Skype discontinued for Windows Mobile?

This is sort of out of left field, but evidently Skype has discontinued and pulled the Skype Mobile software for Windows phones.

Why? They sort of answer in their FAQ, but to be honest it is more of a dodge:

Unfortunately, Skype Lite – a version of Skype for your mobile phone – and Skype for Windows Mobile are no longer available for download from our site.

We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop.

We felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Mobile were not offering the best possible Skype experience.

Fair enough and we actually agree. Skype for Windows Mobile was really a huge program (~10MB) that ate a lot of resources. Granted, it did offer nearly the "full Skype experience" but at processing cost.

For Skype/VOIP, we here at WMExperts have always found Fring a much better alternative.

Still, Skype is obviously begging the question with their response: are they going to, you know, release a new version that is much more awesome and built better? Or are they just pulling it and wiping their hands altogether of Windows phone?

For the time being, you can still download and use Skype here. Or if on your phone, just scan the MS Tag to the right to direct download (11.7MB!)

say what?? how dare they, and then they come up with such a corny response like that? this is discrimination this is like a restaurant saying "we are only going to serve only white people from now on because they tip us more and are more polite to us" they are such malditos desgraciados crétinos tarados asquerosos!!

It's time I start looking for a desktop replacement for Skype as well then. Any recommendations? (I need to be able to call land lines for which I now pay Skype $3/month)

All Windows desktousers should find a more robust VOIP client Kiss ass skype

I loved your post. Well, I think I loved it. It was hilarious. 2 thumbs up.

If you quit your day job, you can probably get a full-time gig writing scam emails for Nigerian princes whose fathers were killed by tribal factions in an effort to get the 300 thousand zillion US dollars safely hidden away in a numbered bank account in the Bahamas.

I feel certain that if Skype reads your post, they will be satisfied they made the right decision by pulling WinMo support.

skype made big mistake not having for windows mobile. they should get rid of it for iphone has iphone 3g sucks just like lack of feature iphone. also fool going for android which another phone that sucks. for me i dont care has therre allot 3rd party app that does same what skype does so no worries. skype must be high has there are millions millions windows mobile users and windows phone are best in mobile technology. i can wait when windows phone 7 comes this fall. maybe this let skype realize windows mobile the best. why else would Big name companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, Toshiba, dell, HTC, Palm and many manny more.... yup Windows Mobile Wins and Skype Loose... such idiots...

You really think Skype is going away? Really?

Consider the following: "Verizon to allow UNLIMITED calling over 3g beginning next month". Read the article for yourself here:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/16/verizon-to-allow-unlimited-skype-call...

...you don't think this could be related to that business decision to collaborate with Verizon, do you?

;)

More likley they will be releasing an even more stipped down version for public consumption, while allowing Verizon customers to enjoy future developments and improvements to the existing mobile software.

But that's just the sinic in me talking.

The reason they pulled it is probably the stupid earpiece issue that has plagued Windows Mobile and Skype since originally released. Due to the way each different phone is programmed, they are unable to build in support for making the sound not come out of the speaker instead of the earpiece. If you look at the forums for their WinMo client, or ever see the comments on a story about Skype for WinMo, it is filled with complaints about this issue, an issue they are unable to fix.

No doubt they were tired of people complaining about this, and just said we'll try again for the next OS where we can actually do something about it.

This is very sad news for me, as I use Skype exclusively on my phone for calls with an AT&T unlimited data plan($35 a month with no minutes). I'll have to check out that Fring and see if it can do the job better.

Maybe. But Fring solved that problem months ago on their Skype/Voip program for Windows Mobile, so I'm not sure why they can't solve it when it has been demonstrated as possible.

I tried Fring I am with VZW and Omnia II and it was a terrible experience, calls kept getting dropped, wifi and 3G

Given there was always a love/hate relationship between Skype and Microsoft, Skype's decision isn't surprising. WM never officially opened up the phone speaker to third-party apps (Skype's official response was that WM phone manufacturers at their discretion could provide a driver to provide access. As far as I know, only E-TEN ever did.) and more that one Skype first-timer nearly lost their hearing when the audio unexpectedly blasted out the speraker-phone speaker.

This arrangement was obviously at the behest of the carriers to discourage the use of VOIP clients on their phones.

I'm trying to get Fring to work on my WiFi with Skypeout. Fring says Dialing, then immediately Call Ended. I don't have a data plan on my phone.

Should this work? Fuze phone

Gotta love forums and blogs. The phone number needed the + sign in front of the number: +15305551212.
