TouchTwit gets bumped to v1.6

It seems as if the Twitter-client wars have simmered down a little bit (remember when we had updates like every few weeks?), but the biggies are still dropping some changes.

In this case, TouchTwit has updated to v1.6 (the author has been busy with civil service) and there are some nice new features and fixes:

  • New notification for "new followers"
  • New notification for "unfollows"
  • Some Theme-bugs fixed
  • Lesser memory ussage
  • Lesser cpu ussage
  • Scrolling bugs on 1Ghz processors fixed
  • More->Following was modified
  • And a lot of small bugs are fixed too

Overall it seems to work quite well, although we find the background vs. foreground sync option a bit confusing and limited (only 1 hour in background?).

Still, you can't beat the graphics and that scrolling all for a very fair $1.99.  Updates can be found in the Windows Marketplace.

xImapPusher: IMAP Idle client for Windows Mobile

Posted on Tuesday, Dec 22, 2009 by Malatesta

One e-mail standard that Windows Mobile has been missing since day one is IMAP idle--an advanced form of the IMAP standard.  The idle version is essentially push e-mail and it's very popular (Gmail officially supports it) as it is quick and is pretty good with battery life.

Fixup over at XDA has taken the open-source IMAP Pusher Service and made a handy WinMo client--one that also supports multiple IMAP Idle accounts.  He points out some interesting drawbacks in using Exchange Gmail too:

  1. Almost all mail servers now support IMAP idle, including Gmail, while AS only works with MS's proprietary Exchange server.
  2. Gmail's AS push is still not reliable enough to be practically usable. It does not let you use your own domain as reply email address. When you delete a gmail message in AS, it goes into Achieve instead of Trash.
  3. AS does not support multiple accounts. You can use both AS and xImapPusher at the same time on the same phone.

To setup, have your IMAP account setup already in Outlook; set it to check once daily.  Install the xImapPusher .cab to your device (soft-reset for good measure), run the 'Accounts Config' followed by running 'xImap Pusher' application.  You should then see your data-arrows activate and begin pushing your email.  You also need to have .NET CF 3.5 installed.

Downside is there is no scheduler, so you'll have to remember to turn it off (run 'xImap Pusher' again) if you don't want it checking.  Still, we've been using it for a few hours now it seems pretty solid and simple to us, so give it a shot.

moTweets gets bumped to v1.5; Gets Lists support

moTweets (see full review here) got a nice bump yesterday, like every other program evidently.

New in v1.5:

  • Auto-refresh Popup notification will no longer come up
  • Removed message to ask to go online, no longer required
  • NEW: Now has the option to play system sounds
  • NEW: Picture services twitpic.com, yfrog.com, twipl.net
  • NEW: Initial implimentation of Twitter Lists, can view the lists
  • NEW: Added Italian and Korean translations
  • NEW: Translate Tweets option
  • NEW: Block user
  • NEW: Report as Spam
  • Fixed issue with loading and uploading larger images

Admittedly, it's been awhile since we played with moTweets but we have to confess, it has become quite good as of late.  We especially like the Raven Black color scheme now (see above), though the scrolling is a bit too kinetic at times.

Still, if you are a fan you should upgrade either by downloading the update .cab over your existing version or via Marketplace (when it shows up).

Looks like the popular freeware Twitter client PockeTwit has received a nice update to v0.75. PockeTwit, for those who have not tried, is a freeware Twitter client that has fullscreen and kinetic scrolling support. The developers have posted the new fixes and additions on their blog:

  • "QuickPost" fix
  • Refined the Today Plugin
  • Added "Saved Searches" feature
  • Added support for "140it.com" (shrnks ur msg 2 <140 chrtrs!)
  • Added Img.Ly, Posterous, and TweetPhoto support
  • New desktop installer available
  • Cached updated Avatar fix

Though many of us here at WMExperts like Twikini for our Twitter needs, no denying the coolness that PockeTwit and their team bring to the field. Read more details about the update here and get your download on here.

Twitter client Twikini turns the official 1.0, loses its free beta status

Twikini

When Trinket Software released the first beta of its Twikini Twitter client (Twitter + bikini ... say it slowly) in mid-April, we became instant fans. It was lightweight and speedy. And while there were a few beta bugs, worked progressed, issues were resolved and features were added. Twikini has now reached an official Version 1.0 and has shed its beta – and free – status.

There are a couple of pricing options, which is a little uncommon. For $4.95 you get Twikini plus any of Trinket's other applications (see the full list here). Hardly a bad deal. Businesses (that'd be us) are asked to pony up $9.95. There's a third option, but it's not one we condone. Trinket's giving away Twikini to bloggers. (For the record: I purchased a business license.) You're on the honor system here, folks. Do the right thing.

Oh, and we mentioned features. It's worth reading through the version histories, but here are but a few of our favorites:

  • Multiple account access. A must for us.
  • URL-shorteners. TinyURL, bit.ly, etc.
  • In-line Twitpic. View the pic directly in the tweet. Very cool.
  • View a tweet's location on Google maps.
  • Tweet song info. WMP only, unfortunately.

Twikini runs on all versions of Windows Mobile (5 through 6.5, Standard or Pro). You can try the 1.0 release of Twikini for free for 14 days. (Trinket says the previous beta versions will at some point cease to work.) Get the full deets on their site here.

You can follow Twikini on Twitter at @twikini. And as always, we're at @wmexperts.

Update: Version 1.1 is now out, and it fixes a few bugs (one of them a pretty serious one). Go get it here.

YouTube Client gets updated to v2.0.9

Lordy knows what exactly has been updated with YouTube's dedicated video client, but it jumped from v2.0.2 to v2.0.9 sometime...recently.

One obvious and welcome change is program compatibility – finally – with 320x320 devices (before it would rotate and crash on Treos), so that's pretty cool. We also imagine they've improved their streaming codecs and optimized the app a little.

So if you had some problems back when it debuted, you may want to take another chance: http://m.youtube.com
