Video First Look: T-Mobile Shadow

My, what a week! First the Pantech Duo arrived and we shot a video of it, then we did the same with the Motorola Q9h on AT&T. Now we have the **T-Mobile Shadow**. As I say in the video, the build quality is stupendous and it's a very nice-feeling device in the hand. Very light, very nice.

T-Mobile 3G Coming Soon?

While I can’t think of any examples of T-Mobile having a phone with anything better than EDGE on it, releasing this particular phone doesn’t necessarily mean 3G is en-route — it’ll still work on EDGE.... When I lambasted reviewed the T Barring any unforeseen roadblocks, T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network might be launching within the month.

Sprint Has Horrendous Customer Service, Sky Still Blue

Apparently I’m lucky to have left, as the tech blogging world is all aflutter recently over Sprint and their evils. They are kicking out as many as 1200 users because they called tech suppor Sprint, apparently fed up with excessive calls to customer service, decided to unilaterally sever a customer’s line of service.

T-Mobile MDA vs. Wing: Should You Upgrade?

Img 0911-1

Now that the T-Mobile Wing is out and available in the stores, there’s probably a healthy amount of MDA users out there wondering if it’s worth the price to upgrade. Now, far be it from me to tell you how to spend your money - 500 bucks before contract discounts is a lot of money. And on paper, the Wing doesn’t exactly blow the MDA out of the water. Take a peek at what hasn’t really been upgraded:

What specs are better? Well the Wing has a 2 megapixel camera, the MDA’s is 1.3. That’s about it, actually, except…

So the main differences come down to two things: Windows Mobile 6 on the Wing and the Wing’s improved form factor. I won’t get into WM6 too much here (it’s better, but in my opinion it won’t knock your socks off); instead let’s look at the form factor differences. Read on for a photo-fortified-form-factor smackdown between the Wing and the MDA.

T-Mobile Wing Gallery

Img 0855

Yes, I have the T-Mobile Wing and yes, it’s the hotness. I want to do a video, a review, a shootout, a whole lotta things. But there’s absolutely no T-Mobile signal where I live and apparently Cingular isn’t playing nice with the roaming agreements - I just plain can’t get signal at all. I like to use a device before I review it, so that’s coming. Meanwhile, check out some pretty images after the break.

Anecdote mode on.

…Before the break, though, a note. I currently waiting on a call back from T-Mobile’s customer service. When I told them my plight (i.e. no signal but I’m keeping my T-Mo number for forwarding), they said they’d unlock it (that’s a hint for you unlock code seekers, maybe). Anyhow, the unlock code they had isn’t working, so a “Wing specialist” is investigating. T-Mobile has consistently rated tops for customer service and my experience is in line with that. Oh, and the hold music? The Flaming Lips’ “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song”. T-Mobile For The Win! Now just give us 3G, guys.

Anecdote mode off.

Check out the pics after the break.

T- Mobile Wing Released

Image Phones Wing Open T-Mobile let out the press release early this morning, the T-Mobile Wing is out for $300 with a service contract. No surprises, it's the thinner version of the long-in-the-tooth MDA. It's a very nice phone, but the lack of 3G (blame T-Mobile, who hasn't ramped up their network after their bandwidth acquisition last yet) and the 201 mhz processor makes me die a little inside. But just a little - this looks to be a good holdover for the T-Mo crowd until 3G kicks in. After the jump, a collection of quotes from the early reviews.

T-Mobile Wing

Hot on the heels of talking about putting the MDA out to pasture, Gadgets on the Go points out this neat little rumor of a replacement: the T-Mobile Wing. Specs are fairly similar to the MDA, actually, but the Wing speeds up that same OMAP proce T-Mobile Wing (HTC Atlas) which scheduled to release in Aug, 2007.

I <3 Mobile Secretary

Following up on my last post about T-Mobile, here’s a quick software tip: The Mobile Secretary, which is a great little piece of software developed by BCross Just enter in the phone number in which to forward to, and all text messages sent to your device will be resent to the other device. There is also the option of appending the sender info to the message so that you know who it originally came from as well.

MDA Vanishes from T-Mo's Website

Not to be mean, or anything, but I’ve found the Dash to be snappier and more powerful than the old warhorse slider, the T-Mobile MDA.... As such, the handset has completely disappeared from T-Mobile’s website.

The Circle is Complete: T-Mobile Raises SMS Rates

Articleimages Virtualcontent 83685 T Mobile Verizon did it, Sprint did it, and Cingular did it, now T-Mobile has too: raised the per-message cost of SMS messages. I guess they were just feeling left out. I'm still bothered by the fact that as the infrastructure costs of this data goes does that the price is going up, but oh well. I recently switched to an unlimited text plan, so I'm not sure I'll be able to use this technical breach of contract to break my contract, but if you're itching to leave T-Mo, here's your chance.

More on T-Zones, It Should Be Back To Normal

PhoneNews points out that T-Zones should be back and provides a few more details about why it went down. Lots of folks experienced problems with the cut-rate internet service lately. Given that the Dash has a T-Zones *button* on it, closing down ports on the thing was a bone-headed move by T-Mobile. Here's to hoping they don't do it again.

T-Mobile Shutting Down the "T-Zones Loophole"?

jkOnTheRun notes that lots of people are experiencing data connection problems with T-Mobile and theorizes that the possible reason is that T-Mobile has finally gotten wise to the “T-Zones Loophole”, which allows you to get access to the full internet while only paying for the supposedly WAP-ony T-Zones service.... Some folks are offering the theory that T-Mobile finally caught on to users who have been using the web services by exploiting a hole in T-Mobile’s setup and that the carrier has blocked all the various ports to shut that down.

T-Mobile (still) has the best customer service

Virtualcontent 83685 T Mobile Maybe it's because they don't have to waste any resources on, oh, *3G data*, but T-Mobile has, for the 5th year in a row, had the best customer services amongst the US carriers. That's why I let [Mike Overbo](http://www.treocentral.com/content/About/authors.htm?id=65) talk me into them despite their tragic lack of UMTS, HSDPA, etc.
