Google Maps Now Does Location By Tower Triangulation

Ironic that we saw this over at our sister-site iPhone Blog, Phone different, since it doesn't yet work on the iPhone, but here's the skinny. The newest version of Google Maps will now take a shot at guessing your current location by looking at the relative signal strength of the cell towers around you. You can watch a cutesy YouTube Video to get an idea of how it works. No GPS necessary, baby! This basically puts Google Maps a leg up on Windows Live Search, which had been our previous favorite map solution. Hopefully Microsoft will catch up soon, because we do prefer their directions and other features like movie times and gas prices. We also like WLS's voice search option, we just wish it worked a little more reliably.

gPhone: Android to be Announced Today?

The real challenge to Microsoft is that “Android,” as it is supposed to be called, is likely going to be offered for a license fee of approximately $0 to manufacturers. Some of the costs may be offset by some sort of mobile ad structure -- which I'm very skeptical could work - screen real estate is just too precious to waste pixels on ads.

Google to Compete Directly with Windows Mobile

The only difference is that, much like their internet offerings, the OS will be free, likely subsidized by ads: “The essential point is that Google’s strategy is to lead the creation of an open-source competitor to Windows Mobile,” said one industry executive, who did not want his name used because his company has had contacts with Google. “They will put it in the open-source world and take the economics out of the Windows Mobile business.”Some believe another major goal of the phone project is to loosen the control of carriers over the software and services that are available on their networks.

It's the Software, Stupid.

So the New York Times just did a write up on Bill Gates' impending (semi)retirement and what it means for Microsoft. Of course the message is that all is well, nobody's worried, everything's fine, move along, nothing to see here, etc etc. On page two, though, we get some nice bits about how Microsoft feels about the oft-rumored Google Phone. Let's take a look:

“How many products, of all the Google products that have been introduced, how many of them are profit-making products?” he asked. “They’ve introduced about 30 different products; they have one profit-making product. So, you’re now making a prediction without ever seeing the software that they’re going to have the world’s best phone and it’s going to be free?”
**Zing!** I have a few thoughts on this quote and a bit of editorial after the break. Because Apple's entrance into this space and Google's rumbling have **finally** made this the conventional wisdom about smartphones: **It's the software, Stupid!**

Google Buys GrandCentral

I said that my main concern with GrandCentral is whether or not they’d be able Being part of Google will helps us make our vision of improved voice communications one step closer to reality and bring innovative communications services to millions of users around the world. This will also ensure that your GrandCentral number is here for the long run, and that no matter how often you move, change jobs or phone providers, everyone can still reach you through the same phone number.

Google Buying GrandCentral?

GrandCentral is a great service (but I still wish it offered SMS forwarding) and a purchase by Google means that I would be much more likely to use it.... Google is in acquisition discussions with telephone management startup GrandCentral, we’ve learned, and we have a high degree of confidence that the deal has actually been closed.

Google Maps - Playing GPS Catchup on Other Devices

Gmm Images Phone En A story is making the rounds that Google Maps Mobile now supports GPS. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I've been using GPS in conjunction with Google Maps Mobile on my Windows Mobile devices for awhile now. Since February. Heck, I even posted a Valentine's Day Video detailing how to set up Google Maps with a Bluetooth GPS puck. So congrats to you, Blackberry 8800, for getting GPS support in Google Maps Mobile. It's almost like your OS offers quality 3rd party app support and development. Almost. > *Google's mobile maps software will now use the GPS capability of many newer handsets (with GPS carrier support) to pinpoint your location and make directions and navigation just that much nicer.*

Google Maps Available for WM (Updated with Screen Shots)

Ha HA! I've been jealous of my PalmOS buddies with their fancy Google Maps on their less-than-fancy devices. Now it's available for Windows Mobile (and Pocket PC 2003 and up) - both PPC and Smartphone Edition. I'm downloading as I type! I still think that Live Search Beta and Microsoft's Virtual Earth for Mobile are pretty cool, but I adore Google Maps on PalmOS. Updates as soon as I've played around a bit.
