Review: Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 Stereo Bluetooth Headphones

Posted on Friday, May 30, 2008 by HobbesIsReal

HBH-DS970

I travel a lot, so I like to have my music without having to carry around another device (i.e. iPod or MP3 player) to listen to it. This is why I like bluetooth A2DP stereo headsets so much. But the challenge is finding the one that works best for when you want to use it. For example, a full headset like Motorola S805 would be perfect while flying in a plane, but probably not very practical while jogging or working out. For this very reason, I was excited to try out Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 Bluetooth Stereo Headphones.

They are small, have comfortable earbuds, and are extremely portable. I love it when I have high expectations of a product and then am pleasantly surprised when it meets or exceeds them. Here is an in depth review of probably one of the best BT stereo headsets for those who are on the go and active.

Review: Alarm Master for WM Standard

Alarm Notification

Connective Tools produces a nifty alarm manager fittingly titled, Alarm Master ($14.75) and it is simply what the title infers; an alarm manager.  This program allows you to easily set multiple alarms, customize each alarm, and view your alarm history.  The current version also places an alarm icon on your home screen when an alarm is set.

While many will prefer to set alarms through Pocket Outlook, I found Alarm Master to be a little easier to set for those occasions where a calendar entry wasn’t required.  The main menu for Alarm Master will let you review all the alarms you’ve set to avoid setting the same alarm twice.

Review: BlueTrek UFO Bluetooth Headset

Posted on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 by George Ponder

BlueTrek UFO

BlueTrek has made an impact on European markets for some time now and is quickly finding a place across the pond. Their most unique headset may be the BlueTrek UFO Bluetooth Headset (84.95). One of the smallest headsets around, its unique style is sure to turn heads. But does it have the function to back up its form?

HBH-GV435_1.jpg

In the wide world of electronics, Sony (four letters or not) is a household name. From the Playstation gaming consoles to the drool-worthy Xperia X1 (read the review here, or more details here), the Japanese company has been making quality electronics for a very long time. The joint venture between Sony and Swedish telecom company Ericsson has resulted in a mature line of mobile phones (and accessories).

The HBH-GV435 Bluetooth Headset ($59.95 at the WMExperts store) was designed by Sony Ericsson for maximum comfort and sound quality. How does it stack up? Read on...

BlackBerry Bold vs. Windows Mobile: Form Factor Fight!

Posted on Friday, May 23, 2008 by Dieter Bohn

Bold V Tilt

First Kevin got his hands on the BlackBerry Bold 9000 off eBay and put it through its crazy paces over at CrackBerry.com. If you want to know all about the BB Bold, definitely head over to their BlackBerry Bold page for more info than you'll find anywhere else. Next we headed over to the iPhone blog to pit the Blackberry Bold vs. the iPhone, complete with video. Sure, over there it's the iPhone blog, so it's natural that I would accentuate the iPhone there. Yet, there was another reason I didn't dig too deeply into the Bold.

Now we come full circle and the BlackBerry Bold has landed here at WMExperts. Here's that other reason: the Bold is busted. We've told you before that there are potential downsides to using a Network Operations Center (a NOC) to funnel all of your email and most of your data and apps (Beyond the BlackBerry downtime, that is). Add another issue to that list: RIM can (and did) shut down a PIN via their NOC. So what we have here is a BlackBerry Bold that can't email or do any apps that require the NOC or a PIN (like web browsing without WiFi and installing many apps). A BlackBerry that can't do email ain't no kind of BlackBerry at all.

So while we could do a full-on smackdown of the features that do, it wouldn't end up being much different from our previous look at the BlackBerry during the Smartphone Round Robin (First Look at the BB 8310 and Final thoughts on the same). Since we aren't Crackberry addicts, we wouldn't notice too many OS updates beyond the the Bold's updated eye candy, and there's plenty of that in Kevin's articles.

So instead we'll just keep it simple: after the break find a gigantic pile of comparison shots pitting the BlackBerry Bold up against ten different Windows Mobile devices.

(p.s. We may have this for a few days so if there's anything specific you're interested in knowing about, post questions in the comments!)

