The First Device

I’m in the midst of writing Part 3 of my iPhone vs HTC Touch series (Part 1 here and Video Part 2 here), partially because my comrade Mike over at the iPhone blog Phone different has announced that he’s going to call me out on our iPhone podcast because I recently used the phrase “iPhone killer” in my Sprint Touch Hands-on Impressions. The upshot of that link heavy introduction is that I have a new concept in my arsenal of smartphone punditry that I learned from the Foleo and its curious absence (of all things): The First Device.

Great New Soft Keyboard

Just yesterday I hoped that we’d see a thumable QWERTY/suretype mashup keyboard from HTC, well today it looks like somebody’s beaten them to the punch: CooTek.

More on the Touch, Touch Dual

I use the current EDGE-only HTC Touch as my main device, but I’ve been loathe to talk about it since it hasn’t received any official carrier support here in the US. That may be a mistake, though, as HTC recently announced they’ve sold ** the new HTC picture viewer, which uses gestures, and perform similarly to the iPhone. I think their circular gesture is actually more intuitive than the iPhone’s and can probably be done more easily one handed too.

HTC Owns "Touch" Trademark, Wants to Make Nice

HTC does indeed own a worldwide trademark on “Touch” for a handheld device and could, Ching-hung Wang (transliterated from Chinese), marketing manager of HTC pointed out that he does not think Apple’s iPod touch was targeting HTC since Apple should put its focus on bigger companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. As for whether iPod touch violates HTC’s trademark, Wang pointed out that in the past Apple and Cisco were able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement over the rights to the iPhone trademark, adding that the question surrounding the rights to the Touch trademark would need further observation.

HTC Nike Revealed, for Japan

The improvements over the HTC Well not a lot to say on this one since we are aware of this product since several month now, but in a nutshell, the Nike is a HTC Touch with a retractable keyboard, it will run Windows Mobile 6 Professional, has a 2.6” touch screen with a QVGA resolution (yepp that sucks).... Our device has a 2Mpix Digital camera as well as a 1Mpix one on top of the screen in order to let you enjoy the craziness of Video Call (Who uses this anyway?).

HTC Coming Soon: Phone Roundup

Next up: an update to the HTC Touch, an update I do not approve up, by the way.... The real hassle with the Touch is definitely not dialing numbers, it’s that there isn’t a decent full screen keyboard built-in.

HTC Touch vs. iPhone, Part 2: Video Smackdown

And it turned into a more general “Windows Mobile vs. iPhone” sort of deal, so it turned in a long (25 minutes) one. So grab a cuppa and witness the low-key smackdownery.

HTC Touch vs iPhone, Part 1

Here they are on my desk, sitting quietly next to each other. On the inside, though, both are smoldering cauldrons of hate and jealousy.

First Look: HTC Touch Video

We weren't the first on our block to get an HTC Touch, but we may be the most excited. Check out the video first look, below. Summary for those of you who can't watch the video at work: It's thin, light, and very good looking. Entering text is going to be a hassle without some 3rd party solutions, but the TouchFLO interface is really neat. I'm almost as enamored as this guy. Did I mention thin and light? I never thought a full-featured touchscreen device could be this small (iPhone notwithstanding).

HTC Touch "Viral" Campaign

Normally, the words “Viral marketing campaign” are enough to send me running to the hills, screaming about out-of-touch marketers and their misuse of catchphrases. HTC, though, seems to be getting their viral sea legs under them.

HTC Touch - What We Expected

Picture 2-22 HTC promised a big announcement and it looks like they've delivered what we expected: a improved-touchscreen version of of the Elf. HTC's Flash-based site, , shows off the new UI goodness. The key point seems to be that it can easily detect sweeps of your finger *and* that it can tell the difference between a stylus and a fingertip and adapt accordingly. HTC calls it TouchFlo and we call it "not quite as good as the iPhone" - this doesn't appear to be geniune multitouch, my friends. Nevertheless, the new UI they've slapped on top of Windows Mobile 6 is very lickable - it basically takes the idea of SPB Mobile Shell a few steps forward. Specs: - Dimensions: 99.9mm (L) x 58mm (W) x 13.9mm (T) - Weight: 112g with battery - 1GB microSD storage card included / 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM - 2.8" LCD touch screen with backlight, 240 x 320 dots resolution with 65,536 colours - Battery Life: Rechargeable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1100 mAh - Standby time: Up to 200 / Talk time: Up to 5 hours - Camera: 2.0 mega-pixel CMOS colour camera - Windows Mobile 6® Professional with Direct Push Email and HTML email support - Wireless Connectivity: GSM/GPRS/EDGE Tri-band: 900, 1800,1900, Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth® 2.0 - Choice of two colors at launch - elegant soft black or alluring wasabi green *Alluring wasabi green*, eh? Spicy! It's available in the UK now and should hit the US a bit later. Check out more photos of the Touch after the break. Be sure to head over to and click "Want" -- they're giving one away.
