WM6 on a Samsung Blackjack

The leaked ROM was taken off of the forum where I found it, which is unsurprising. I imagine that it wouldn't be too difficult to find with a little Googling, but here's the thing, I think I'm going to recommend against doing that. Not just because you'll be in sketchy legal territory, but also because the update process didn't go very smoothly - my Blackjack froze on the screen you see pictured here. I was worried I was going to have a thin little brick. Luckily, though, it came out ok after I removed the battery. There's not a lot of surprises here - it's Windows Mobile 6 on a Blackjack. I don't think it's the final update, though, as the boot time was very long and there were a few little strange spots in the settings (Hardware Rev0.0 -- what!?).

So the verdict is: wait. I hope you won't have to wait long. In the meantime, you can stew by watching this quick little video of a Blackjack running Windows Mobile 6.

Samsung's Awesome Smartphone Homescreen

Carousel, Samsung's custom home screen they developed for the non-US SGH-i600 (that's a Blackjack with WiFi, basically) has made the rounds before. Now that people are actually getting their hands on the little wonder, screen shots of the great interface are coming around again. *Me Likee*. I like it enough that I spent more time than I care to admit yesterday hunting around the web looking for somebody who has provided a ROM dump of the i600 so I could install this on my own Blackjack. No joy yet, but if you find something *please* let me know.

CTIA Day 2: Living Proof

Day two consisted of walking the show floor to see what we could see. Sadly, there's wasn't anything earth shattering. Here's the first bit of non-earth-shattering rumor confirmation: LG is indeed a new manufacturer of Windows Mobile phones. The proof is in the image on the right - a simple prototype of a WM6 device that we weren't allowed to *touch*. The casing: surely not what will finally come to be. In fact, pretty much all we've learned from this is that LG is capable of slapping together a WM prototype.

CNet Smackdown, Blackjack Pwns Blackberry 8800

Yes, I am giving away the ending, no, I do not care. The Blackjack absolutely decimated the Blackberry 8800 in a head to head, and rightly so. If Cingular/ATT (Can I stop calling them Cingular yet?) would just get off their duff and put up 3G in my area I wouldd switch to the Blackjack in a heartbeat. As it is, I am mostly a Dash man right now. Hurry up ATT!

When you're starting a new site you want to build up a great community of readers and of folks who post great stuff to your forums. Imagine my *bliss* when gadgetluva submitted this review (which is after the break and which you *must* read) then, it almost makes up for the downtime we experienced on Friday and over the weekend (sorry about that, by the way).