Review: REDFLY Mobile Companion

REDFLY Mobile Companion

We've discussed the Redfly Mobile Companion here before (a quick hands-on and a quicker commentary), but now we've had it here at WMExperts HQ for a week and are ready to render a verdict. That verdict: pretty darn good but not perfect.

First, a refresher: what is the Redfly? Like the maligned Foleo, the Redfy is called a “mobile companion,” which is shorthand for “intended to be used with a smartphone.” Unlike the Foleo, however, the Redfly is “dumber” yet therefore a smarter concept. What the Redfly does is connect to your Windows Mobile phone over USB or Bluetooth and “trick” it into believe it has a large, 800x480 screen and a near full-sized keyboard instead of a tiny 320x240 screen and a chicklet keyboard. So the Redfly itself stores no data and has no processing power, it all stays on the smartphone.

So although the Redfly itself doesn't have any RAM or processor to speak of, it's actually an incredibly smart concept because there is no syncing and no danger that if the Redfly gets lost or stolen the same thing will happen to your data. Also smart: Windows Mobile (for the most part) scales quite well to a larger screen. The knock on Windows Mobile has often been that it has too many “Desktop Metaphor User Interface” elements, but on a Redfly Windows Mobile sort of becomes a desktop OS, so it works.

Review: Astraware Casino

Posted on Thursday, May 22, 2008 by George Ponder

Astraware Casino

While smart phones were designed for productivity, it is hard to resist using them for recreation.  Consumers have a wide range of gaming software to choose from to help them pass the time in waiting rooms, airports, and anywhere else.  Astraware has been at the fore front of gaming software with such popular titles as Bejeweled and Zuma.  They have introduced a casino software package that is stuffed with casino games that is sure to help you pass the time.

Of their offerings, I'm particularly fond of Astraware Casino for Smartphone Edition ($19.95) (Also available for WM Professional). Read on for the full review!

Review: Smartphone Experts Retractable Sync & Charge Cable

Posted on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 by Tim Ferrill

spe_retractable-1.jpg

Every geek (and most everyone else) on the face of the planet has experienced it, the tangled mass of wires resembling spaghetti that is caused by multiple gadgets and their associated cables. Various solutions to the cable management problem exist, but most are not meant for portability and are expensive.

Retractable cables are becoming more common for scenarios where cable management and portability must coexist. The Smartphone Experts line of retractable Sync & Charge cables brings this capability to the cable (or cables) that is most central to your digital life, the sync and/or charge cable for your phone. You can find them listed on this store page and retailing for between $6.95 and $9.95 depending on your phone.

The full review follows.

Review: Plantronics Pulsar P590E Bluetooth Stereo Headphones

Posted on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 by HobbesIsReal

Plantronics 590e

Have you ever wished that your MP3 player, Gameboy, or DVD player had BlueTooth (BT) so you could use a BT wireless stereo headset with it? I know I have. I first just originally wanted to review the Plantronics P590 Bluetooth (BT) stereo headset to use with my Sprint PPC-6800, but soon realized that the P590 can add BT capabilities to anything that has a standard sized earphone jack! Plantronics did not hold back with throwing in more extras in the box than I have ever seen, let alone would have even begun to imagine.

But of course, all the advanced features and add-ons mean nothing if the headset itself cannot deliver. To find out all the surprises that the Plantronics P590e Bluetooth Stereo Headphones ($74.95) offers that totally caught me off guard after I opened the box, and to see how well it actually does perform, read my review of this BT stereo headset that made me feel warm and fuzzy all over.

Review: BlueTrek Mini Bluetooth Headset

Posted on Monday, May 19, 2008 by George Ponder

BlueTrek Mini

Bluetrek carries a reputation for stylish, innovative, and fashionable Bluetooth headsets. The BlueTrek Mini may help perpetuate that reputation. Similar to the Samsung WEP-400, the BlueTrek Mini Bluetooth Headset ($59.95) is a lightweight, miniature headset that is very stylish but how does it rate as far as performance goes?
