Review: Powermat wireless charger

Posted on Wednesday, Jan 13, 2010 by George Ponder

My wife uses an iPhone, my son a Samsung phone, and I've got HTC, Samsung and Palm (as well as whatever I happen to be reviewing at the time) phones. Add my daughter's Nintendo DS Lite, a few iPod Touches and we begin to run out of electrical outlets and we also have to deal with the spaghetti pile of cords.

In the same boat? If so, Powermat may have a solution to help clean up the clutter numerous chargers present. The charger is offered in the WMExperts Store for $97.95. It will handle up to three devices at once, tying up only one wall outlet.

Ease on past the break to see how well the Powermat performs, not only in charging devices but also in clearing up some of the clutter.

Review: Seidio Innodock Jr. Desktop Cradle

Seidio Innodock, Jr - Docked

There’s something about having a high-end phone laying prone on your desk that just seems wrong. Is it just me, or is getting a dock for that shiny new Touch Pro 2 a high priority for anyone else? Seidio is one of those manufacturers that are really one of the go-to companies when it comes to accessories for Windows phones. A prime example of that is the Innodock Jr. Desktop Cradle.

Review: Griffin PowerDuo Universal

Posted on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 by Tim Ferrill

Griffin PowerDuo - Profile View

If you are a regular reader of this site, chances are you are both a Windows Mobile power user and a gadget fiend. If you fall under either of those categories, the conundrum of keeping your devices charged while still having the convenience of a portable device can be a hassle. More often than not, our device comes with a single charging solution for use at work or home.

Enter Griffin’s PowerDuo Universal charging solution. Griffin gives you the best of both worlds, offering a single solution that gives you a generic power source (through a USB port) in both a 12v car charger (AKA PowerJolt) and 15 amp charger for home or office use (dubbed PowerBlock). Both the PowerJolt and PowerBlock come in this single package for $31.95.

(This will even work with non-Windows Mobile devices, like Phil and Mal’s favorite, the ZuneHD; hence the use of the word “Universal”.)

CTIA group pushes micro USB as standard

Micro USB

While a number of you probably celebrated Earth Day yesterday by driving to work in second gear (or was that just us?), the folks at CTIA made themselves a little more useful and released a statement supporting micro-USB as the standard for the "Universal Charging Standard" initiative.

Developed by the Open Mobile Terminal Platform industry standards group and recently adopted by the GSMA, the UCS aims to reduce energy consumption and enhance the customer experience through the adoption of a single “one-charger-fits-all” solution for new wireless devices by January 1, 2012. The UCS will use the Micro-USB format as the common universal charging interface, and use energy efficient chargers in compliance with U.S. “Energy Star” requirements for external power adapters that will provide an estimated 50% reduction in standby energy consumption.

Sounds good to us. But another 2½ years before any standard would go into effect? Sigh.

Review: Cellet Emergency Charger

Posted on Monday, Apr 20, 2009 by HobbesIsReal

In my line of work, I travel a lot. It may be just a long day away from the office with local driving, or an 11-hour cross-country trip with three airplanes and two airports. I also do a lot of camping and fishing, which pose obvious power-availability challenges. No matter what, I have learned to have as many emergency power options as possible. But what if you could top off your phone’s battery with a regular alkaline AA battery?

That is exactly what Cellet offers with its emergency battery charger. For $14.95, if you find that you are in a situation where you need it, you would probably gladly pay twice that… as long as it really worked. I put it to the test. To find out if this is a flashy gizmo with no punch or an indispensable item anyone who travels MUST have, then jump on inside and read the full review…

Review: Freedom Mobile Power

Posted on Friday, Mar 27, 2009 by Tim Ferrill

Filed Under: General Accessories; Tags: charger, Freedom, review

As our devices become more powerful, packing more electronics into the tiny black slabs we've become so fond of; many of us are finding that we have to find creative ways to conserve our batteries in order to make it through the whole day without being force to recharge.

Freedom (the company) has given us several products that add functionality to our handhelds without adding limitations. Their keychain GPS solutions (Keychain GPS and Keychain GPS 2000) have both earned rave reviews. Freedom's Mobile Power ($49.95 from the WMExperts store) is a self contained power charger that features a 1800mAh battery and male and female mini USB ports. The idea is that the charger is something you can carry around with you and plug in if you need an extra boost through the day.

Would you like to be able to charge your WM phone out backpacking or fishing for a few days when you do not have anywhere to plug it in? Are you one that thinks it might be cool to charge your WM device with solar power? Well these were some of my first thoughts when I first saw Solio's Solar Charger ($79.95)... plus it just looks cool. Maybe you are one for wanting to do your part in being as Green as possible in this electricity & battery driven society. No matter what the motivation of the individual might be, I was interested in seeing if this Solio's Solar Charger can really pull off what it claims. The bottom line is... well maybe you should read on to find out.

A few reviews back I extolled the virtue of using a charger cradle for your 700w smartphone and today I’m back with a second review, this one for the Moto Q ($29.95) made by Motorola themselves (note: this is not for the Q q9 series, though they are similar).

Care to see some nice pics and my thoughts on this Q-ccessory (is that a word? It is now!), then click da link.
