Step 1: Engage in a dizzying flurry of splits, mergers, and acquisitions that are complicated enough to spin even Stephen Colbert’s head around Cingular Wireless LLC, the nation’s largest cell phone provider, said Wednesday its fourth-quarter profit nearly quadrupled, boosted by customer growth during the holidays. Cingular said it earned $782 million during the fourth quarter, compared with $204 million in the same quarter of 2005.

What we do know: it appears to have fixed a significant number of the niggling bugs and hassles in the Dash, namely: under-the-battery memory expansion slot, aggravating keyboard, (let’s hope) terrible touch-bar-volume strip implementation, and lack-of-3G.... Signal reception is as good or better than the Excalibur and the JOGGR touch-wheel has been moved to the direct side instead of by the screen.

With all the mergers and name changes that AT&T has gone through in the past 10 years or so, it’s a wonder that they (whoever “they” even is these days when it comes to AT&T) still think that the brand has enough legs to do better than “Cingular.” I almost disagree. “AT&T Wireless” has always connoted “2nd-tier wireless carrier” to me, but wh *— It will begin selling AT&T-branded wireless services to its large pool of corporate phone and Internet customers, allowing it to offer discounts for bundles that were impossible when Cingular was a separate entity.

Earlier I complained that Cingular made you jump through too many hoops to find out if they have UMTS in your area. Boy Genius comes through with an honest-to-god *list* of cities. Being based in Minneapolis myself, I'm actually sort of glad that my hometown isn't listed (yet) -- makes me feel better about going with T-Mobile

As Mobile Burn points out, you can go to Cingular's coverage map and zoom in close to see if you have 3G coverage. Alas, Minneapolis is not included. Next time, Cingular, just give us a list, hey?

I don’t have much to say about this except that maybe if the designers of MySpace weren’t so enamored of Flash and of horrible, horrible web design services like this Cingular, the largest U.S. wireless phone carrier, will offer a version of popular Internet social network MySpace on its phones in an expansion of their partnership, the companies plan to announce on Monday. For an additional $2.99 per month, customers will be able to upload photos taken on cellphones, read and respond to MySpace e-mails, update blog entries and view and search for friends from their handsets Read: Cingular to offer MySpace on cellphones - Yahoo!

I recall reading that we ought not hold our breaths for the HSDPA update Seems like we could have the Treo 750 by Christmas or shortly after.... This demo unit only means that the release will be soon but we still haven’t heard a date yet, just the broad “Q4” time frame.

PhoneScoop has published a preview/review of the Samsung Blackjack, YATQKWMS (Yet Another Thin Qwerty Keyboard Windows Mobile Smartphone), and overall they seem pretty happy with it.... Like Samsung’s other recent entry into this category, the i320, it is narrower than the Q, Dash or almost any other QWERTY phone.
