Review: Stuffback

Years ago before I ever bought my first PDA, I once lost my Franklin Day Planner and did not have a clue where I lost it or if it was stolen. I was lucky enough to have an honest person find it and they looked at the first page and saw my contact information and called me and mailed it back. When I got it, it still even had my money in it that was easy to see in the inside cover pocket. Have you ever lost anything expensive or important to you like your cell phone, MP3 player, digital camera? The frustrating thing about losing something like that is that even if a good Samaritan finds it, they often times have no way to find out how to return it to you. If you lose your cell phone just as the battery is dying, they cannot turn it on to see who owns it. The good news is that you can help protect anything you have by providing an easy way for someone to return it to you for a cash reward! For as low as $5 you can provide a $20 reward for any lost item through a long time running company called StuffBack. I strongly encourage everyone to read this review in order to help easily recover your cell phone when lost.

Overview

It is simple. You buy a package of StuffBack stickers, put them on your phone (or iPod, camera, etc.), register the number on the sticker at their website, and then forget about it. If that item is ever lost, it will have an 800 number for anyone to call. They will get a $20 reward (plus any additional money you would like to add to the reward) and you get your item back (you cover the shipping charges). I have been using StuffBak for years. In fact my old Kodak EasyShare DX 6490 still have their StuffBak stickers that I registered several years back.

StuffBak claims around a 70-80% return rate on lost items with a StuffBak sticker on them. Luckily I have not had an opportunity to put it to the test, but as you can see from this USA Today article who purposely left behind a laptop, digital camera, cell phone, etc... it really works.

The stickers are pretty tough and come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and styles. I actually have one along the top of my PPC-6800 that fits perfectly.

If you are interested you can even upgrade the standard retail account to a Gold or Platinum (see details of each account below), but I think for the average person the retail account is more than sufficient. StuffBack is certainly a MUST have for anything of value that you do want to lose permanently!

The only down-side to this is that you are depending on the honesty of the person finding your stuff to return it for a small reward.

If your stuff is intentionally STOLEN... this is not likley to help as the sticker will likley be peeled or scraped away.

Might as well have a diver's license number or some other engraving somewhere on your equipment IMO. That way, if an honest person turns it in to the police, they can find you for free... if a dishonest person takes the item, it takes a little more effort to locate/remove identifying marks and engravings. Still do-able... but it doesn't stand out like a black and yellow sticker.

My opinion, do both.

That's kind of the point of this....it is not a deterent for not stealing it....it is an incentive to return it if lost and then found. It is amazing how many honest people there are still left in the world, honestly. If I loose my phone and the battery dies by the time someone finds it, without something like Stuffbak I have virtually zero % chance of a person getting it back to me. At least this way I have a chance. They claim about 80% return rate. Heck even if it was only 1%, that is more than doubling my chances without it.
