Sprint Touch Diamond: Video Hands On, Comparison, Walkthrough

Posted on Wednesday, Sep 17, 2008 by Dieter Bohn

Here you go, folks, our unboxing, hands-on, comparison, TouchFlo 3D (redux), Opera Mobile 9.5 video extravaganza with the all new Sprint Touch Diamond. We're loading the device up now to bring you a full review in the coming weeks and also to give it the same definitive iPhone video smackdown treatment we gave to the original Touch and iPhone.

Impressions: Everything we liked about the original Touch Diamond is here, but slightly faster. Sprint's crap-apps are less in-the-way, the added thickness doesn't bother us nearly as much as we thought it might (it's barely noticeable), and we're loving the red paint.

Questions: give 'em to us in the comments.

Dieter,

Careful on the specs. In the video (@4:38) you said that the iPhone has a higher resolution screen than the Diamond. It's actually the opposite. The iPhone's screen is a LOWER resolution (iPhone's 320x480 vs the Diamond's 480x640).
Questions:
1) Please comment on phone locking. For example, if you turn off the phone, put it in your pocket, and then receive an incoming call, how do you accept or reject the call? I have heard that this can be prone to accidental answering or rejecting of calls on the GSM and Telus versions.
2) Visual voicemail?
@Insp_Gadget: DANGIT!! I'll add a comment to the video. Thanks for the heads-up. Should have done the voiceover one more time.

Glad to be of service.:D

Wouldn't want to confuse anyone. ;)
I have been using the origanal Touch for over a month now, and can see I want the new one.

I have just about forgot why I liked the Treo form factor when the Touch has been so much better than the 700WX I had in terms of phone performance and Bluetooth.

Also, Dieter that watch has to go. I had one just like it in the 1970's that was LED red numbers made by Texas Instruments. The watch and the 70's are dead-gone..
Great vid! If the Touch Pro wasn't coming out I'd be getting this phone, but after using my 6700 for so long I can't go without the full keyboard.
@palm_forlack, I think he's hiding a Vader robotic arm under the huge watch ;)

Kinda wishing I was on Sprint, but I'm happy with the original touch for now. Custom ROMs give me about all of the features I'd be looking for anyway
Dayum, that's a cool device. Now hows about a hands-on with that watch? ;)
Great video. Will the Sprint Touch Diamond come in black as well?
I used the Telus version for 2 weeks and returned mine on the 14-days guarantee... the main reason was the battery life which was really horrible. With heavy usage on a full charge I could get a low battery warning before noon. This was with proper conditioning of the battery over 2 weeks. Other thing are thing like on the video at 13m40s where the landscape mode doesn't work anymore... sometime the browser instead of going to landscape just goes into the background (but doesn't crash) and you have to return to it. The Youtube app was also really crashy and crashed my phone on 2 occasions. That was after a hard reset and almost no 3rd party apps loaded.

Most of these could be fixed by a newer firmware release (which I hope Sprint is using) but the battery could not so I returned it. Instead I took a "low-end" HTC S640 smartphone edition... and love it! Full querty, non-touchscreen but super easy one-handed operation and decent battery life.
Deiter - does the keyboard rotate to landscape mode for texting and/or email input?
Spooky... it's like you read my mind about the watch. :-) If I'm not mistaken, it's made an appearance before in a wmexperts picture or video.
I just received my Sprint Touch Diamond last Saturday and have put it through it's paces. I have listed the pros and cons below. I will return mine and keep the Treo 800w until the Touch HD comes out.

Pros: Great screen!, good speaker and speaker phone, small size, alot of RAM. Microsoft Voice Command works much better than on the Treo 800w, but bluetooth quality is much worse!

Cons: Get's very hot! I have been with Sprint for 13 years and this is the hottest running phone they have ever had. Too Small and I have small hands, poor camera picture quality (my Treo 800w is close to the same and only 2MP), not very fast even with the 528Mhz processor (my Treo 800w is faster), poor battery life! (larger than Treo 800w battery but still doesn't make it past 2pm, the screen takes more battery than the Treo's), YouTube is very very slow on this (rebuffers alot on longer video's, doesn't compare to iPod Touch or iPhone YouTube), poor browser (Opera is really slow, IE was 5 times as fast on this device), very hard nav dial (pushes really hard not very accurate), touch screen not as good as original Touch, very low amount of ROM available for storage (Treo 800w has 4 times the ROM storage out of the gate), can't increase storage through microSD (limited to 4GB, that's all), Touch Flo3D is better than original versions but still not very fluid and efficient on this (I had to turn it off and just use Resco Explorer Today Plugin), bluetooth isn't great (I use a Jawbone II and it is terrible on this, my Treo 800w is 200% clearer), very poor signal strength (I even have an airrave installed at my house and I am lucky to get 1 bar, I get 6 bars on my Treo 800w even in the basement), No roaming only option, I know it can be hacked but it shouldn't have to be.

Don't get me wrong, there is alot to like about this phone but if you are a serious business person you will get really frustrated with this phone very quickly.
