wanted to try the smartphone (non-touchscreen) version of Windows Mobile.

But I switched back around March of this year and one of the reasons has to do with SPB Mobile Shell ($29.95). In short, it sort of redefined the user interface (UI) for Windows Mobile and vastly improved how I use my Treo 700wx. Indeed, every time I think about switching to a WM smartphone device, I pause and remember I’d be giving up on Mobile Shell too. So why all the fuss? I hope to explain below…

What is the Best Screen Type for Smartphones?

Posted on Thursday, Oct 11, 2007 by Malatesta

In the forums, a recent discussion came up regarding screen sizes, orientation and resolution and which is preferable. Leaving resolution to the side for a moment (since I think it’s universally agreed that higher is better), let's look at what WM devices currently offer and why some orientations are better for certain things than others.

  • WM5 & 6 Non-touch screen: 320x240 i.e. landscape. These are devices like the Motorola Q series, HTC Dash/Excalibur and Samsung Blackjack I & II
  • WM5 & 6 Touch screen: 320x240 (very few e.g. Zenum Opus), 240x240/320x320 Square (Treos & Samsung i780), 240x320 (HTC 6700, 6800, Touch, Tilt, etc.)

Overwhelmingly WM devices tend to be 240x320 orientations, and 320x240 for smartphones. Exceptions abound such as the Treo line or the HTC Vox.

So when shopping a device, which is better and for what? Obviously some of this just comes down to personal preference and some people will just flat out like one orientation over another. But besides this there are some practical things to consider when judging a device.

The Full Smackdown is after the break!

Video First Look: ATT Tilt

Posted on Wednesday, Oct 10, 2007 by Dieter Bohn

Filed Under: Smartphones, Featured; Tags: tilt, att

Our take on the AT&T Tilt - quite possibly what we predicted: The Best Damn Windows Mobile Device (in the US) Ever. Quite possibly - but not definitely. The out-of-the-box experience made one thing clear, that this device is meant for power users. It's not just that it has WiFi, GPS (which you'll need to manage carefully given the relatively small 1350 mAh battery). It's that the out-of-box experience on the device is woeful - long initial "configuration boot up" time, horrible defaults on the today screen, basically they took out nearly all of the improvements that HTC has made on Windows Mobile.

Still there is the HTC "use X to close" and flick-scroll, but before I can give the Tilt my offial "Seal of Awesomeness," I'll need to tweak the heck out of it. So expect more Tilt reportage from us - a "How to Tweak Your Tilt" and then a full review after I've bent it to my will.
